well the rb25 is only a little bigger than the rigi BMW engines.. only thing is the exhaust is on a different side, as with fuel lines..

yeah.... thats the biggest problem i have been told.... custom manifold ect....

does any one know much about the 1jz twin turbo soarer engine? how do you think that that would go in the BMW? just trying to look at as many options as i can before i decide.

is having a 50/50 wight ratio really important? why?

yeah i reckong the 1jz would fit, exhaust on the right side etc!

50/50 is what you would want to keep if your thinking of doing track work! thats what helps these cars handle so well, perfectly balanced! upset that balance and the the characteristics (?) of the car chance completely!

like steering, cornering, braking ect?

if the engine was way heavier. would upgrading the suspension and brakes (i know you have to do this with a bigger engine anyway) be the best way to hinder these problems? and get the car handling better?

the 1jz would be a awesome transplant i think, what about the gearbox, tail shaft ect, any idea how that would go? i understand this is a nissan forum, ill ask on a toyota one, but any help/ personal oppinions greatly aprechiated

just having a little think about it,,,,, when i think of the chaser's the 1jz came from i think that the gearbox will be a huge problem fitting into the existing tunnel for the car! also gear stick placement will be a problem! have you seen how small the original g/box in these E30's are???? they are tiny so it may be an issue......

although the E30's use linkages external to the box so this may allow a bit more room for a larger box, that only being id the 1jz g/box is internal linkage like the rb25 boxes!

i dont think that they are interchangeable from rb20 to rb25... the allignment etc would be off.. however i have a feeling that they would be rather large like the rb25 boxes!

someone with an rb20 may be able to confirm!

just thought id mention it as it took a fair bit of work to fit a CA18DET into a sprinter, the hole for the gear shift had to be moved back about 100mm, and changed the way the dash sits within the car!

Ladies and Gentlemen, as promised (and after rummaging through a sh*tload of magazines...), diff ratios for E30s (courtersy of 'Bimmer' magazine, Dec '98):

2.73:1 --------- 325e

2.93:1 --------- 325e

3.45:1 --------- 323i (euro - what we have here)

3.73:1 --------- 325i(s)

3.90:1 --------- '84 - '85 318i (case different, ring and pinion fits)

4.10:1 --------- '91 318i

4.10:1 --------- E30 M3

4.22:1 --------- '91 - '92 318i convertible

From other models, but with modifications:

3.25:1 --------- E28 533i/535i (case bolts into E30, but with E30 cover plate)

3.90:1 --------- E28 M5 / E24 M6 (ring and pinion, LSD fit into E30 diff housing)

As far as I know, most of these diffs come as slippers and open diffs. You can get them repacked (reshimmed) to increase the lock - the last one I had in mine was a 70% locker... noisy but tight and held well.

NB: to tell the diff ratio (and if it is a slipper) the tags are on the back of the diff next to the speedo sender. Eg: "S4,10 XXXX" is a 4.1 LSD. Note these tags can be switched, so be careful.

excelent, thanks heaps for that robin. ill have to talk with some bmw people, see whats available etc, but im keeping that info....

the more i think about it, and the more i get told, the easier the sr sounds to do. the gearbox goes in no worries and lines up with the hole and everything. and then nissan nose just needs to be welded on to the tailshaft.

i think that ill just go with the sr.... (sigh) would have liked a bigger one, but i probably dont need it, i know i wont need it. maybe later, ill be happy with the 2L turob, ill get some mods for it... he he

the 325i block and im pretty sure a twin cam head from the 530 will go on,, that something we are looking into :rofl:

but the bmw have a really good bottom end, huge rods, just need some better forgies and decompression then turbo the thing!

Craved, the basic block architecture for the M20 and the M40 (i think it is this designation, ie. the straight sixes from E36) are the same. Thats why I could build a 2.9L from my 325 block using a E36 328i crank.

It wouldn't surprise me if an E36 twin cam head bolted up to the bottom end of an E30 six...

yeah im pretty sure the twin cam heads do bolt up! just gotta find one!

didn't realise the 328i crank would fit though, does this just increase the stroke? wouldn't that drop the engines rev range?

just had an idea sugested to me,

go out and get a '79 320i 2.0L (an example) engine out of a junk yard. Rebuild it and throw into the 318. then turbo it later......

The factory 2.0 had a longer throw crankshasft at 80mm instead of the 71mm of the 1.8 in the 318. I think thats what the difference was. They had the same piston size at 89mm. The big difference was that the 2.0 had a double roller cam timing chain while the 1.8 had only a single roller cam timing chain. Bmw did turbo a 2002 back in the 70's. So the engine can handle it for sure.

    • Take the value it measured as, and pick the closest range available that is above the reading on the screen.   Also, no point just testing the coils. Read what has been said again. You need to test all your wiring, everything.
    • Does the scanner do all the CUs in the car, or only the ECU?
    • @666DAN sorry to bring you and old thread.     I've got my de+t done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.    Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd when selected . But nothing when in  drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic. I'm sure there is maybe 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Do ya have any ideas?     Cheers man
    • Well I recently changed my rear axles and was thinking if I bumped anything, I have been driving the car for a while now though... But it has been raining today so everything is wet under the wheel arches. Brakes feel fine and can't hear any of the metal screamers, I had a squeak coming from one of the handbrake drums but that seems to have gone away a while ago. I was going down a hill when it lit up and I did feel the abs bite for a second and question why it did it?
    • Correct. Um. I dunno. I haven't cared enough about the way that the NA cars work to know for sure. But..... The 33/34 turbo manual cars have an electronic speed sensor in the gearbox that outputs a +/- (ie, sawtooth AC) voltage signal. That is connected to the speedo. The speedo then outputs a 0-5v square wave (ie, PWM) signal that the ECU (and any other CU on the bus) sees. The speed sensor is NOT directly connected to the ECU. So here's the problem. Your new ECU expects to see the PWM signal, but must somehow be getting a direct signal from the diff speed sensor. Which would suggest that the wiring of the NA car is not the same as the turbo cars. I think you will need to spend some time with (hopefully the wiring diagram for the car) and a multimeter to see what is connected to what. Then, presuming I am correct**, you would then want to separate the ECU speed signal input from the rest of the car's wiring, and probably either buy a speed signal converter, or build one using an arduino (or similar). That would take in the speed sensor signal and output a scaled (and suitably rearranged) signal for the ECU. ** We shouldn't presume that I am correct here, because there might be something else crazy going on. I don't think you could convert the speedo to be fed from the gearbox sensor, because the pulse rate from that sensor is probably different to the diff sensor and then the speedo would read wrongly. And this also wouldn't fix the ECU's problem either, because the ECU doesn't want to see the gearbox signal direct either (assuming that they are all on the same wiring, for some odd NA related reason, see above caveat!) Does this help? Probably not. Can you make it work? Almost certainly. With the above work. You should buy a handheld oscilloscope from Aliexpress so that you can view these signals directly. Connect up the probes and drive the car. Show photos of the screen when drving at known speeds and connected to different places, and we'll see what we can learn about it.
