Has anyone run dual exhaust on their cars at all? I am looking into running dual 60mm or 65mm exhaust due to my 80mm setup is scraping quite a bit due to my ride height.

Since the effective area is vital I can't just do two 40mm pipes to equal one 80mm pipe (2*40mm = 2513mm^2 vs 1*80mm = 5026mm^2), so two 60mm or 65mm pipes should work... just thought I'd point that out if anyone asked why so big for two... easily overlooked.

So what I was thinking is run one 80mm dump down to a Y-pipe that split into 2 60 or 65mm pipes all the way back... either exiting with two or converging back to one around the diff since it doesn't hit the ground due to the wheel.

Any experiences or ideas?

Another idea is to run oval... but it might be hard to find some pipe let alone a muffler.

Dual is definitely quieter than the equiv single.

Bl4ck32's is amazingly quiet, still loud but not rude sounding and absolutely zero drone.

Dual = quiet. Another reason APS use it in their xr6 system.

Very interesting everyone... does anyone have any sound files? My RS*R 3" kit is stupid loud the way it is... sounds good but it'll take the fillings in your teeth out if you have any. Sounds like I'm definitely going dual ...

Here's how mine sounds now... RS*R 3"

Its well known amongst the v8 heads a twin 2.5" is quieter than a single 3.5" with the same high quality straight through mufflers.

sorry should have qualified that one -

i agree that a twin system with the same size mufflers will be less resonant and quieter, but a 3" aussie built system with decent sized mufflers can still keep the noise down, vs a twin system with smaller mufflers (or only rear 'mufflers' in ylwgtr2's case)

:O

Ronin09,

Exactly.. A 3" system. :O

3.5" systems are louder, noticably louder.

A 2 x 2.5" system is on par with a 3.5"-4" with regards to flow.

Thats what should be compared.

Bl4ck32's twin system has small mufflers on the rear, there is no droning and is only slightly louder than my 3" with a larger rear muffler and large center resonator.

I've heard a few 3.5" exhausts and to be honest they sound a little rude loud. I've now seen 2 twins on an rb30det and Tim Possinghams old RB25DET R33. Both looked to be the same exhaust, with regards to rear muffler size.

The Twin was not as rude loud.

That being said both of these twins have been on a single turbo, its quite possible twins on the gtr's twin turbo's react different.

Thats a point I missed. :O

In all seriousness though, the size of your mufflers, I expected the car to be so damn loud it wasn't funny.

Its quieter than a dude around the corner that has a 2.0"-2.5" exhaust and a cannon on his NA Corolla. :)

well I'm getting a full twin system shortly....

63mm thin walled stainless, straight from each of the TRUST extended dumps.

it should make a little more power and also sound fantastic..

If anyone has sound files of duals... I'd love to hear them... however, ground clearance is point #1 for me since my Kei Office puts things really close to the ground. Not much could be louder than my 3" RS*R with no resonator and no cat so anything on dB limiting will be an improvement.

Yes its quieter now with its straight-through system, than with the old single 3" exhaust with the cat.

Oosh- ill try to get pics, but i aint got a camera :P

That'd be good but don't sweat it. :D

    • No, code 21 is very straightforward. It can only be the things described in that diagnostic flow. In fact it has no way of knowing that the spark plug resistance is out of spec.
    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go
