Hi all,

I've just installed a boost tap for my R33 GTST and winded it up to 13 psi. Took it out for a test.

- 1st gear was extremely powerful, 2nd gear was normal (couldnt feel the pull), 3rd gear was also more powerful than before. However, intercooler pipe was loose at one of the joints and the engine stalled...(The turbo was glowing redhot when i opened the bonnet). Took it back to the garage and tighten up the pipes properly.

After 2 weeks, I started to feel a huge lag on 3rd and 4th gear, and couldnt feel any more power on the 1st nor 2nd gear even thouggh I can still feel/hear the engine and turbo work very well (Boost gauge still shows 13psi). My friend said my clutch has worn out (it doesnt go as it sounds).

I'm just wondering if anyone here has experienced the same problem before or has any idea what exactly is the problem?

Any help would be appreciated...Thanks in advance

Ken

P.S My line basically has full exhaust system, pod, and intercooler.

Is the car blowing any smoke?? if not you might have a leak in your IC plumming again... while the car is on idle open the bonet and listen for any 'hissing'... if ur clutch is gone it will slip its nut off and smell like shit.. you will deffinatly notice it! let us know wat happens

good luck

If the clutch was slipping, you should be able to smell it.  Would be pretty noticeable.

mmmm..........not necessarily Racer...mine slips a little, enough to kill that rush when changing gears at boost!!

After checking for IC pipe leaks, as smartly suggested above, I'd re-set the ECU, give that a try......check your plug gaps (.8mm) too (?)

I know i'm going away from the clutch thing, but reduce your boost by a psi, at least!!!

13psi is bordering on a fun short time, without re-mapping!!

Hi guys,

I've gone through the checklist given by you geniuses. Below is a summary of the result

Is the car blowing any smoke? No. In fact, I cant smell anything like the clutch is burning

Leaking in the IC plumming? No "hissing" was noticed

I havent checked for plug gaps cuz I dunno how to :D

Finally, I winded the turbo back to 10psi and reset the ECU and it's running smoother with much better response (VERY HAPPY :()

Yes, I'm running a factory ECU. Is that why my car couldnt run at 13psi properly? Would remapping the ECU or changing to an aftermarket one (PowerFC) help?

Other than that, Thanks so much for your help guys! I'm pretty happy with my line now :)

THERE YOU GO! Factory ECU is ace, for relatively standard applications..ie, maybe 10 -11 psi. (in a nutshell!!)

Unless your car is noticeably misssing upon acceleration, then don't worry about spark plugs. (checked by removing them and measuring the 'gap'!!).

I'm being a little conservative with this, as I believe you are being!! Cool!!

    • My thought is if you were just moving it forward and the upstream geometry remained the same, then no difference at all. But because the current one has the filter direct into the AFM inlet, you effectively have the best chance of a completely symmetric air flow profile upstream, and in, the AFM, whilst the aftermarket inlet thingo has a (small, to be sure) bend between the filter and the AFM. That would bias the flow to the outside of the bend (downstream of the bend) which might well reduce the size of the signal seen by the AFM, for the same total flow rate. Having said that: If you're proposing to make your inlet look like a hybrid of your existing one and the aftermarket one, such that there is no bend where the filter is clamped on... then I say it will be just fine. If there is going to be such a bend, then, if you can align the insertion of the AFM blade such that it is at right angles to the plane of the bend, then there is a better than even chance that the centreline velocity where the blade is will remain more or less the same, and the velocity will just be a little faster to the outside of that, and just a little slower to the inside. **This is not professional investment advice and you should consult a suitably qualified ouija board, tea leaves or the intestines of a goat for more accurate prognostication.
    • Hi Tao, Thanks for your reply.  It's been a while and I managed to get the valve stem seals replaced with the head on the car.  Unfortunately this didn't solve my issue, the car still smokes a lot after idling (to be honest during idle you can see a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust), same after deceleration. I will try disconnecting the valve cover breathers, do I leave the PCV valve in? By engine oil drain pipe, do you mean the turbo oil drain?
    • What about if you just give it direct 12v and earth?
    • Hi guys . Can someone help me  I bought an Android screen for my Nissan fuga but it won't turn on
    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
