Hey everyone.. thought i'd just say hi as i'm new around here.. and don't wanna make too much of a fool of myself on post no.1..

I'm in sydney and currently in the process of finding a '97 R33 GTS-T Series II to purchase in the next couple of months so i'm pretty much trawling the forums to find out what ppl's thoughts are and also guides to purchasing one of these..

At the moment i'm leaning towards dealer with 3 yr warranty + rego.. but was wondering if ppl thought private sale is a better deal..

edit: Insurance I was quoted $1970 from justcars for ^^ car @ $22,000. I'm not sure if this is good or bad.. at the moment it appears everyone recommends Famous, i'll have to check them out..

Anyways thought i'd just say hi.. i'll start posting in appropriate areas soon with lotsa juicy questions..

also - i've got a copy of the R33 service manual in pdf if anyone is interested..

At the moment i'm currently looking at either Northshore Prestige which is quite close to me, also envy imports.

Northshore offer a 3 year warranty and they have a couple of Series II in stock, also envy have a SII however i'm not sure about whether they offer a warranty or not.

Is there anyone on this forum that has purchased from either of these, or anyone from the dealers online?

^^ Who were you referring too?

Gday champ, welcome to SAU.

My flatmate bought his car from Envy and it's only busted a fuel pump. On the other hand I've know a guy who took his car there and it came back with half a tank full of petrol gone and firing on one less cylinder. I've also spoken to a guy on the lot when looking for a car and he told me he takes car for a drive and they go very very hard after he winds the boost. Exact words.

I wouldn't bother with a warranty it's a load of crap in my experience, they cover all the things that will never break, I've had a car with one of these dealer warrenties and now I look back and think "ahh I was young I was stupid... no second time on that one".

If you keep your eye out on the forums you see some very nice cars and if you're not in a hurry you can pickup a very good deal and a very nice car.

But whatever you do get them inspected by someone who you trust and knows what they're doing - I can't stress this enough no matter how good a car looks.

Good luck.

Sites for both are:

www.envyimports.com.au

www.northshoreprestige.com.au

Yeah that's not a surprise, alot of places like to test cars out.. and test them hard.. you've goto expect that really..

As for a warranty, you've all said pretty much the same as what I was thinking in the back of my head.. when it comes down to it.. how often does a warranty really get used.

I'd rather get a car a bit cheaper, that's been well looked after.. So at the moment i'll probably hold out for a private one.

Also i'm not in any hurry.. i've got time, and if it means a better car than i'm happy to wait..

North shore prestige have a couple of good cars, relatively expensive though e.g. $1,000 - $2,000 more than I would have expected..

Yeah.. taking someone I know is a good idea, also i'll probably try and get a quick check over by a mechanic, get a compression test done. The usual.. there's a good guide on here I see..

I went to Northshore Prestige and found them pretty helpful when I was looking for a car last year. I didn't actually buy my car from them as I found a good example privately (much cheaper as well), but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them as a dealer. I think the name of guy I dealt with was Cristophe - good guy to deal with.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
