Guest JOnJ0n

Whats up, I recently just rebuilt my RB2.4 kit engine and when my HKS 264 cams for both intake and exhaust where installed they where installed at stock setting by the RB2.0 service manual. Now when I cranked my engine my car was making a tapping noise from the head, almost like the valve where hitting something or some of the hydraulic lifters went bad. Now the thing about this head is it was already on my RB2.4 engine before and the only thing that was taking out of the head was just the cams, all the rest of the internals of the head stayed inside (ex. valves, springs...) Now if my HKS 264 cams where set at stock settings do you think it would cause my valves to hit something? If so do you think it would cause any damage for about 10mins worth of running all together. Also I looked up my cams and I saw my cams should be set at 110 degrees for the intake and 115 for exhaust and stock settings are 0 degrees. Soooo do you think the stock settings would cause my valves to hit something? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

JOnJOn.

I'm pretty sure that the stock RB20 head/block are non-interferance, so the valves won't hit the pistons. BUT if you've changed the stroke - which you would to get the 2.4 - it'd be different.

Might be time to take the head off again :P

ouch... that's a shitload for cam gears... i thought they were about $220 each, or am i looking at shit brand?

I've got an RB25DE Non Turbo head to go on my 3lt block. What cams come in them? they are less then 256's aren't they? but a bit more aggressive than the RB25DET?

toda can be purchased ex jap new for around $220 each. You pay $600 odd when you purchase through the australian sales channel.

Until the local peformance parts retailers organise themselves properly and setup distribution channels just buy overseas, it's cheaper and quite often faster.

TODA AU - perhaps you should pull your head in. Many people import directly from Japan for the exact reasons rev stated. Customs dont hit gst or duty for private imports (not talking about quantity).

that aside - who the hell do you think you are? thought police? this forum is hear to share information, not slag off at people. You have just destroyed your credibility in my, and I am quite sure many other poeple's eyes. You have a go at sydneykid for no other reason it appears than to try and progress your own image. then you decide to start doing the same to others that are voicing an opinion - thats what this forum is for, if you dont like it perhaps you can take your attitude somewhere else that it may be appreciated.

As for meeting up with rev - I'd pay to see that, usually the smallest dog that barks the loudest.

I have no doubt you will have nothing but more abuse for me - but hey, I have to respect you before its likely to worry my so fire away if it will make you feel better.

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
