Hi all,

I have an Autoselect Carbon bonnet for my R34 GT-R and have fitted it to my car but my problem is with the locking latch at the front... basically it just wont lock down/in the latch assembly no matter how hard I push down.

I have played around with the latch assembly by removing the 3 x 12mm bolts that keep it into place and trying to move it up and down. I have also even tried to remove the springs and see if that would help at all but nothing. I've also tried adjusting where the bonnet bolts onto its hinges (near windscreen) and still nothing.

Definitly not a case of not pushing down hard enough as I hard a 'crack' sound when I really gave it some so I didnt press down any further :(

Here are some pics of the bonnet resting on the latch.

Any info/help/tips would be greatly appreciated :)
Cheers,
Glen

I had a similar problem with a carbon bonnet without pins, unbolted the latch assembly and filed out the bolt holes so it could be bolted higher up gave it the extra height for the U clip to click into place

So you mean its just a simple matter of the U-clip not being able to go low enough? Hence why you have to had to mount the latch assembly higher?

If thats the case, how much higher did you have to mount it? Ie - like 5mm etc?

Cheers

The pins also hold the bonnet down so the front latch should be able to click in without any problems

Thanks for your input Longz, so you reckon if I get bonnet pins they can actually hold the bonnet down enough to help push the U-clip low enough to click into place?

Hey Glen,

How goes things mate ?

No, he is saying use the pins to hold down the bonnet, which is illegal in NSW :( even tho it works better on a CF bonnet, you can have them providing they are flush mount and not the only method of holding the bonnet down

Can the U get spaced down at all like with washers or some thing, how is it attached to the bonnet

Michael

These were the ones i used when running a z tune style'd bonnet

I might have a spare set in CF some where in the garage brand new lol

But yes sometimes when i don't click the bonnet down enough i just use the 2 pins to hold it in place ( but like XKLABA was saying not legal )

Hey Michael :)

Yeah things are going good.

No you cant do anything with the actual U-clip but as Zac mentioned you can play around with the latch assembly and move it higher.

So Longz..... Michael (XKLABA) mentioned that you can have the bonnet pins providing they are flush with the bonnet like the ones you have, so yours arent legal?

Also, might be interested in your CF ones if their for sale?

I do recall that the flush pins are much more "legal friendly" as i have been pulled over by hwp a few times and they didn't care about the bonnet with aero pins ,

Let me get back to you it's been a while i need to look for it somewhere in the garage

P.S did you get a bodykit \ panel shop to install the bonnet for you ?

Hmm interesting.

Okay thanks for that mate :)

I put the bonnet on myself. I had to put the standard bonnet back on because I had to drive it and that clicked in just fine. The U-clip on both bonnets dont look that different.... thats why im like :verymad: wtf? haha

The law requires the bonnet have a two stage locking mechanism so while you can use bonnet pins they can not be your only method of securing the bonnet down

The ones Longs has are the flush mount ones, its the ones that has the pin exposed you can't have I case you hit a pedestrian they won't get cut up on the pins, frankly if you hit a pedestrian the pins would be less of a concern then the near two tonne of car telling them their somewhere they shouldn't be :(

Looks like the only way you will get that to work is reposition the latch higher

Getting out to the track much ATM ?

I had similar problems on my fg bonnet when i first installed it, turned out some of the underside of the bonnet itself near the latch was hitting and preventing clear access of the latch to the u bit, filed it back a little and it works fine.

Can you see any place that seems to be hitting something near the u metal??

Yeah Michael that looks like the only thing I can do, as well as the bonnet pins. :(

Ummm I havent been to the track in aaages but I definitly will once I get all these things sorted out. :)

Thanks for your input 75coupe, well I removed the airbox cold air feed and that didnt help. Doesnt seem to be rubbing on anything else...

in your case, what was ur fg bonnet rubbing on?

I never got mine to fit, after measuring the stock and aftermarket U clip the size difference was just to big, Flush fit bonnet pins and metal safety catch on the U clip so if the pins fail the bonnet won't fly up and smash the windshield/roof

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
