Ok ppls.

Here I have a RB20DET Wastegate actuator that holds boost to 11psi.

I also have a VG30BB Wastegate actuator that holds boost to around 6-7psi.

I have an EBC.

Would it be true to assume that the EBC will have better faster control over the lighter wastegate actuator?

Hence you will be able to possibly run a higher gain as the wastegate will act quicker?

What are your views ppls.

I'm going to slap it on and will post my results within the next few days.

nope.. They wouldn't refund.

They replaced it with another VG30 Turbo, it was either that or a credit note which I wasn't to happy about.

I've put this one on and standard boost (11psi) I can hear a slight screach that is really quiet. As soon as I set it for 12psi I get a really loud screaching noise.

It seems to almost go away a little if I flatten it.

If it turns out this one is stuffed, the next turbo I'm going to see if they will pay for it to get checked out before I put it on as this next turbo will be the third turbo.

Be buggered if i'm going to take the VG30 off again then put the RB20 back on AGAIN then swap the VG30 AGAIN then pull the rb20 off AGAIN then put the new vg on again. argg :) Oh well.

I feel that with this trouble I should be entitled to a refund.

What can I say.. I was told to steer clear of the VG30BB Turbo's.

I did a search and some one else has had the problem with their VG30BB starting to screach.

Just wondering what kinda boost you'll be running at the minimum?

I don't think a EBC can make the 11psi actuator open any earlier than 11 psi.

So if you're gonna run 8psi daily and on occasion go to 13psi (for example) then go the VG30BB one.

I stand to be corrected however, but I always thought EBC's can't open wastegates at lower boost levels than what the actuator is set at.

Thats right they can't but you get something that is called wastegate creep.

Say the wastegate actuator holds boost at 10psi.

At 5psi the wastegate is going to start opening which slows the boost spool

This is why EBC's are good as they stop the wastegate opening until the very last second that is possible as not to spike.

With a 10psi wastegate actuator it requires 10psi to open fully and at 5psi it is say half open.

So what I was getting at is a heavy spring(10psi) will cause the wastegate to be slower reacting where as a light spring will be quicker at reacting.

So if we set boost to 13psi. With a 10psi actuator we may have to start opening the wastegate with the EBC at around 10psi for the boost not to spike over the 13psi limit.

With a 6-7psi actuator we may be able keep the wastegate shut until around 11psi due to it opening quicker and easier with less boost.

Its probably doesn't make jack difference by the seat of the pants but IT MAY make a difference with a slow spooling turbo i.e my vg30bb turbo that makes 3psi by 2000rpm then 6psi by 3000rpm then by around 3800rpm it makes 12psi.

This may help increase the spool rate if in a gear that is to high and or going up a hill.

Just an Idea...

Anyway this dud vg30BB turbo that I have makes strange noises when boosting to 12psi and JMS have agreed to refund my money.

I'm not going to waste my time with another VG30BB turbo as I have heard and when done a search on a few forums found that others also have had problems with the BB variant of the VG30 Turbo.

I may look at highflowing the standard turbo which is around $1000. At least then I know it will be reliable.

I just need to get hold of a couple of specs that makes the RB20DET Turbo make decent power without to much lag.

Or I may get Tim who used to own RPM to get me a GT25 330hp turbo for $1500 make an adaptor plate and mod the dump.

DEpends.. WOuld the 330hp GT25 make around 200rwkw?? I'm thinking that maybe stretching its limits a little.

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
