My GTR isn't running too crash hot.

It's missing something shocking. But it only seems to do it when it is warm after bout 20mins of driving.

Ive changed the plugs and put Splitfire Coilpacks in it and its still bad.

Any other suggestions???

Is it missing only underload or all the time?. If it's missing underload and mainly after it gets hot you might be looking at a faulty CAS(crank angle sensor). If it's missing even when free reving out of gear you may have one or two dirty AFM's that need cleaning or a shot.

What plugs are you running and at what gap?.

Not sure what the gap is on the plugs but I had a set in them for 2 months before this started happening. they are NGK Platinum BKR7EVX.

It misses all through the rev range and even at idle. It idles very rough. Ive noticed the oil pressure down realllllly low. Not sure if that is tied in with this problem or it is another problem.

How about injectors being clogged up?? Im taking them down tomorrow to get them cleaned. Ill keep you posted to see if it works.

I got the new coil packs, not the standard GTR ones but new Splitfire ones.

Ken, he said he's changed them already.. There was a thread by Warz some time ago, and 7heaven is on the mark, turned out to be the CAS which was way out.. and caused heep of detonation.

Oops sorry, my bad.

That's what you get for not reading the post properly and hungover.

I would suggest get a w/shop to do a quick check of the timing and a/f ratios.

It may be a dead fuel pump, dodgy a/f meters ( quite common) or maybe a gasket has gone on the intake and allowing a lean mixture on 1 or 2 cylinders.

Cheers

Ken

  • 1 month later...

also check out the cam angle sensor...get a tech to scope pins 1 & 2 on the 4 pin plug. pin 2 is the 1 degree signal & pin 1 is the 120 degree signal. 0 - 5v square wave. Pin 3 is 12v pin4 is ground....I think :)

I just scoped my mates 300ZX cam angle sensor and found 2 of the 6 120 degree signals dropping out. This won't be enough to cause a hard fault code in the ECU but will make the engine run very rough at odd times.

We will be replacing it with a friends good CAS and verify that its indeed the problem ..

regards Mike

Two options I can suggest:

May be the exciter module (finned aluminium module at the back of the coil cover)

These are the same as used on the RB20 motor. Borrow a known good one from a friend and see if this does the trick.

Secondly, check the coil harness. The earthing spade/lug may be dirty and not making good contact. Also check the coil pack connectors for cracks. If nothing obvious, then again see if you can borrow a harness and swap this for a trial.

Good luck

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
