Hi All,

I am new to this forum and would greatly appreciate any help.

The Story...

About 3 weeks ago I bought an R34 GTT 2 door... finally... car seemed in good nick, I have done bout 1500km's since and is my daily driver.

Mods:

POD filter

cat back exhaust.

(As purchased)

Now the issue I started having was the engine light, TCS, and slip lights intermittently coming on, they would come on and go away on restart. Sometimes I wouldn't see them for days. After a search around the forums I put it down to coil packs as the car would have a very slight miss occasionally when the lights where on but apart from that it ran fine minus a little power. Now to the issue at hand, a couple of days go I went to the shops and spent about half an hour there, once I came back to the car it didn't want to start. It would crank about 3 times as usual but it was like it just barely wouldn't start if that makes sense. It would almost fire but just not enough. I let it sit for about 20 mins after cranking it a few times and hey presto... started like normal(the engine,TCS and slip lights stayed on for the drive but car seemed to drive normally). Got home and turned it off and started it again within a minute or two and no problems 3 cranks and off she went no engine light nothing. let it sit fir an hour or so and again no problem starting and no lights on the dash, so I went for a drive for about 45 mins or so and stopped to get some food, again car started no problem. This morning on a cold start as per normal no issues, drove half way to work and stopped to get a coffee(normal routine) came out and again car won't fire. So I let it sit for about 20 minutes and it started like normal...hmmmm... drove to work(engine,TCS and slip lights on) car drove fine. Went into work and opened up, came back out and started the car (no more than 2 minutes since the car was turned off) no problems. so at lunch I started the car again and let it idle for about ten minutes again no issues. Turned the car off and about 2 minutes after tried to start it and it didn't want to start again.... car now stuck at work :(

I'm a noob to R34's so any help would be appreciated. The car is in Kensington VIC if anyone can help it would be great because I don't have a car at the moment and unfortunately I do need a car.

Thanks in advance to anyone that helps.

It sounds like either coilpacks or spark plugs.

First, replace all the spark plugs and see how you go with that. You can get a good set for about $70 off eBay, they go for about 100k or you can get the cheap ones at about a few dollars each. The cheap ones give good sparks but you would need to replace them every time you service the car. This is the cheap option.

Secondly, if problem doesn't go away, check the coil packs. While the car is running, disconnect the coil pack one at the time and listen to the engine sound. If you unplug 1st one and the engine is struggling even more then you know that that coil pack is ok. If you disconnect it and the engine remain running at the same struggling pace, then you know that this coil pack is gone.

It might be hard to explain to you here by typing. If you like, inbox me your number and I'll give you a call.

Other than this, it could be from the fuel pump.

One of my coil packs died before and I manage to get a genuine one for about $60.

Thanks for the info, the car decided to start and run for a bit today then died and started again for a bit and died again. When it runs it runs perfectly as in I can put a cup of coffee on the motor and wouldnt spill a drop (smooth). Luckely I managed through a friend of a friend to have it scanned today while it was running and it came up with low voltage, ignition and cas faults. I have a new battery for it comming tomorrow as the current battery doesnt want to charge. Will see if that changes anything.

In the mean time if anyone would have a cas sensor to suit the rb25det neo that I could borrow to see if that fixes the issue before buying one I would realy appreciate it as my funds are low at the moment and I need to get the car going asap.

I don't think this problem is caused by the battery. While the engine is running, the alternator should produce enough energy or electricity to run every single system. This is pretty logic, if the alternator can't produce enough electricity, even if you replace 10 more battery, they will die eventually.

Unless the main problem is your alternator.

Once fixed, don't forget to share the solution(s).

I agree with you but im a little desperate. Personally I think its the cas. I just need to get her going asap as public transport is not an option in my surcumstance due to my 2yr old needing to be dropped off at daycare before work and I only have a loan car for a short period. Shigh

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
