I know I plug Shaun and Boost Worx a bit on here, but it's for good reason, read on...

On Saturday night I was heading out for dinner in the trusty Sigma, I had just turned onto Port Rd when all of a sudden the clutch decided it didn't want to play the game any more :) The pedal almost went to the floor and I couldn't get it into gear at all. I knew the Sigma's clutch was a tad worn, but I wasn't expecting it to die completely - and so suddenly!. I rang a mate who was only 5mins away (working on his GTi-R) he and another mate drove out with some tools to see what they could do, I wasn't dressed for getting my hands dirty :). After a few minutes of trying to suss the situation it was decided it was time for a new clutch and I'd be best leaving the trusty Sigma and returning the following day to tow it :(

This is where Shaun/Boost Worx come in... That night I rang Shaun and explained the symptoms, the next day he drove down and picked up the car on his car trailer, took it back to the workshop, found the fault (a bolt had come loose holding the clutch cable bracket and the bolt had jammed preventing the cable from freely moving) and had it fixed in ~10mins. He's got the clutch feeling better than it ever has :) Shaun's wife even drove the Sigma back home for me. For all of Shaun's assistance he charged me a grand total of $0 :)

Shaun - you are a bloody legend :D

I wont tell you how much he charged me for less than 10 minutes work - it was alot more than $0.

Matt, I know that Shaun looks after you, but I think it is a little remiss to post up 'mates rates'.

I dont want to bad mouth Shaun, he does good work, but I can guarantee that very few others here on the forums would get the treatment you do. I certainly dont, and it is a bit dissapointing (or was) that when I went down there, I got charge $50 for a few minutes to add a bit of fuel and adjust a TPS - less than a 5 minute job.

I read of your great deals, but then it seems worse when I go in and it cost me alot more than I would have expected for a very quick fix.

I guess Matt and I just have a couple of pretty faces then, eh Steve :) Oh well, sorry to hear you feel that way Steve.

He had 4 cars in the workshop before i dropped mine in, and i had to wait a week or so before i could even get it in there...might have had a small part to do with it. Not making any excuses for him, but he is a busy man atm :D

Your not bad are you Steve, I make a post about a bit of decent service (that is all too rare in this day and age - in ANY field!) and you have nothing but negatives to say. *Sigh*… I guess it's fair enough, as everyone is entitled to his or her say.

You say that, "very few others here on the forums would get the treatment…", I can think of at least 5 people off the top of my head that have had the same level as I have.

What you have to remember Steve is that a level of customer - workshop loyalty has to be forged. If you go from one workshop to another and then to a Japanese tuner and then back to another workshop and so on, then I guess you will never form a decent connection with any one workshop/tuner. I don’t think you’d see many workshops charging much less for the same 5min job, it was actually closer to 15mins :) Ok so maybe he should’ve charged you $30 or $40, but what about when Shaun did 4+hrs worth of tuning for you and charged you ~$300, I’d say that wasn’t too bad a price wouldn’t you?

For what it’s worth I usually pay $30 for a few tweaks and sometimes I don’t get charged at all – but I have always returned MY business to him! I return my business to him because his is good at what he does, is honest, and as far as I and others are concerned, charges reasonable prices.

I dare say you would get better treatment from James and D1 than I as you have connections with them, so feel free to tell all about your positive experience with them.

Finally, you must have seen something positive about Shaun and Boost Worx otherwise you wouldn’t have asked Shaun if he had any work for you.

Its true that u have formed a frienship with Shaun due to ur repeated buisiness with him and the loyalty that comes with that. Its the same with a mechanic i know down the road from me, he would do stuff like that for me all the time. It comes from knowing the person and building trust.

I agree that you have to work on the relationship first off, at the start they will treat you just like any normal customer... They have to as they are a business, and they can't just offer mates rates to everyone.

That said there are certainly some dodgy people out there that will try to rip you off any chance they get regardless of how good your relationship is with the workshop... been there done that with my last workshop.

I currently have good connections with another workshop that hasn't enjoyed a good rep on this forum, but all my work is done by 1 person out of "business hours". I would also not go to this workshop unless this 1 person worked on my car. This came around as I know someone etc, and is the only reason I am getting "mates rates".

On Boostworx

I have not had anything to do with Boostworx, but have heard great things, that said I would not go into the workshop prepared to get a deal that Matt got, and I would just be like any normal customer.

Also his yellow car was a damn good choice IMO :)

On D1:

D1 Garage are awesome (tks Steve for recommending ;)), Rob there has given me loads of info and is always willing to answer any questions I have ... helps when we have sister cars :). They will definately be getting continued business from me.

I agree that the benefits matt gets and some others is not what ur normal customer would get, and hence i agree with steve that it could be misleading to post this in that someone might read this, not get the same service as matt, and think they are gettin ripped off, or that they are not good.

I know boost worx and shaun are excellent, and i will trust him with my car now. However i dont expect miracles or cheapest tune ever, i just want a fair rate, and i want an excellent tune.

Personally i wouldnt post stuff up knowing others wouldnt get the same service as me.

Whilst we are talkin workshops, i must say D1 Garage are great, ive come in lots of times, only a few times to purchase, but rob is always heaps helpful, all the time. I never speak to James, hehe hes always in Japan :P

    • Yeah, plenty of air flow, there is a dedicated path that feeds the air in to the OEM intake tube behind the bumper As for a "tangible effect", maybe, but getting the pod/intake air out of the hot engine bay is worth it psychologically to me, even if it gives no performance difference, so the tangible effect in my Lizard brain saysss yessss  In the end, to me a tangible effect isn't always about performance, sometimes it a sound or a look, or even a...... feeling  Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga
    • yeah first and reverse is where you will find clutch release issues (whether hydraulic or mechanical) because the difference in revs required is the highest there; particularly changing down from 2nd to 1st when still moving. To be clearer though, it is possible that the clutch release bearing is the wrong height. This is less likely than a hydraulic issue but it is not unheard of when you are mixing and matching

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
    • From memory, on the R33 GTSt at least, while everyone says "It's not adjustable", I found when I changed clutches in mine, it just needed a small adjustment on the rod length. But be very wary here, as you could end up trying to push the pushrod in the master too far, or blowing out the slave.   Most likely though, if the master/slave isn't bypassing internally or leaking out, then the throw out is the wrong height compared to the fingers on the clutch, so when it moves to disengage the clutch, it isn't 100% disengaged. You can check part of this out too by jacking the car up, having the engine running, put your foot on the clutch and try to engage 1st gear. If it goes in pretty easy (Compared to the ground) and/or the wheels start turning a fair bit and it takes a bit too much brake pedal to bring them back to a stop, this is likely the issue.  I'm not sure if you can adjust the height of the forks etc in these though, it's been that long since I've touched any RB gearbox.
