I thought the RB26 rods were the same (but thicker) but the RB26 crank was what you needed to stroke it? Also need RB26 pistons with that but that doesn't matter.

Rb25 will do the job I'm after so although I'd like the RB30 I don't want the hassle and I'm short of cash for issues so I'm sticking to something fairly safe. Might get 250rwkw with a rebuilt RB25 and no other mods.

Wont be many other tiptronic R34's out there to compete with that.

Sounds good Bob.

Dropping the comp ratio with a set of cheap cast pistons?

250rwkw is a walk in the park with a decent comp ratio.

9:1 is too highly strung for our fuel really, it can be done with long term reliability but one has to be carefull.

since no one reply in my thread ill post it here :O

i think i got a similar problem to adams but my catch can is full atmo. I did the compression test and it seems all fine... the readings were ranging from 150 to 160. So what else could be the problem?...btw i noticed water in my overfilled catch can (milky colour) thats bad!..emptied it...but i know my catch can will fill up quickly again...any ideas?

If there is water in your catch can it would have to be a head gasket right...

anyone :P

If the catch can can just fills with water , you will find the oiul in the engine would be milky too . If thats the case it could be a leaking headgasket and or cracked head/block , h/gasket the most likely .

If your catch can fills with oil as well then the bottom end , rings most probably are worn .

I checked the oil cap after driving it...and NO milky look on the cap

YEh the catch can is filled with oil and water.... i noticed that around my bottom block...theres oil ...im not sure where its leaking from...i guess the head gasket

By the sound of it the oil leak is the least of your problem .

Its normal to get some condensation in the oil catch can, but if it fills up with normal street driving your engine is not healthy . Empty it out and see how long it takes to fill up , how much does it hold ? how much water in it ? How much oil does the engine use ? is it fairly stock ? how much boost ? Stock pistons or forged ?

Adam ,

If you deside to pull your engine out and rebuilt it yourself let me know , as i have machine shop contacts to get the bore out , crank and cil head done .

All the above around $500 , if you want prices p.m. and i'll find out for you .

YEh you could say it fills upwith normal street driving. I emptied it like 3 days ago, so ill see how fast it will fill up...Its a Greddy look alike...the square rectangal one. there was abit of watr in it. I got a oil cooler and relocation kit for it...soo almost 5L of oil. Its not stock, Internal wise it is....its running a gt30 with external gate., Boost im running stock. Anymore info that may be helpful for a solution?

How much oil does the catch can hold ? not the engine . I'm trying to determine how much oil goes in the catch can and how long it takes to fill up ( as in how many k's ) . How much oil does your engine use ? as in how long before you have to top it up ?if it uses say 1 lt or more per 1000 k's , the only solution i can think of is a rebuild !! If your engine is anywhere near healthy and you run stock boost you should never have to empty the catch can . You will get very little oil in there if engine is still good .

If you want to know for sure a leak-down and compression test will show the condition of your engine ...

Yeh i said it was a GREDDY LOOK ALIKE CATCH CAN....soo it doesnt hold as much....say 600ml

i have done the compression test and all cyclinders were ranging from 150 to 160.

Is there any diff from a leak down test?...i was told it was the same...

Not the same at all , you can have good compression and worn piston rings too. 150-160 a bit on the low side , when did you do the comp test ? after you realised the catch can filling up or before ?

i did the comp test after i noticed it was filling. I was more concerned when my car blew white smoke for a while...but i think that was due to the catch can being overfilled..

So can a leak down test find out that a comp cant?

    • You know how your car rolled through a fence in your last jacking escapade? Scissor jacks increase the likely hood of that sort of thing happening immensely!

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
