Aw11,

Yeah in Japan they have 104RON at there servo's, but to them the cost is not substantial in relation to wage percentage. They also have alot more turbocharged cars compared to Australia, the Holdens and Fords simply don't need it, sure it will give you a bit more power but there wasn't the market for it.

But it is good to see then almost every servo has PULP(96RON) and BP have the Ultimate(98RON), and the number of people using it has increased substantially, so there may be hope that a higher octane fuel will be available here one day.

Macka,

I think you can get enough toluene to boost 100litres of PULP to 101.3RON for about $48, I have the suggested mix in a magazine I read last night, once I get home I'll post the info.

Makit hardware sell the stuff, $23 for a 4L tin. If you get it off BP(not the servos) you can buy 20/40/100L quantities and its very cheap. Just remember to talk about using it as a 'solvent' (not a fuel additive) as they are prohibited from selling it as a fuel additive.

Adam: the adding of toluene isn't an 'experimental' idea its as old as the hills, like I said before formula 1 cars ran on 'pure' toluene with a dash of n-heptane.

I'd be inclined to add some for those special occasions given our fuels are absolute crap compared to jap stuff. Why wouldn't you do it if it meant protecting your motor from increased wear and possible failure due to pre-ignition?

Adam32,

1/4 mile times aren't a good reflection of how your car will perform on the street. A drag strip is treated to give better traction, most people use octane booster etc. Going to the drags is about posting the best time you can with the mechanical setup you have, if you can improve the time you get with toluene etc, then why not do it.

On the street you can get beaten by cars that you might thrash on the 1/4, but that's because your not in a controlled situation. I'm planning on experimenting with different fuels when I go to the drags, i.e. straight BP Ultimate, octance booster and maybe VP.

Besides saying you've run a 12.5, even if you had to use toluene, is still something you can brag about.

Adam that has nothing to do with it tho..

I cant run 15psi during the day with that Top secret ROM i have because of the Advance it runs..

So im limited to about 12psi plus the fact that i usually run CALTEX because i have a work fuel card also brings my power down..

So basically on a normal day i probably have 250HP at wheels..

Maaaaate...

You could use the same argument when I used to drive 30kms out of my way to buy avgas, or when I premixed two stroke oil in my petrol cause I removed the oil metering pump on my RX4 rotory. Either way if you met me on the street you would see the everyday power of the daily driver as it kicked your arse.

I have loads of crap in my boot everyday, and I only left it in for the drags cause I went straight from work. If I took the 100 odd kgs out of my boot that would make me guilty of not reflecting 'everyday power' too.

At the end of the day each person decides what constitutes a 'hassle' when it comes to fuel additives. So give it a try and decide for yourself if toluene is worth the hassle.:(

BTW I think changing and checking the plugs is a far greater hassle than premixing toluene yet people are always doing this themselves.:D

I think that street radial tyres are a good limitation and no race fuels, but other than that whatever goes. Macka's car is street drivable, but you don't expect him to run the same on the street as he would at the drags, cause his car wouldn't last too long with that much advancement. All were trying to do is maximise the output for a few drags, the car is capable of it so why not.

At dyno shootouts and sound off comps they all do special things to maximise there results. I don't think most people put dry ice on there FMIC whilst driving, or drive with 140+dB stereos.

Anyway, everyone else is going to do it, so why not join them.

Mine was dynoed in the heat of the day with 98ron in it..

But for the drags i want the fastest time no matter what i have to do :(

True ???

true

but if you cant reproduce the times on an everyday basis then what does it count for. woopdedoo you got a 9 second flat 1/4 mile time or a 700hp dyno readout, but if you cant have that as everyday power then wheres the fun in driving your car? (given that its a daily driver)

There is no point comparing fuel additives with un-streetable engine components. At least when we are talking toluene. Nitro maybe.

Running a better fuel in your engine helps protect it from harm under stressfull circumstances most of all. Like when you are racing your car or just plain driving hard.

Well it counts for a whole lot of fun and certainly more g-forces doing the actual run. Rest assured your 'street time' or everyday power will be plenty of fun even if a little lower than the setting you have for the strip. In most cases you will run a faster 1/4 time on the 'road' than the strip purely for traction reasons.

Lets say you have a 9sec flat 700hp in road trim car. Does 'that' count for something? Sure it does! thats on the street.

But what if this same car has its power cranked to 800hp and runs an 8.5sec 1/4. Does that mean this car is no fun to drive on the street?

Clearly the difference between your street and strip configs is not worth looking at, its kinda silly. What matters is what level of comfort you are prepared to sacrifce on a car that you drive everyday. This is an individual choice. If someone doesn't like pouring in the toluene before putting in the pump gas perhaps another might object to putting petrol in thier own car entirely and choose to ride a bike to work.

Macka,

NO WONDER IT PINGS!!!! CALTEX IT SHITE FUEL!!!

Doc.

10psi on Caltex thats all i will run Champ

And it runs beautiful :D

15psi on bp98 however, makes the car ping running the standard 15degrees timing even in the cool!

Adam, My car was tuned at 2pm 30degrees with 296, so in theory, i have more, as a daily driver!

The octane additive was put in as an additive just in case it was pinging and i beleive it helped :(

Dont for get you used octane as well on wed night mr and that would of only been for a better time so you bit yourself on the arse my friend

my car doesnt ping on 98 octane at 14psi (what its tuned to) whether its 12midnight or 12midday. i only used octane booster because drag racing or any race conditions puts added stress on the engine/car

i dont believe it helped at all. because my car doesnt ping anyway, and i didnt run any higher boost or advanced timing...

adam octane booster increases the RON value as u know so will improve your performance a little even if teh car is tuned to 98 RON fuel

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
    • Hi.. Just another problem. So maybe you can help. I(my mechanic) done swap from my RB20DE NEO to RB25DET NEO. Everything is OK but we have a boost cut. Coils/Plugs are ok...AFM is ok. ECU is ok. I have Walbro 255 but it "changed" sound few months ago(you can hear it ouside) you did not hear that when it was new(maybe faulty?) Sooo...what now? What can cause this boost cut? It is even when you standing still...
