Archie@
Might have something to do with the fact that those cars cost a shit load of dosh , and the people that are in a position to buy them are experienced drivers who have been there and done that, and know the limits on the road Just so every one has an idea bout what really goes on, there are plenty of people out there driving these vehicles and crashing. I work as a personal injury assessor for a prominent insurance company, and see all sorts of high performance vehicles in a sorry state. Its amazing how only certain vehicles get the media coverage. and just to top it off with the government crack down on our beloved hobby, they go ahead and shut down Oran Park on us!!!!!!! Absolute disgrace by the NSW govt. ER3498GTT
this is not a simple issue..... I agree the main problem is that young people today put "image" or showing off before being responsible and if ya do screw up its someone elses fault....ahhh the american way! The culture of blame..... You can educate, you can do whatever but ya cant stop people from being stupid or acting irresponsibly... Of course governments have knee jerk reactions afterall they have to appear as though they are answering the concerns of the public....votes depend on it! Seems to me here that one important player has been left out of this debate....the finance industry.....finance is so accessible now. They have access to cars at a much earlier age, with limited experience that previously were limited to those with the livelihood to support it and usually more driving experience. We can only hope, that when government does make its policy decision that they have adequately consulted all interest groups....cus thats the only way effective policy is made. Don't ever expect a solution though....policy is only ever good for resolution. Its important, that us with modified imports make our voice be heard for all that appreciate our cars. leb
Don't blame the Government FFS, all I hear is "F**k the RTA bro" and "It's the governments fault" - it doesn't work like that. The RTA every year spends COPIOUS amounts of money on trying to reach all drivers to prevent crashes. Speed camera's are there to pay off the advertisements they have to broadcast to tell people to SLOW DOWN. But still, idiots in all sorts of cars choose to ignore it, but its usually high-performance ones that have worse crashes as they are able to reach higher speeds much easilier as we all know. BLAME the media, Eg. Daily Telegraph - The biggest sh*tstirrers in NSW. They make up rumours and bend the truth to get everyone angry. The media are the biggest sh*tstirrers, If you want to listen to actual (barely opinionative news) try the ABC. At the same time I'm sick to death hearing about crashes. Deadsh*ts who drive out of their limits on PUBLIC roads (ie, a ROAD... NOT a RACETRACK) deserve to kill themself because they couldn't have any less common sense. Me being a P plater with a car that attracts attention, the last thing I want in my busy life is for people to be blaming me because I'm a P-Plater. Its like they are fortune tellers predicting I'm automatically going to wrap myself around a pole. I don't drive out of my limits. Don't Flame me, I pay my respects to the families of the victims from these type of crashes I think its depressing indeed as I hope you all think the same. People, speeding isn't worth it on public roads especially when you're driving out of your limits. saff_cossie
The problem will take a long time to overcome as to achieve a satisfactory out come will take years. Here is why (similar to another post of mine on another thread) Small cars with small non turbocharged engines should be the start - no more than 1200cc. The problem here is the lack of Australian built ones of these from years gone by. There are hardly any. If this was enforced, sure there are Excels and Festivas but what does that do for aussie jobs. Big powerful car, even just a powerful car = more confidence on the road. Whether you choose to use that confidence is what seperates the moorons from the sensible ones. Trouble is at 18, 19, 20 that can be hard to resist. Insurance companies that say we will insure you for XXXX figure rather than clear off and wait until you are 25. Most of us on here think souped up excels look shite including myself but that is what young drivers should be doing. Bodywork modifications to a small engined car. I dont begrudge a young driver modifying his/her car as I have been there but limit it to non performance enhancing mods. Looks yes, performance no. Get some years under their belts and get a high performance when their head has cooled down a bit. Theres a magna on Pender St, Thornbury thats had its boot tied down with rope for the past 3+ years (looks like they backed into a pole), and now its missing its right indicator and has for the last 2-3months. See it driving around (badly) on a daily basis with no problems. Wheres the justice? I wish people paid as much attention to 4WD's as they do to Skylines. Most 4WDs are so high they completely miss the crumple zones on other cars and are potentially more dangerous than HPVs. Especially when you live in Melb and most 4WD'ers are tailgaters, assho**s and think they own the road caus they're virtually sitting in a indestructible tank. Grew up seeing my father driving a jeep cherokee everyday.. the way he swerves through traffic used to terrify me. Don't Flame me, I pay my respects to the families of the victims from these type of crashes I think its depressing indeed as I hope you all think the same. People, speeding isn't worth it on public roads especially when you're driving out of your limits. so you reckon all these speed camera's and anti-speeding propaganda the RTA carries on with is actually road safety, than you should try reading this study. Independent research proves speed cameras are uselessBritish sociologist Alan Buckingham today releases his paper Speed Traps: Saving Lives or Raising Revenue? at a Centre for Independent Studies lecture in Sydney. Dr Buckingham claims in his report, published in the CIS journal Policy, that speed campaigns such as Queensland's "Every K over is a killer" are flawed. His report claims speed cameras have not reduced the road toll but created a rift between citizens and police and made drivers inattentive to traffic by watching speedos. Dr Buckingham says Speed cameras have not worked because: Speed is not a major factor in road fatalities. The statistics used by Australian and British governments which show speeding is involved in 30% of road accidents are flawed, for they include factors such as ‘fatigue’ and ‘alcohol’ which are not speed related. The British Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) finds that just 7.3% of accidents were caused primarily by excessive speed. Most safe drivers speed. US research has established that those who speed moderately – 10-20km/h above the posted speed limit - tend to be the safest drivers. It is those who travel well above and below the posted speed limit who are the most risky drivers. ‘The law bears down heavily on the safest drivers who are travelling at about the 85th percentile of the speed of the traffic speed but above the speed at which the cameras operate, whilst some of the most dangerous drivers, who drive slowly, who are drunk or careless, are not caught.’ The onslaught against speeding motorists is likely to damage the relations between citizens and police. ‘Millions of motorists are being convicted each year for a driving behaviour that is perfectly safe, whilst increasing numbers of criminals are not caught. It is likely that motorists will come to view the police’s actions as cynical and unfair.’ Speed cameras discourage the culture of driver responsibility which is a major factor in the good road safety record of both Australia and Britain. ‘We run the risk of creating a nation of speedometer watchers who drive according to the dictates of the camera rather than according to the prevailing road conditions.’ Cameras can contribute to road fatalities by distracting drivers, increasing frustration, encouraging sudden braking, and diminishing the initiative to drive at speeds appropriate for the conditions. The study shows conclusively that the rate of decline in the road toll coincides with the increasing obsession that our state governments have with speed enforcement. it also points out just how rare an event a vehicle accident is. In Australia we have just one death per 109 million kilometres travelled. Alan Buckingham will present a CIS lecture based on the report in Sydney on Wednesday 29 October. (details) Alan Buckingham is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Bath Spa University - We note that Carl Scully, on the 7.30 Report, said "I've never heard of a sociologist being an expert in road safety." We can only suggest that Mr Scully checks the credentials of his own favoured "experts". Most are psychologists and statisticians! Copies of the report Speed Traps: Saving Lives or Raising Revenue?’ are available in the Spring edition of 'POLICY' (at selected newsagents) and also from the safespeed website ) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/59136-i-hate-to-say-i-told-you-so-modified-car-owners-about-to-become-public-enemy-no1/page/3/#findComment-1135353 Share on other sites
Mulkers
It's guilty until proven innocent... always has been. Not just this though, it costs money, time and a good lawyer to even be considered innocent And anyone how is over the age of 36 Australia wide is partially to blame. This is because the Hawk Government held a referendum, part of which was for a bill of rights to be added to our constituion. It was rejected with a national 'yes' vote of just 32%, with Victoria's 'yes' vote being the highest at 50%. If we had constitutional rights we may have powers to do something. SKY031
When I was a young teen, it was cool to smoke. If you wanted to be cool, that was what you did. Now if you want to be cool, all you have to do is drive fast. In the end it's all the same. If you need to show off to your mates in order to be "cool", you're probably going to end up dead. I have a lot of respect for a P plater in a nice car who can take off from the lights without tyre squeal, but in 10+ years of driving, I can't say I've seen this happen very often. IQ tests & regular licence re-testing for all. Anyone with an IQ under 120 shouldn't be able to drive. There is more common sense than skill involved in driving, and the people who lack basic common sense should be kept off the road. The_Paladin
shite i think i scored 118 or something (real test, not a TV one) there definatly are individuals that could handle a sports car on their p's but they're not the majority i agree with sky031 when suggests that. i know i could handle responsable drinking at the age of 16 but i agree with the current drinking laws because i know the majority of people that age couldnt.......hell the majority of people ages 18 cant either. a p-plater ban dosent suggest all p-platers are dickheads...........just enough to cause a problem..... leb
78vbsle Are you stupid? Speeding kills. Seen the ad lately with the two falcons with same driver and reaction time? Why do the RTA specialise in spending a majority of their Budget on Speeding, Drink Driving and Fatigue? Why is there a "speed blitz" and not a fatigue blitz? BEcause speeding is a major factor in road fatalties. Cars don't snap in half from going the speed limit. I give up on trying to explain my point but clearly the RTA makes as much effort as they can to get idiots off the road.
