Opinions on defects

Guest SPOOLIN

Well im after ppls opinions on what they think is the most likely reason to be pulled over and given the nasty yellow sticker.

I have been paying close attention lately to the skylines and silvias of adelaide and there seems to be more and more of them getting defected. I am wondering what is causing this eg. Loud exhausts, Too low or Way too much rice ( Im not a rice h8er but its not for me :D).

I guess there might be a few ppl getting caught mid-drift;) and also the manditory wan*ers who thrash through every street in town:stupid: .

G'day Lee,

I'd be careful if you've got the following stuf:

BOV that vents into the air.

POD filter

Loud exhaust

Lack of Donuts for the Policemen

Too low

Dark tint.

Plus all the usual stuff like bald tyres and so on.

Not sure about the SA Police, but the Police around the ACT are pretty good, if you don't drive like a D%$^&ead you'll be right.

Too low, too loud, dark tint, stupid driving in built up areas & all the other stuff that draws attention.

At the end of the day if the police want to they can come up with something totally ridiculous to defect a dead standard car! It might be total BS but it'll still be a pain to clear.

I've seen a legit' written defect notice in NSW for "no shift pattern displayed on the gear shift"!!! The driver was most likely busted doing the wrong thing & the cop went to town on him.

I'm with BRUTE, it's just a case of keeping a low profile until the blitz eases up, either that or by a POS clunker & drive it into the ground, 'cause the cops don't seem to hassle those cars :P

EDIT: Meanwhile we've got local small time car yards being busted into, cars on the lot being smashed & guard dogs injured! Hmmm? Which one raises more revenue, clamping down on local crime or hassling modified car owners?

Recently some interesting road statistics were published in the paper, speed camera revenue.

In 1992 (think it was 92? may have been earlier?) the state had 5 cameras operating, road toll was recorded at 164 deaths & 5mil' in fines revenue.

2001 - 50+ cameras operating, 51mil' in fine revenue (a state record!) road toll 165 deaths.

Yep speed cameras are really doing a great job in their intended role, saving lives? Hell no making money for the state govenment!

I just got off defect last Friday. Initially got defected for excessive noise + bald tyres. Put it through regency and they found more things to defect me for which includes:

  • unsecure speaker in door
  • turbo timer concealed and connected to handbrake
  • airpod unsecured (but no problem having an airpod)
  • rear muffler burnt out
  • front upper control arm bush movement
  • sticker in the wiper sweep of windscreen
  • all brake + tail lights do not operate (bullcrap since compliancing an R32 requires two of the four stove lights to be out)

Anyway it's finally off defect just be careful guys, they can get you for anything!

Yep got through with all those things fixed on the list.

They'll only defect your pod if it is mounted in a dangerous position (e.g. no bracket and unsecure) and if it contributing to the noise of your vehicle. Mine did make quite a ruckus at high revs with the R32 but not nearly as much as on my EXA. But after I fixed a bracket to the airpod to stop it floating around it was fine. I put that through regency with no probs.

I got a question. I am gonna buy a R33 skyline and modify it. EG more engine mods etc. so what do i gota watch out for in the way of defectable items and whats the go with blow off valves why r they illegal as they only vent air and not fuel? Is it to do with noises or something. Dont wanna spend shit loads on engine exhaust mods if they gonna harras me just cause its hotted up.:shake:

Its the ATMO bovs that are the problem as they will cause the car to overfuel and yes i guess some sort of noise pollution.

The std BOV is quite loud still with a pod filter.

:D

Pretty much if u go for an eftermarket ecu make sure it has the ability to run in closed loop etc.. If not it wont pass emmisions.

Pretty much i think it is anything that has more than 30% more pwoer they can defect u but seriously how will they tell..?!?!

Its not like they will pull your motor out and slap it on an engine dyno.... :)

Just make the car look respectable and not ricey and you generally wont have a problem unless u get caught doing somthing stupid like i almost did last friday night.

But i wasn't lowered, loud but i did have dark tint where as the other car was low big wheels loud exhaust. He didn't get defected only done for excessive noise. (wheelspin)

yeah Brad that is correct ....

However I don't understand the reasoning - turbo timers that are connected to the hanbdbrake are illegal YET the whole purpose of the handbrake connection is to stop the engine if the handbrake is disengaged.

ie. if I turn my car off with the handbrake disengaged - the car will stop - no matter how hot the engine is.

This is mostly to foil would-be crooks who would try to steal your car just after you walk away while the engine is still running. If you take off the handbrake the motor stops instantly. Hence if you have an accident and don't put the handbrake on, the car stops immediately anyway - hence no danger.

/me confused

Exactly. I thought it was to stop would-be crooks too.

However, they've probably defected due to the modification required to attach a switch to the handbrake (i.e. electrical wiring.. woop friggen doop). Secondly I'm not sure what they mean by concealed? It was just under the dash in birds view.

But I guess if it's not standard it has to go. Some things just aren't suppose to make sense.

    • Nope.    Grab a varex and turn it down as you get close to home, win win?
    • So, I've had my V36 for about a month now and have already copped an "excessive exhaust noise" notification from QLD TMR, reported by someone in my local area. It's a twin as per the original, and can have a bit of a throaty note to it when idling cold 😄 and if I do get up it a bit, it can be noisy, but it did pass a roadworthy inspection before sale, so.... ... but in the interest of being a good neighbour, I do want to quieten it down a bit. Is anyone here running a quiet aftermarket cat-back on their V36 or 370Z? And the big, bold question: does an aftermarket cat-back really make much of a performance difference on these cars?
    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
