Here are my tips:

1) use 2 jacks. that lets you change the angle of the gearbox as required

2) make sure the rear of the motor is as low as possible. ie the rear of the head should be resting on the firewall

3) it will not go on the right way around. you will always need to twist it so that the starter motor housing clears the body. Once it has cleared you twist it back around to straight

4) the gearbox angle and motor angle must match perfectly. this is the biggest tip!

5) if they are lined up properly and not popping in, you may need to rotate the gears a little. this is because the splines on the input shaft have to match the splines on the clutch. this bit is luck! If you need to turn the gears a little put it in a short gear and turn the tailshaft or rear wheels (assuming they are off the ground!)

6) the gearbox angle and motor angle must match. I know I already said that but it's important! as you get closer it gets much easier to judge by how the flywheel compares to the front of the bellhousing. If the gap is bigger at the top vs bottom or right vs left it is not straight enough.

7) because of the spline alignment luck (#5) it generally goes in with a little clunk. When you hear that you have won!

8) once the box is within 2-5cm you can help it in using a big g clamp or 2 between the block and bellhousing. Once you are that close the input shaft is lined up OK and it is just the final adjustments. Never never force the box when the gap is large because you can bend the gearbox input shaft, which f**ks it.

is there a trick to getting the gear box on? or do we just need to keep trying to twist and push = feels close but just wont go in anyfurther

Most likely the clutch isn't aligned. I have a clutch aligning tool.

Also my tip for reinstalling the gearbox is leaning the engine back. You can loosing piping, exhaust and lean it back with a strap from a solid mounting point.

fly wheel was bolted up clutch plate was put on while the aligning tool was on and holding it then then cover plated was bolted on - then the tool was removed - i also put it in and out to make sure was ok and was fine..

yeah that was a proble we where having it was fouling on something - strugling to rotate the gear box and manover it in -

but duncan has given a few tips we will be trying tonight

Try grinding off some of the rib over the starter motor, you will notice this bit is in the way just before it goes in, or you can bash the trans tunnel with a mallet.

I thought my clutch was mis aligned, but no, it was the thrust bearing had slipped and was catching on the shaft.

    • I dunno about that as a blanket statement. Pitwork is Nissan's "Nissan genuine" thing, and for stuff like timing belts, I have found them to be excellent. Of course, for things like oil filters, you always use proper trusted brands anyway, not whatever the OEM has taken to using.
    • Ahhhh... If you were putting 12V to the led in there, that's likely made it very unhappy. Chances are how you put power, was 12V across an LED that's meant to only have about 20mA through it at peak, and a forward voltage of about 1.8 to 2.4 volts. That circuit is likely only a 3V3 circuit, and will have a resistor in series with the led too. That's my guesstimate on that light, without having touched one.
    • Another vote for installing them and see how you go.  I mean, you already own them, why would you not fit them? 
    • I have had too many of those over the years, my cars have a toolkit or at minimum a cheapy multi tool thing because its too easy to be snookered by some stupid plastic clip that stops you checking the battery terminal isn't loose.
    • Basically, if there is a part# on the nissan catalogue, it is a genuine part. There is a thing called "new old stock" which is stuff made years ago but never sold (or landfilled), but it is super hit and miss what you can buy. Other than some expensive Nismo stuff there is nothing new being made that suits these cars. The only time to be a little careful is (mostly in the US I think, but maybe Japan too), Nissan started rebranding some cheap crap maintenance parts like oil filters as "Pitworks"; stay away from them, if you are buying cheap just buy whatever the local car parts shop carries The three part numbers have an explanation on Amayama: 0V005 is auto, base style 0V015 is manual 0V505 is auto, hectic momo branded ones, maximum F&F points there!
