HELP?! RB20 New head on - badly clicking followers?

Recommended Posts

Guy's just refitted head on the RB20 and found on starting that there is a loud tapping/clicking noise like the cam followers not pumping up.

DAMN was I supposed to line up the holes in the followers in the side oil rail??

Only just thought of this after hearing noise. Do I have to take the cams back out;-(

On a positive note the idle is smooth even with the 550cc RX7 Injectors and mod AFM Box to try and compensate -looks like it worked, will have to dyno asap.

Any comments appreciated and I promise to do a search soon. :)

Have you driven it yet or was that straight after startup?

Common thing with everything from RB20 to RB30

Will be noisy for ten to twenty minutes unless you prepped them first.

You will find that a nice drive around the block will quiet them up. If it doesn't then you may have other problems.

Hi 3LIT3 FORS3, thanks for that, I was starting to get really worried I would have to pull the cams again.

I had only started it about 10/15 times for a few min to get the oil going through the new cooler and to make sure the new 550 cc Injectors were operating OK.

Last time I tried them they were frozen up. This time they are all OK!

Aparently they dont like sitting around for a few months before you use them :)

Thanks again, will drive it soon.

I'm sure you will find as soon as it drives around a bit after the oil temp and pressure levels reach their operating values, the noise will disappear. It will go away if you let it sit for ages idling (like half an hour - sometimes sooner, sometimes never). With every one I have done, it has taken a drive around the block to clear them up.

Good luck with it

    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
    • Hi.. Just another problem. So maybe you can help. I(my mechanic) done swap from my RB20DE NEO to RB25DET NEO. Everything is OK but we have a boost cut. Coils/Plugs are ok...AFM is ok. ECU is ok. I have Walbro 255 but it "changed" sound few months ago(you can hear it ouside) you did not hear that when it was new(maybe faulty?) Sooo...what now? What can cause this boost cut? It is even when you standing still...
