I'm interested in buying a R33 GTR. Without touching the engine, what are the best mods to perform for increased horsepower?

I was thinking exhaust, boost and a Power FC. Sound ok?

Who makes a good exhaust system for the GTR?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

exactly what you said.....exhaust, 1 bar boost and power fc. make sure you get the power fc tuned by a good shop.

save your money and leave the standard dump pipes on unless you're going to change the turbos (costs about 600 bucks just in labour to change them). buy some good front pipes.....something that goes into 3.5" is your best bet and keep the same size all the way through.

that setup, depending on the tune, is good for 230awkw and low 12's.....might even break into the 11's if you run 1.2 bar but i'm not sure how long the std turbos will last.

i would loss the std turbos as they can come back and bite you later (by dropping and exhaust wheel and dusting the cylinders ie full rebuild)

the best bolts turbos in value for money

1/gt2560r 707160-5 $2500 new

2/HKS 2530 second hand or new

3/HKS gtss

there the most common 3 but you can get trust units aswell

stage 1

Apexi pfc and hand controller

Turbo upgrade

Exhaust minium 3"

pod filters

(mid 300's rwhp)

stage 2

Apexi pfc and hand controller

Turbo upgrade

Exhaust minium 3" with dump pipes

pod filters

afms (rb20/25 or z32)offen best to replace intake piping aswell

injectors 700cc

(low 400's rwhp)

stage 3

same as 2 with

tomei poncams

tomei adjustable cam wheels

(high 400's rwhp maybe 500 depending health of the motor)

I have done three gtr now to stage three of different configurations all were great cars to drive every day and still drive very much like a start gtr until you put your foot down. As for boost i wouldn't exceed 18psi on std motor as a rule of thumb.

Assuming you buy a GTR that is mechanically sound in the first place I would get these parts:

1. Full Exhaust System

2. Pod filters or ARC air box

3. Front mount intercooler

4. Boost controller

If you have more cash to spend,

5. Power FC

6. Maybe consider turbo upgrade however steel wheeling your standard turbo's is good too.

Also, take it to a good tuner!

3. front mount intercooler (wtf) they come std with a unit good for 450rwhp mines running 530rwhp on std cooler

4.boost controller nice to have but a bleed valve works quiet well

6.dont bother steel wheeling them rev03 lasted a month or so and had to fix them again (steel wheels could cost from 1500 to 2000) why both when brand new garrets are 2400 to 2500

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
