Rebuilding FJ costs

Hi all,

I'm just starting to think about rebuilding the FJ in the DR (along with everything else in it) and was wondering what I can expect a decent top to bottom build to cost?

I don't want to replace the rods, just get 'em peened, replace pistons, bore, valve springs etc.

So a full build, I've never rebuilt any kind of dohc motor properly so I don't know what to expect.

Any ideas?

Depends how far you want to go with the build-up.I spend $4500 on my long motor,built for 25psi all day If you just want a basic rebuild,you could probablly halve that.

I got quotes for a basic rebuild of my FJ, drive in drive out bout 2k..Considering timing chain is going to cost me 1k to replace, i think i'll spend the extra $$$ and rebuild the motor hehehe

I'm sorta debatingover what I want a bit. Realy its just a how much do i want to spend. The "plan" is to build it with about 9.0:1 comp, so its got decent off boost response and add boost from there. So I'd probably only be aiming at 12-15psi on top of that, but I may get greedy i don't know. Thats what seems to happen. I'd like to know its not going to explode at higher revs, I know it'll go to 8 and not explode, so I guess I'd like to see 8500 or something. haha this is sounding very full rebuild + your first born son stuff now. I could probably spend less on the motor and spend more a good computer.

But yeah, thats the dream at the moment.

Yep,all parts and labour costs....ut don't forget if you go that far with the engine,you should budget a couple of grand for a decent turbo to make use of it!

and a computer too. I think i'd rather upgrade the computer than the turbo, just rebuild it. 25psi huh, must be great fun to drive

Yay I'm up for all these costs plus more. After managing to put a piston through my turbo and stuffing my head.

Yes,computer too.However,using a rebuilt stock turbo on a "full tilt" motor,would be a waste.

Sadly I wouldn't know if my engine's fun to drive on 25psi...As yet it's only seen 10.
