Am i missing something? None of the above makes any sense to me

Bax: Obviously it isnt a 1/4 mile on the freeway ;p

I guess u needed to be there to understand.. When the monaro dropped back a gear sitting at high rpm with loud engine roaring then we both floor it, its fairly easy to see who is faster or closer. I couldnt hear anything over his engine, sounded nice, not as good as the Z06 corvette engine noise though.

Anyways, WRX

Stock rex and stock gtst should be pretty much even, maybe the 33 pulls a little bit more. Thing ive noticed when WRX do big launches is they bog down like crazy and that usually takes the 4wd advantage away.

I havent owned a rex but from what ive gathered from friends and people i know that have them.. the 33gtst seems to respond to mods alot better.

It doesnt take much to turn a stock 33 into a consistant low-mid 13 sec car if you got good camber and tyres.

In terms of performance for your dollar, the 33 definately wins

Personally i dont like how ALL Rex's (including the sports wagons and liberty rs etc) sound the same. Its a nice sound, but u get sick of it after awhile.

hehe now now

Ide rather wheel spin than bog, atleast u can feather the clutch to turn wheelspin into traction. When racing, any pause in acceleration is bad.

On topic, is australia getting the 2.5L wrx? Cos it'l be a different story then

knorn

krawler

Reality please.

So most of you think, guess, umm de dar, that a rex beats you off the line....but low and behold you think you've got the top end to catch and pass...would this be within the first 200m, 300m, at the end of the 400m, the first k. or at the next TOWN???????

knorn...so after the mod's are you thinking you've got the quarter done in low to mid 13's? (Terminal speed my guess 100 to 110mph.....160 to 175kph.)

Fact clutch/flywheel first and with minor mod's to a rex...I'd be disappointed if it wasn't into the 12's.

Sum it up and look at it again.....a rex beats you off the line...beats you to the end of the quarter and your terminal speed is already 160 to 175kph....at what speed are you going to past the REX......................my STI has the 180kph speed limiter connected.....so if I'm the REX your racing, your only going to pass me, because the race is over and I'm backing off.

Again, in a race....if any driver/car has better reation time/traction and gets off the line first...it will take a car with a much better ET, as well as terminal speed to catch and pass it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REALITY....rwd cars require slicks or a much greater terminal speed to make up for the metres loss on the start........next time your at the Drags, take note of the WRX's terminal speed. If you can't beat that terminal speed by at least 15MPH, your not going to beat it to the end of the quarter. THE ADVANTAGE OF TRACTION IS ONLY UNDER-ESTIMATED BY THOSE WHO DO NOT LEARN.

Regardless of the education.....the WOOP ASS, think I did stories, will always be told by the loser!!!

Interesting thread (apart from 15 year olds with the 'my mate's bro's cousin's car' stories...

My R33 is mildly modded - 12psi, exhaust, 34 GTT intercooler, better clutch, filter - and the several rex's I've played against on the street, I've beaten. For some reason (driver, probably) I've gotten the jump off the line on the rex(s) then turbo winds up fully and I'll pull away. The majority of them seemed to be stockers (at least from the exhaust), and one had an exhaust and I don't know what else.

Frankly, I'd love to own a rex. A co-worker has an MY99 and I utterly love the feel and handling. I've spent a bit of time recently trying to mimic its suspension, and I think it's pretty close now. Tight, but not punishing, communicates bumps and the feel of the road without rattling teeth out. However, my money only covers the R33, so...

Anyway, that co-worker and I have had a good drag on a very long stretch of highway (and several other wrx's and I have played there. :P ) so it's fairly close in enviroment to a strip: nice and straight and flat, goes for about two kms, set of lights that changes automatically, don't have to wait for cars to set it off, no places for cops to hide (unless they can levitate. :D ). The coworker I got the jump on, but thanks to a badly destroyed clutch on my behalf, he caught up to me and passed at about 90. I'd love to have another go against him now, and so would he, but we never seem to meet up there... and the damn sod won't let me have a drive of it anyway. :O

GTR-STI, can I borrow yours? ;)

I'm quite sure if I came up against a mid-heavy modded wrx, it'd be a different and interesting story. I'm quite sure I wouldn't get the jump as easily and I couldn't even guess who'd pull ahead. Won't stop me from having a go though. :)

Anyone got a stock R33 and a stock WRX? ;)

Bleh

You are in brisbane?

If you are interested, I wouldnt mind meeting up at willowbank some time. There is a boostcruising organised race day out there very soon?

Not for any sort of wang enlargement gratification, but because I'd be interested to see how the drag goes against a "good" driver in the rex, and "a" driver in the skyline (the missus)

The fact is we can bitch and argue about these cars beating each other, but at the end of the day it comes down to the better driver.

Because the difference in experience and skill (and often a car thats not tuned properly) can make a difference of many seconds from 0-400.

Given ideal circumstances the r32, r34 gtst's in stock form should eat a rex in stock form no dramas, to 120km/hr and beyond.

STI? r32, r34 gtrs, same deal.

As for the r33, well..

Lets say "at least remove the stock exhaust first? :)"

ideal is not a good answer, i don't want to launch my car in mild rev and "hope" i launch good to beat a rex at the light.

okay, i lunch alright (idea), and as long as they don't launch bad, they will still kill us due to 4wd advantage, and i have to race up to 100 or so at the STREET to hunt them down.

race them in rolling start and it makes the world a lot easily, race them in the light and give yrself a hard time, as easy as this.

I'd disagree on the 4wd being the launching gift that some people think it is, Maxx.

Yes, it definitely works better, but as GTRSTI said earlier, the stock clutch will just let go to protect everything... if they've upgraded the clutch, then it'd be a different story, but then again, every rex I've had a blat against, I've gotten the jump on them.

You have 'handling' and 'grip' mixed up.. the handing of a stock wrx is pretty average.. it does have a nice feel, and feels like its going fast, but a stock wrx handles like a dog, understeer, body roll, you name it.

R u sayin that a stock R32 GTST will beat a 33 GTS-25T?

Er, no, I don't have them mixed up, don't need grip in a straight line. :D He's had a thicker front sway bar and whiteline springs installed.

Sciby: its a common misconception that wrx's (b4's even) handle well, when they dont, they have good grip, and they 'feel' like they are cornering quickly, still havn't figured out why they feel that way, but handling and grip aren't the same thing...

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
