I think this question is pretty hard to answer! It depends what you are after.

If you put the money you save from buying a GTST instead of a GTR into a GTST you will have a very quick car. GTST's are pretty easy to modify and there are a lot of parts on the market for them now. So I have to say the maintenance costs will be pretty low.

A GTR on the other costs heaps to maintain and performance/standard parts a pretty pricy (Although recently prices have come down sufficiently). Even with the high costs associated with a GTR driving one is an absolute pleasure.

I have a couple of friends that have bought GTST's instead GTR's. One bought a R33 GTST and is building it for drag and the other opted for a R34GTT.

I know having said all this I'm going to cop a pasting from everyone. I personally believe that the decision depends solely on you. It all comes down to what you want and what your budget allows you to have.

It aslo comes down to what you think you can handle I think.

Rember the GTS-T is a street car that you can take to the track.

a GTR is a Race car that you can drive on the street.

Both have there pro's and con's. Personaly after owning a R33 GTS-T for 2 years. I am looking at geting a 32 GTR (in the future) as a weekend car and keep the GTS-T for daily duties.

Hey all, im in this similar delimea in deciding.

The way ive wayed it out is like this

Buying a GTST

Its cheaper to buy and the money ide save on buying a GTST insted of a GTR could be put back into the car to make it faster. BUT when i go to sell the car i wont get as much as i would for a GTR. Advantage - GTST is RWD, so stepping it out etc = :)

GTR - Allot more powerful, and move advanced options. When time comes to sell i will get allot more for it (importing it that is).

BUT my one question comes down to all the GTR drivers out there. Is it possible to step the back out in a GTR, or is it not the same as doing so in a GTST.

That is the one question thats keeping my up at night and tossing and turning in my sleep.

of course it can step out....dont forget its not a full time 4WD car. R32's its easy to remove the switch and have RWD mode only. Also if you have an HKS ETC, Grid Dancer, etc. you can also go RWD mode. Just remember, GTR's arent drift cars. You want a drift car, buy a 180sx or something similar thats cheap.

Diesel, something for you to bare in mind....can you afford it? By that, i dont just mean afford to buy the car itself. If you buy an R32 GTR be prepared for worst case scenario. Think about insurance aswell.

You didnt specify on which GTR or GTST you were after. R32 and R33 GTST have different motors.

For me, GTST was never an option. I chose a GTR....and my pockets are quite light because of it. But as Manage13 said, it is up to the individual. It all depends on what you want it for.

how is it more expensive on a gtr than a GTST?

an engine rebuild or performance modifications are not Maintenance.

yes they seem to be more on a GTR than GTST.

but to maintain a GTR can't cost more than a GTST.

if you disagree, please state why

all you light pocketed GTR owners should be able to comment here.

GTST, you have a point. It was a poor choice of words on my behalf.

It's just that when something goes wrong with a GTR it usually always means huge $$$$$. God help you if your car is already modified and you need to replace some parts.

But if you ask any owner of a GTR they will tell you that it's a money pit.

its quite simple, nissans goal for the GTR was coming up with a homolgated street vehicle that could be successfully raced with minor modifications. Which they did successfully for many years. I guess after the first few were produced, they realised there was a big demand for them for a street car, and continued to produce many more than would be required to just meet the criteria for the race cars.

The GTS-T was really just designed as a daily passenger vehicle, but they added a few performance bits to sit it in the middle for those that didn't need the "all out" of the GTR.. and probably couldn't afford one.

I think most would be saying that it is the parts on a GTR, and more complex system that is more expensive to fix if something goes wrong.. or just wears out over time.

THe only GTR specific repair I've had to do was have an ATTESSA leak fixed. Everything else (seals, plugs, pumps, rust, rotors) would be just the same as if I'd bought an 89 300ZX/GTSt I say.

That said, if I had an 89 GTSt I wouldn't be stressed about blowing up the engine. I've seen them for sale for $1200 and cheaper. You wouldn't bother rebuilding it, just buy a replacement :P

Having the GTR motor kark it is my biggest worry.

And in my opinion, mainenance is the replacement of consumables only.

If you want to modify your GTR it's dearer due to needing two airpods, two turbos, two dump pipes, etc. That said, I'm not about to replace the intercooler whereas a GTSt driver might want a front mounted IC, so it *kinda* evens out?

If you decide to go a GTS, go something different. Something like a four door.

As said there is no comparison between GTR & GTS. One is so far better that there's no measuring device available to compare them.

If I had the cash... GTR all the way!!

Yeh.. and the OTHER is a GTR..

hahahahaha..

As for the intercooler upgrade.... a whole kit that costs you $600 these days is most likely cheaper than the 2 split dump pipes you'd want to get for your GTR.

Just as most have stated, can you afford the upkeep of a GTR - I'm one of those who fall in the catagory of can but can't if that makes sense? In the first 12 months of having my GTR I have thrown about 6-7k into it that was not planned for or worked into my car budget effecting all other budgets and so on... I'm behind the eight ball because of this car. But would not even consider the purchase of either a GTR or GTST - GTR all the way!

GTR will suck you dry... (in terms of money)

my motor died the other day... im now spending 10 Grand i didnt think i was going to spend

they are fun to drive tho, i drift mine everynow and then and they get sideways very easiely and ant that hard to controll.

you can drift any car you want, not only silvias and gtst's

    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back. Progress pics to follow -  
    • Losses have to be less with DC coupling. Provided the battery inverter has decent MPP tracking ability - which really shouldn't be a problem. It's not 2005 any more.
    • Hi, Will the R33 GTR rear brake backing plates fit a GTST? I'm struggling to find GTST ones but can find new GTR ones.   Thanks.

    • Some more close up pics now that I’m back to working on the car, the loop pile is nice but again haven’t compared it to the other types in person, it’s hard to tell from the pics on the website. View of the hemming on the edges too, it comes in 2 pieces - front and back, honestly very happy with it for anyone on the fence.  Also attached my previous pics from further up as it didn’t let me post them directly before. (Nothing worse than photo bucket pics that aren’t hosted anymore years later)
