Hi,

I'm considering a job in Japan for next year, and wondering what's involved in bringing a car back with me to Australia that I would buy over there?

I'm aware that I'd need to have proof of ownership for 12 months or greater, but I'm unsure of how the process differs from the Low Volume Import scheme. Apart from not needing the same type of compliance as a Low Volume import, what other differences are there?

Would the car need to be registered and used, or could it be bought at the beginning of the year, warehoused, and then import as a private import?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

I have heard rumours that if you have owned the car for over 12 months living in Japan it can be bought over as a private import and thus does not have t comply with ADR's as not part of the low volume import category.

This would be quite cool indeed.

so BY BY you're saying u dont have to pay for compliance with costs a few grand and is increasing in march 2003 to something rediculous so its too costly to import???

that would be so awesome if thats what u mean. i might be heading off to hong kong in about a year to work. hmmm.. maybe i could have an r35 in a few years... hehee....

to be eligible for personal import you need to supply the following..... Parking permit,registration documents in your name,Insurance documents,passport(stating that you have been in a particular country for over 12mnths).Once an impot approval has been issued,you can send the car.Once it arrives the car will need to be checked by an engineer.Seatbelts will need to be changed if they dont have an e marking,child restraints be fitted,unleaded filler neck and some other stuff depending on the model of the vehicle.In regards to a car from hk...id forget about it as the tax payable on buying a car and owning it for a year in hk would out way the cost of just buying it straight from japan...especially a model such as a new 2 door skyline which will be eligible under the new sevs scheme anyway.....hope this helps

yep....the same duty applies...although i beleive there is a depreciation form that you can fill out but its not woth the hassle...unless you owned the car for 5 years..then the purchase price would be dearer than the current market price.I got pics but how do you post them to apare on the screen and not as an attachement???

Yo Waxman, I'm considering going to Japan next year aswell.....

You gonna be teaching english over there or doing something else?

Keep us all informed of how everything pans out for you.......I'm sure that if you go over you'll have no spare time because you'll be too busy finding cheap parts for everyone here! :lol:

    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers    
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
