hey guys

I have done a serch on this and found a little bit of info about it. But not enough! ;)

I have done a serch through www.capa.com.au and they recomended that there oil coolers are also able to "make a great fuel cooler to". Found out that the Range Rovers - Bmw's etc etc also use a fuel cooler.

Now this got me really interested so off I set to super cheap/repco etc etc They have got off the shelf Transmition Oil Cooler kit for 6cyl cars. Would somthing like that be suitable for Fuel cooling? Next time im back there I will have a bit more of a look for what pressure it can take. Unless sombody has an idea as to what a tranny usally runs at pressure wise.

Any extra info would be great guys

Take it easy

Try asking SydneyKid, Warpspeed... I remember a thread about fuel coolers, and am quite sure they mentioned some interesting points. If I recall correctly, they mentioned some mob from the US that sell these "esky" type things for your fuel/fuel pump.

I know you said you did a search but maybe try agian.

hey mate

I looked at the "esky" type thing and i really dont like the idea of having to carry ice around everywhere I go. I would much rather have a more perminant solution rather than somthing just melting away. In that thread they were talking about the BMW one that could be modified to suit and mounted somwhere in the frount bar.

Hi riceline, fuel runs at ~75 psi so you need a cooler that can hold that sort of pressure. Auto transmission or power steering coolers are not really rated for continuous use at that sort of pressure, from what I have seen. So I would reckon an oil cooler would be the most likely option. Maybe have a talk to Martin at Earls (www.earls.com.au) he has lots of experience with coolers.

Before you go ahead, I would strongly suggest you measure the temperature of the fuel going into your engine and compare it with the ambient temperature of the day. You may well find it to be a waste of time. That's why we use the ice cooled method.

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
