i drove it in a hire car!!!! a merc c200 sedan! lol!!! was soo dodgy!!! major body roll.. but the track itself.. unbelieveable!!! I'd have given anything to have had my sky there :P

also met an english guy with a r33 gtr... he ships it over from england every now and then.. sooo jealous!!!

BNR32 GTR was the first production road car to lap under 8 minutes mate.

That wasn't in production trim though, if I remember correctly. I believe the GT-R was running non-standard boost and full slicks when it posted that 7:59.

The Porsche 911 was the first car to break 8 minutes in a setup that you could pick up just off the showroom floor and drive to the Nordschleife.

I think a Nurburgring time is a good way to market a sports car. Because its such a long lap with a diverse mix of corners, and the road isn't in the best of conditions, assuming you've got drivers of a similar calibre it comes down to how easy the car is to drive.

Its one of those places where you need a semi-sports suspension and a good mid to top end power delivery. To be quick at the 'ring you should have to build a good all-rounder.

The suspension has to be stiffer than your average econobox to get good body control, but it can't be racecar stiff or it'll skip everywhere. There are some corners so tight that your revs will drop, or blind so you can't just throw the car in at the limit, and so you need something with a usable midrange as well as a strong top-end.

That sounds like the kind of setup your amateur / clubsport racer in their only car is going to want. Its not something tuned to the ragged edge that only a pro is going to be able to use, but at the same time its still going to be a better car than what your mum uses to get the groceries.

And because the Nurburgring is so long, its hard to just pull off a blinder. Its a lot easier fluke the 10 corners of Wakefield Park properly than it would be to string the 50+ corners of the 'ring together without making a mistake.

Since the corners increase and decrease radius, change camber, up and down hill, with a mixture of corner entry speeds, etc...its a much better way of determining a car that will corner well in all conditions, and make it easy on the driver. An easier car won't be as hard to drive, so you won't tire out and have lapses of concentration as much...nor will it punish you if you do make a mistake.

A single lap dash of most race tracks means very little. If you want to separate a well sorted quick car from a slow one, you'd have to do a full 10-15 minute session to see if the driver is still consistent at the end of it. See if the drive can still place the car exactly where they want on the racetrack, how much effort they had to expend to drive the car at their level, or if the car's run out of brakes or is overheating. On the 'ring, one lap would be enough. Maybe 2 if you want to torture test it.

I don't doubt that he could do an 8:00 lap in a Daewoo Matiz.  If I were a woman, I'd sure like to be his girlfriend...

I'd like Sabine Schmidt or Vicki Butler-Henderson to be my girlfriend.

Especially Vicki - love that accent, and her love of going sideways.....in a car.

The track is realy crazy and its realy fun...

but realy difficult...saw alot of the car from the list flying over the track

i love to drive there.... best think is japanese cars metting every year ...hope i can be there 2007

A friend and myself have been long time grand turismo players and have had almost every car in the game around Nur... And we get very consistant times, so yeah the track can be learnt... very realistic times too...

I know its just a game but I probably won't ever get there so the game will have to do I guess...

Driving the Nurburgring is on my 'life to do list'.

I'm going to europe for a holiday this time next year, and I will definitely be doing at least a lap of the famous circuit - Hire car here I come!!!!

Any tips for me? Where to hire car? How to get there? Accommodation?

hahahaha.. we hired a car from AVIS i think it was... a merc c200! lol! it did the job! didn't handle the best, but i still drop the nurburgring! was exhilirating!!!

there is also something called the BMW ring Taxi.. look it up.. they take you for zippy laps around there! we missed out, cause we were there in autumn/winter, and they close up shop :(

    • No, you're wrong, and you've always been wrong about this. The Nismo has 2 sets of openings. One is a real 2-way, and the other is a 1-way. There is no 1.5-way possible with the ramps that they offer. A real 1.5-way does exist. That Cusco stuff I posted is a prime example. If the forward drive ramps are, say 55°, and the overrun ramps are, say, 30°, then you will get about half as much LSD effect on overrun than you do on drive. It is real, it realy works. OK, you're slightly right. The Nismo has 55° and 45° ramps on the 2-way, so it does offer less LSD effect on overrun. But, I think that just means that they've (probably) sensibly established that you do not want actually equal LSD effect on overrun. You just want "quite a lot, but not quite as much as the drive LSD effect".

    • Yea, that is what I was getting at in my ramblings too. The nismo one actually is a 1.5 way and a 1 way. They don't do a *2* way because a true *2* way would have equal ramp angles. Or is that a true 1.5 way? Realistically I think a "1.5 way" does not actually exist. A diff can either lock in two directions or one. It also doesn't help that a LOT of people in Australia speak about 1.5 way diffs are referring to their 1 way diff.
    • Well, the trouble with that ^^ is: The configuration shown is absolutely a 1-way, not a 1.5-way. There is no way that a 1.5-way can be said to offer LSD action only on acceleration. If Nismo cannot get that right, then it is impossible to believe their documentation. That ^ is not a 1.5 way setup. That is a 1-way.   And so now I have allowed all doubts to flourish and have gone back to look at the MotoIQ video. I originally made the mistake of believing him when he said "this is a 1.5-way" at the ~6:10 mark. Because what he did was take the gear assembly out of the 2-way opening and just rotate it one place to the left to drop it into the 1-way opening. When he dropped it in there, the cam was "backwards" compared to the correct orientation shown in all other photos of that config. The flat shold have been facing the 1° ramp side of the opening, not the 55° ramp side. And I thought, "gee that's cute", but I was concerned at the time, when he put the other ring back on, that the gap between the rings looked like it was wider then in the 2-way config. And then I said a lot of things in my long post on Tuesday that could only make sense if the guy from MotoIQ was correct about what he'd done. BUT... I have now done my homework. I grabbed a frame of the video with the 2-way config, and then grabbed another with the "1.5-way" config, snipped out the cam and opening of that frame and just pasted it direct on top of the 2-way config. I scaled it so that the triangular opening was almost exactly the same height in both. AND.... the gap between the plates is wider with the cam installed in the triangualr opening backwards. That is.... it cannot go together that way. There would be massive force on the plates all the time, if you could even reassemble it.  So, My statement on the matter? The Nismo diff is actually only a 2-way and 1-way. There is no 1.5-way option in it, regardless of what they say. Here's a photo of a real 1.5-way ramp opening from Cusco (along with the 1 way option). And the full set of 1 through 2 way options from their racing diff, which is not same-same as what we'd typically be using, but...the cams work the same. A little blurry, but it comes from this Cusco doc, which is quite helpful. AND.... Cusco do in fact do what I suggested would be sensible, which is to have rings that do 1 and 1.5, and 1.5 and 2. Separately.
