hey guys,

I've noticed ever since i've had the car that the car seems to be really noisy. The engine has a pretty loud ticking sound and not only when it's cold. But one thing that i'm really worried about is that my gearbox seems awefully noisy. i can hear the some sort of whining when i'm in gear and also this whirring noise that is directly proportional to my speed. i could be in neutral and rolling down a hill and the whirring noise will be there. it sounds like my drive shaft is scraping across something. Can anyone help please! i hope i don't have something wrong with my gearbox or anything eeep!

"does the noise go away when you push in the clutch?

does the noise happen in all gears?

is the noise relational to speed or rpm?

does it happen in netutral?

what kind of car?"

no i can be rolling down a hill with the clutch in and the noise is still there. the noise happens in all gears. it happens in neutral. It's a r32 gtr.

nOOSE.

ps. the ticking isn't worrying me too much i assume it's the injectors but the noisy gearbox and metal on metal scraping noise does.!

What modifications have been done to the car? If its directly relational to speed not rpm, could be straight cut gears, could be worn gears and/or bearings.

Ticking noise is probably a combination of solid lifters and injectors... RB26's have noisy top ends :)

"so the pitch of the noise changes with speed and not rpm?

Where does it sound like it comes from? can you hear it inside and outside the car? can you feel any vibration from it?"

the scraping noise is directly proportional to the speed that the car is moving at not rpm. the noise sounds is coming from the center of teh car rite at the gearbox. someones the noise is really loud and sometimes the noise is soft so i have to listen to it but it's always there. the noise is most noticeable when in higher gears prolly coz in first and second the drone of the engine hides it. i have a short shift kit aswell and the gears are not happy going into first or second. have to give it a bit of force.

ps. I'm not sure if the gearbox has been modified but i'm not aware of any mods in the transmission. i can feel vibration on the gear stick when i let go of the gas mostly in third. but there is some vibration on the gearstick. i don't know if u can hear the noise from outside the car coz i have no one to listen to it :).

Don't worry about the 1st and 2nd shift, they all suck in that department.

I would almost second Amaru, straight cust gears with synchro by the sounds of things. If so, lucky bugger, you're set up for big HP. If it were a dog box, the shift would be noisy and a bitch to change gears in normal conditions.

Take the box off, have a gander...

    • Will have a look at that. I cant see any leaks
    • Put another overflow bottle (ie, a 1.25 coke bottle or similar) under the overflow hose and see if it is being pushed out there or if it is disappearing into the engine.
    • Staring on a stand is no issue. You just have to wire everything up, give it fuel and cross your fingers that the stand is robust enough. Arranging the inlet plumbing is often the hardest part, without any surrounding structure to hand some of it from. No need for coolant if you only want to run it for <1 minute. As to the gearbox - I think the little Aisin box is a bit stronger than the other small Nissan boxes that went behind SRs, but I wouldn't be too keen to test its limits with the torque of a boosted 25. I don't know if you can retain the box and the tailshaft. The box won't connect to the RB without an adapter of some sort, which is either a plate that will push the engine forward (which is not good for fitting it into the bay's available space) or push the box back, which messes with the box position and tailshaft length - OR - cut and shut work on the bellhousing, which is a long way from "least modification". I'd be buying a new 370Z 6 speed or similar, doing what has to be done to that to make it fit RB (ie, cut and shut bellhousing) and the requisite tailshaft custom/mods.
    • Hi Everyone I am from West Pennant Hills in NSW. Been too busy until recently to attend to my RB25DET Series 2 engine until recently. I am planning to stick it into the S15 shell at this stage, unless a nice SR20DET turns up... For now, i am going to try and get the RB25 running and working well then decide what gearbox to use. My preference is to retain the SR20DET  6 speed gearbox and tail shaft to retain as much and least modifications as i can avoid. I am an old guy and won't be doing any heavy drifting so i don't need a bullet proof gearbox Does anyone have experience with starting the RB on a stand? I got everything setup as much as I can with the info i can find... endless searching and videos on Youtube I would be great to get some pointers Cheers Songo
    • Hey all, Recently have had my s1 r33 gtr serviced and noticed my coolant reservoir was topped up to the max line. Took the car out for 1 yesterday and noticed today the reservoir is completely empty.  Any ideas? Radiator is full
