I was travelling down Hepburn Ave in Kingsley this morning when I drove past a speed camera (no photo opportunity tho) and didn't see the flouro sign - the sneaky b@stard had hidden that behind bushes as well, so you had to turn your head left just to see it.

So looks like now they are not only hiding the cameras but the signs as well.

In the states they are illegal in, they confiscate them on the spot, and actually charge you for owning them.

The detectors are kept for evidence and when the court/fine has finished, they are incinerated.

Id love to get access to one of those stockpiles. Instead of using cameras to revenue raise, why dont they sell the confiscated ones over here at half price, thatd raise some revenue.

Id be able to buy a decent detector too, see win win situation.

mine cost about $800 9 months ago and has easily paid for itself twice over not to mention the saved demerits.

Is it fully legal to actually use a radar detector in WA or is it only legal to own one?

I heard somewhere that if you get pulled over you need to unplug it or you get fined.

Is this true in WA?

I thought it wasn't illegal to buy one or own one but I remember hearing you weren't supposed to actually use it - well, duh !!! why would you buy it if you weren't going to use it.

Mind you, if the cops can see you have one then they would wait to try and get you for something as they figure the only reason you have one is so you can speed and not get caught.

Like those number plate covers that I thought were illegal too but they were advertised by an automotive retailer not so long ago

Where are the best places to buy a detector?

my radar detector is an old crappy uniden. I got done around the corner from my house last week, doing 67 in a 50 zone (well that day i was taking it easy, its usually more than that, if you saw the smooth, gentle, long winding road you wouldnt be able to resist either).

The cop pulled me over, started writing the ticket, he said, so youve got a radar detector eh?

I said yes, but it obviously doesnt work too well (with a bit of sarcasm).

and that was it, they ovbiously arent illegal to use, cause mine was in plain view, and hooked up and on at the time, no extra ticket or fine, or inspection of my car or anything.

Those who say quickly disconnect it just look stupid as they get pulled over.

Laser jammers though, are illegal to own and use.

I got done a couple of months ago at that same location.

In fact I drove the other way first and specifically looked for it (as seen it there before) but saw nothing.

Five minutes later travelling the other way got pinged for 76 in a 70 zone which in itself is a bit rough.

Anyway there was no way a sign was placed there.

Okay you can have a RADAR dectector in WA but apprently importing them is illegeal (go figure). I tried buying an Escort detector via the web one a few years ago and they refused to sell it to me because of the weird laws over here.

Cops can detect your detector using V2 technology.. but there are anti V2 detectors as well. Those Jammers are a waste of money. If you read the doco on them they only work under some specific conditions.

There is a mob in Subi that does the best ones but be prepared for the cost $$$$

the BEL 980 detector picks up all radar and laser used currently in WA as far as I know.

Cop cars behind/infront of me set it off and so do the guys on the side of the road with the laser handhelds.

Best money I ever spent, haven't had a single ticket since buying the 'line (touch wood).

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.

    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
