hey guys i thought this was an interesting factor for anyone with a stag because the brakes r bloody shite for a turbo nissan, and considering the weight is alot more than the r33 skyline rb25s they should not have put non-turbo brakes on it :bs!:

so...

i reckon the best and easiest upgrade would be the r33 brembo front and rear calipers, but i wonder if the rear calipers will fit on the stagea diff, cause i know the 260rs use a gtr diff also.

i wanted to use nissan parts so its easier for getting it legal etc :P

anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

thanks

Brad

Yeah the brakes - not the most awe inspiring are they? Press the pedal then a momentary pause as you feel the full weight of the car running on behind you, then the brakes seem to kick in... 'spongy' comes to mind...

Enhanced Nissan brake mod details would be good and well worth it IMHO. Once you get the ride sorted out, it would be well worth the cost to feel as if it is all going to stop without hesitation when you really need it...

:P

the R33 GTR brakes is normally over priced IMO.

better get some R34 GTT front (310mm) and skyline 2 pot rear

and the rest invest on some aftermarket rotor and pads

safT: wonder will the 16" still fit after convert to GTT brake?

yeah I wont be spending 'brembo money' on an upgrade, hell my car is only going to be a streeter, so i'll be going the R33/4 Gts/t brake upgrade, just the 4 pots, should be a simple conversion and well worth the money.

  • 2 weeks later...

just a question for u guys....

what size rotors can i run with the r32 gtr calipers??? i was hoping to get 330mm ones so i can use them when i upgrade to r33 gtr brembos.

what size rotors are 32 gtr? 33gtst? 33gtr???

also are r32 gtr and r33 gts-t calipers exactly the same????

thanks

  • 1 month later...

As we all know the brakes on the RS4 Stagea are kind of small. The rear disk and caliper look about the same size as the rear brakes on my sisters laser infact the pad area and caliper piston capacity looks smaller than the front brake on my dirt bike and the front look about the same as the rear brakes on my R33 GTSt.

As has been mentioned in pervious posts that most Skyline family brakes or aftermarket kits should fit on without to much drama. What about the effect on the ABS and the master cylinder size?

Does any one know what the master cylinder size is on the Stagea vs R33 /4 GTSt and GTR and the caliper piston sizes?

Nissan would have matched the master cylinder size to the caliper piston size to give the desired pedal feel and due to the smaller calipers and therefore caliper piston area the master cylinder on the Stagea would be smaller than on a Skyline.

I am a little concerned that if upgrading to R33/4 GTSt, GTR etc calipers and disk you could almost be doubling the caliper piston area. This would mean that the small standard Stagea master cylinder would have to be compressed twice as far as it would in a Skyline with the larger sized master cylinder therefore giving a rather spongy pedal.

Warning... hang on, the following is a little complex ....

The Stagea front and rear calipers are pretty much the same as the non M Spec R32 GTST. The R32 GTST M Spec callipers are the same as the R32GTR callipers. Except the fronts have longer ears to move the front callipers further out, this clears the drive shafts/cv's and give a larger diamter disc for more stopping leverage. But the pistons etc are the same.

I have driven a non M Spec R32 GTST that had the M Spec callipers fitted, but still using the non M Spec master cylinder. The pedal feel was pretty much the same as my M Spec, in fact maybe even a little firmer.

Let me say straight up I am not a hydraulics engineer. The logic is, there are 4 small pistons compared to one large piston and that large piston has to move twice as far (sliding calliper). So the calculation would be pretty simple, compare the area of the 2 small pistons with the area of the 1 large piston.

Let's do the numbers, using my guess of the piston diameters....

Sliding calliper, 1 X 70 mm piston is 38.5 sq cm

4 Spot Calliper, 2 X 50 mm pistons are 39.3 sq cm

It would appear to me that the the small difference in area is unlikely to affect the pedal movement to piston movement ratio. Hence the "feel" would be very similar.

The next step would be to accurately measure the piston diameters and do the calculations properly. But knowing Nissan's love for using the same parts (over and over, from model to model) I would be surprised if the master cylinder bore diameters are much diiferent.

Hope that made some sense:cheers:

PS; our Stagea already has the brake shudders (warped disks), so I am going to try a set of DBA slotted disks and some Bendix Ultimate pads. If that doesn't improve the braking performance enough, then I will look around for a cheap set of R33GTR callipers (ones in need of rebuild would be good). First job is to check the DBA catalogue for the appropriate size rotors for the Stagea.

Hey sk if you need a set of 32 GTR brakes can get you a set of 4 calipers for $300 + freight. A mate of mine has got heaps last time i spoke to him.

Let me know.

Cheers

Gary

And I am about to do that exact conversion next week when the cv boots arrive.

That's appealing, I will put a hold on the DBA discs. Then I might wait and see how you get on.:D

just for the record ..the brembo setup on my 260 is nothing short of brilliant.

i have r32gtr driver atm ...stagea would outbrake it by a the proverbial mile ... no comparison really

if you really want to pull up a stagea i suggest you copy this autech /brembo setup

my0.02 worth

Strange huh? We have 2 X R32GTR race cars, one with Brembos and one without and they both stop the same. The tyres always let go first, they are the weakest link.:D

PS; it is worth mentioning that they are both maintained as you would expect a race car to be. The rotors are perfect, the fluid is renewed every meeting and the pads are high coeficient of friction Hawk Carbotics. As soon as the maintenance drops off, the braking quality dissappears. It seems to be more important than the brand of calliper.

i have 3 gtr`s atm ... stagea will outbrake them all including one with braided lines and fancy coloured pads

not sure if its just brembos but disc/pads(genuine)and calipers are superior combination to any gtr i have driven

sk or any stagea owner thinking about upgrade can drive mine and find out for themselves...

you should be surprised

I will have a play around and do a through comparison between my R33GTSt and the Stagea over the weekend and get some measurement.

SK you explanation makes sense now that I think about it more. All Falcons from the base small 2 pot front and 1 pot rear up to the big 4 pot and 2 pot Brembos on the GT’s use the same booster and master cylinder.

I think with a heavier car like the Stagea the brakes are more likely to be the week link rather than the tyres.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
