hitnrun
To be honest your chances of getting an apprenticeship at a performance workshop are pretty low. I mean if you frig up on an expensive car, they are up for thousands of dollars. Plus 90% of performance workshops are flat strap - they don't have the time to look after/train a young apprentice. They are only interested in making big bucks of hotted up cars. You would be better off looking for a regular and reliable workshop near where you live. They probably have the time to train you properly plus they would appreciate your help more. Remember you are there to learn, not just to brag about what cars you have/are working on. Once you complete your training, then look at doing some volounteer work for a performance shop. They know you are a good mechanic/helper - they won't have to worry about you and you will learn and understand a lot more because you know the ropes already. Understand also that some one under the age of 18 (if you are) can cause problems with workshops insurance, they may not be legally allowed to have you in the shop. Of course you may be lucky and get into a performance workshop, but your chances are next to nicks. Please don't take this as a negative critisism - it would be great if you got into the shop of your choice - just think about it and realise that you may not get what you want. Good luck, Tim Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/7388-lookin-for-mechanic-interested-in-takin-an-enprentice/#findComment-108903 Share on other sites
chaos
thanx tim for a well put reply insurance wont be a problem as i am covered by my skool (as this will be a skool based apprenticeship for a year) then i go onto full time im just lookin for experience on nissans (skylines preferably but that may be hard as u said) cause hopefully fingers crossed i get on in mid febuaray and i want to work on it myself. yes it may seem stupid a 17 yr old tryin to buy a skyline i hear it all from my family lol my dad thinks im the only one who will be able to get it. but yeh anyway thanx for ur reply tim i'll keep my eye out for some mechanics or body painters wanting an enprenticship from either one of them Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/7388-lookin-for-mechanic-interested-in-takin-an-enprentice/#findComment-108905 Share on other sites
hitnrun
If you do a search - use the 3rd button from the right up top - for workshops or mechanics you should get a large list of places to call. You never know. Also try Nissan dealers they probably have more time than anyone, plus you may get to fang a new 350z (just dreaming mmm 350z) Also don't discount the Aussie delivered R31 skylines. They were a very good car that was extremely well built. Good fuel economy plus decent performance. Slip and a few others have R31's - there is quite a large following. Plus parts and insurance would be cheaper. Without being rude, unless you are used to powerful RWD cars, maybe look at 200sx, Silvia and 180's. I know that going from a worked Gemini and a swift GTi to a turbo skyline was a real big wake up call. I still have to give it heaps of respect. In the end it may take you more time to be able to specialise in Skylines, but these forums have almost all the info you could ever need - so working on it yourself shouldn't be a hassle. Guest TTZ32
Hi Chaos, this is constructive criticism, I've trained a few APPRENTICES and currently have two APPRENTICES and if a young kid walked into my workshop and asked for an enprenticeship, I would probably recommend they stay at school for a few more years, and concentrate on english:) However if your 110% motivated and commited then you shouldn't have any problems, but don't forget there are literally hundreds of school leavers looking for work this time of year, and first impressions are everything. Perhaps you could offer to do some unpaid after school or weekend work at the shop of your choice, and demonstrate your enthusiasm, and don't get offended if they hand you a broom and tell you to sweep the floor, we all have to start somewhere. Good luck, I hope you find something:) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/7388-lookin-for-mechanic-interested-in-takin-an-enprentice/#findComment-109118 Share on other sites
