hey guys, problem has arisen and car is dead and stranded away from home - but im home now FML.

car: R34 GTT 1999

Problem:

Drove to [location]. Got out. 15 mins later come back to the car and realise that my parkers are still on (and hence tail lights). I press 'unlock' on my remote, and i see the parkers turn off. Strange, i thought - cos the light indicator switch inside was still 'on'. So I look inside and put my key in and turn it to ACC, NOTHING. I then turn off the light indicator, and try to start the car. Silence, not a crank at all.

I close the car door, try to lock the car. Nothing.

Get a mate to come and jump start - nothing.

All i hear when I turn the light indicator switch is a very faint 'tick' which I think the alarm/relays(i made that up) make, when something is activated.

Checked the fuse box, seems like the 2 MAIN fuses have some corrosion on them but definitely not burnt out (from the top anyway).

it is a brand new battery, less than a month old. Possibly alternator related though....?

Don't think it is immobiliser because the LED doesn't even flash, and the car won't lock/unlock itself.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me a hand? IE, recommend an auto electricion (mobile, obviously) or mechanic who will work on a sunday?

Anything is much appreciated...just want to get him alive, or at least back home. Will be going back tomorrow to try and pop in another battery.

Can be contacted on 04 22 839 88eight.

Cheers, Chris.

when you turn the key to ACC do you get all the lights come up on the dash like it's supposed to?

When you turn the key does the motor crank at all?

When your mate tried to jumpstart did you disarm the alarm & therefore the immobiliser while the cables were connected before trying to start your car?

alright will have a look at that. thing is as i mentioned, the lights went off when i pressed unlock - and this makes me think it's somehow shorted a circuit/fuse/ etc and killed the car, since after that nothing works...

on the way now to try and pop in another battery.

Unless your alarm has chucked it, the parkers should be fed from the light switch and only get a positive "blink" signal from the alarm. So essentially they are separate circuits.

If your blinkers went off when you hit the alarm then sounds like the nominal voltage of the alarm was just enough to kill the last remaining juice in your battery. When you jump start, do the lights work? If not then you have a main line issue somewhere.

The immobilizer should only affect the running circuit - e.g. ignition or fuel kill. Other items such as lights and radio should still work regardless.

Be absolutely sure that when you jump start it you connect positive to positive and negative to negative. Reverse polarizing will damage the car's electronics.

Hey guys thanks for all your help I got the car home. Apparently it was a loose wire/loom connection to the battery, all I did was shake the loom connecting to the positive battery terminal and I heard it click, a sound I know which means the battery is now connected. I drove it home even though there was a possible loose wire but I will bring it to an auto elec .

Once again many thanks, this is now resolved.

Thanks to all those who chipped in and helped and especially those who gave me a call with advice.

I still fail to see how unlocking the car with the Parkers on will cause this problem but I will update when I've gotten it fixed so people have a reference for the future.

Cheers, Chris.

    • The final part arrived today to un-clampify and simplify the intake Who would have though a 1/2" hose stainless bulkhead fitting designed for below waterline bilge pumps would be what I needed Test fit on a 3" offcut I had laying around to see if it would work, and it worked a treat All going well the intake will be on its "final version" tomorrow

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
