Hey guys,

Just bought myself a r33 gtst about a month ago as a base to start building up on.

The car is by far stock right now the previous owner new what he was doing but never really put any serious engine mods on.

So Yea my first issue i had was, trying to put a BOV ( atmos) instead of the stock one it comes with, I'm just driving along and i put clutched in and the car died so i started crapping myself and put the stock one back, did a bit of research and discovered that its because the engines running to rich or something, so i get why it was choking but nowhere/noone mentioned how to solve this problem. So my first question would be, to run a aftermarket atmospheric BOV what do u need to have done air/fuel wise i guess to prevent it stalling/ is it possible for me to have one on with my current specs. Im running a stock ecu and an afm

Secondly i was looking at getting an ECU I'm just pretty confused with what to get and like most of my mates bought their cars with ecus / didn't have to pay for their cars thanks to their mom n dad but id like to know and understand what I'm putting in my car, as well as not pay 1.7g for an apex just cause everyone has it. I see that apex comes with a hand controller option where u can tweak the settings yourself, but honestly that sort of thing is not for me, plus I've gathered that the power fc isn't a piggyback its a full takeover stock ecu isn't it. I was wondering if i got something like the Greddy emanate ecu, would that do the job? Cause basically all I'm after getting the parts i want, getting someone who knows more then me to dyne tune it and fix the settings, and if i wanted to change it id go back to my tuner. Hence would piggyback ecu's like Greddy do the job for me?

Ill bundle the last few things i was going to get together, Firstly I'm really keen on a high mount stainless manifold to replace the stock one as well as getting rid of the stock turbo and either putting on a KLS T70 or pcp 430.. possibly a garret 35/40 if i manage to get a decent price. Im not looking of running any crazy boosts or ever achieving more then 400hp out of my car so i won't need a crazy turbo, hence I'm guessing any one of those turbos would work. With replacing the manifolds and turbos, did the whole engine have to be taken out, cause I've been reading bolt on everywhere but when i pop the hood on the car, it seems a little more then screwing and unscrewing a couple of bolts.

Lastly, I was thinking of getting 550cc nismo injectors and upgrading my fuel pump as a few mates told me those cause significant power increased. Well thats all the things id like to start off with for now really and i would just like some help figuring out the best way to go about doing it/ any other helpful suggestions that i should do instead or as well!

Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Immy

Forget the atmospheric bov for now (until you get a Link)

Don't just ask people to tell you what to do - spend some time reading this forum - especially the RB25 turbo upgrade thread and then ask questions if you get stuck.

ECU options include Nistune - (better than an E-Manage assuming you have a manual) but do some reading on how to acheive this on an R33 - or Link (and myriad others)

A Garret 35/40 would be a crazy turbo for 300kw (400hp)...again read the rb25det turbo upgrade thread.

Most stainless highmounts are cheap and nasty and break. Read below for budget alternatives to a 6boost but your stock manifold will be fine up to 300kw.

Find a workdhop and tuner u trust. Ask what that tuner does best and suggests and go with it. Not to sound like I am palming u off but its the advice I got to. End of the day its no good buying an ecu coz someone suggested it, then u take it to ur tuner and he doesnt work with that particular model/brand. There are plenty of ecu's that will do the trick. I am happy with my PFC for what I have and do with the car. Someone else with more extensive mods might want features the PFC doesnt have thus suggests that ecu.

Cheers, for the reply

I pretty Much know what i want to do for starters,

-An ECU or something rather just so that i can tune it to run at 12 or 14 psi when i choose to.

-A set of TLF 800cc injectors direct fit. ( found these for a decent price so i got them instead of going the 550cc option)

-I like the look of the high mount turbos so I've managed to find a Garrett Gt35/40 Turbo with a custom stainless manifold external tiel waste gate , exhaust fitting etc, its pretty much a bolt on job, there was the option of a Kls T70 power spirit or PCP 430 but they were all around the same prices i got the trusty garrett.

- Ill also be getting a fuel pump as well to keep up with new injectors etc

With regards to the atmospheric BOV, could you please explain this LINK you are talking about please.

I had a read through the turbo upgrade thread and it had like lists of what people did and how they achieved their results, it was pretty useful, the only thing that still left me in the grey was like, what the individual mods did, cause at the moment I'm just really in the dark with this ECU and Fuel controllers and what not right now. Would just like to know what i could or should get Electronic wise to manage my car. Tried calling up a few dyno tuners around perth and you'd be surprised how unfriendly some are. oh well, just wanted to ask the forum for ideas so i can get the right parts get it fitted and then get it tuned at the end.

Cheers

Already told you 35/40 was too big.

A Link is an ecu that runs a MAP sensor instead of an AFM so not bothered by atmospheric BOVs.

Do some more reading before you spend more money on unsuitable gear.

    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
    • My return flow is custom and puts the return behind the reo, instead of at the bottom. All my core is in the air flow, rather than losing some of it up behind the reo. I realise that the core really acts more as a spiky heatsink than as a constant rate heat exchanger, and that therefore size is important.... but mine fits everything I needed and wanted without having to cut anything, and that's worth something too. And there won't be a hot patch of core up behind the reo after every hit, releasing heat back into the intake air.
    • There is a really fun solution to this problem, buy a Haltech (or ECU of your choice) and put the MAF in the bin.  I'm assuming your going to want more power in future, so you'll need to get the ECU at some stage. I'd put the new MAF money towards the new ECU.
