Hey Guys,

Me and my mates have a little bit of trouble understanding this.

If you are in 4th Gear doing about 50km....your revs are at about 2k right?

Why is it, that when you plant your foot on the accelerator...boost comes on straight away....

I mean the car doesnt move..but there is a boost reading of 7 psi with a stock R33.

Just wanting to know the EXACT reason why this happens....

Thanks

Stel

There is more load (resistance) on an engine in 4th gear than in the lower gears. The more load an engine has, the more exhaust it produces. The more exhaust it produces, the faster it spins the turbine. The faster the turbine spins, the more airflow the compressor produces. The more airflow the compressor produces the higher the boost potential

Remember that boost is simply a measure of resistance to airflow, not a measure of the airflow itself.

:D cheers :)

in an R33 full boost comes on by about 2,500/3,000rpm..

this is to do with the volume of air and the load that is going through the engine.. the higher the volume the quicker it will spool the engine up..

for a turbo to get going the engine has to have a fair bit of load on it so that the air will spin the turbo up to a high enough RPM to create boost which isn't till about 20,000rpm..

this is why in 1st gear you won't tend to make much boost as the volume + load isn't for a long enough duration to really spool it up till higher in the rev range..

by putting a higher load on the engine the car will dump more air + more fuel to get it going.. this air is what spins the turbo as it comes out - higher flow of air will spool it up quicker..

hope that helps.. probably not the best description..

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
