I found a good cheap boost controller for $22!!!
jmac replied to CEF11E's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Hey all, Just wanted to say, I emailed Mark on 4/10, he got back to me on 5/10, I transferred the $$ on 5/10 and got the controller today 13/10. This includes a weekend so realistically I received what I paid for within 4-5 days of the funds clearing. FYI I took some photos of the valve installed on my R34 GT-T. My mechanic helped me do this and I'm *very* happy. Initially it drove pretty much as standard (I don't have a standard turbo though, but computer + fuel system is stock), then wound it in... ummm a bit too far and Mark is not kidding, you only need to go one quarter of a turn at a time. Let's just say I know what boost cut feels like. So overall it's now set about 2/3 a turn in (i.e. more boost) from how it was sent to me and the car is hitting 13-14 PSI then easing back to about 12-13 PSI towards redline. Haven't noticed any significant spike other than maybe 1 PSI when boost initially kicks in, certainly not a drama. No detonation and the engine doesn't feel like it's leaning out. A PowerFC and dyno run will confirm this... For the install we pissed off the piece of piping with the restrictor in it (running from the inlet side) and the entire "3-way" setup. Used fairly long lengths of new tubing so the valve can be hidden under the intake pod - will tidy this up later. See the pics for what I mean. Took about 10 mins tops, then about 5 test drives around the block to adjust boost (run in 3rd gear). Overall: happy customer. -
Hey bwilkeson, that turbo is definitely off an R34 GT-T (RB25DET Neo), i.e. mine! I have nothing to indicate it wasn't the stock turbo. (Not that I have it stock any more!!! woohoo) Cheers!

Hey all, Kit arrived today, no dramas - thanks for Sydneykid for being so helpful and answering all my dumbass questions. Will let everyone know how I go getting this fitted and how it compares to my coilovers. Cheers!

Fitting Whiteline Kit, Is $700 Expensive?
jmac replied to jmac's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Heh ok, thanks guys. This is what I suspected. I guess I can name names: I was speaking to Fulcrum. I don't mean to criticise them on here, was just finding out a ballpark figure. The guy I spoke too was VERY polite and helpful so I have no issues with that... I might go and have a chat and let him know that if he can do me a better deal it will be mentioned online, seems a few people in Brisbane are searching for a good place for suspension. Cheers -
Ordered one of Sydneykid's Whiteline kits for the GT-T, called one of the major suspension places in Brisbane today (not Pedders!) and asked for a quote on the following, given I will be supplying them with the parts: 1. Remove existing coilover setup (HKS) 2. Fit Whiteline kit - dampers, springs, caster kit, rear subframe kit 3. Fit HICAS lock bar 4. Full alignment I was quoted ~$700, including labour, he said they'd have the car for a day or maybe a little more. Does this sound expensive to you guys? I can probably get my usual mechanic to fit the bits but it might take longer than a day, plus I want to go somewhere that does this stuff all day for the alignment. Cheers!

some pics if they help. AFAIK this is a stock R34 GT-T turbo. cheers

they are still for sale, $35 delivered for SAU'ers. sent an email last night and got a reply today. -
Has anyone put one of these bars on an R34 GT-T? Any problems with steering getting heavy at low speeds etc? I wasn't aware the R34's had the variable power assistance, so were there any problems once you: 1. fit the bar 2. rip out HICAS globe from dashboard ??? Thanks

Ok these links might help a little, download the PDF booklet and check it out. http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/LTASinf...s_modifications Also a link to what the ADRs do - to actually GET the rules themselves you have to buy the CDROM by the looks, unless anyone has had more luck with their Googling. http://www.dotrs.gov.au/transreg/str_adrindx.aspx To answer the exhaust question: Exhaust systems Exhaust systems must comply with Queensland legislation which includes the following conditions: • Exhaust headers (extractors) may be fitted to any motor vehicle, provided: they do not foul any part of the steering, suspension, brake or fuel systems all fittings for emission control equipment (E.G.R. valve, oxygen sensor, pipes and so on) are incorporated to ensure the vehicle maintains compliance with Australian Design Rules for vehicle emissions exhaust systems must continue to comply with relevant legislation or Australian Design Rules for vehicle noise. • The exhaust outlet must extend at least 40mm beyond the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floor pan that is not continuously welded or permanently sealed which could permit direct access of exhaust gases to the passenger compartment, but not beyond the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan. • The exhaust outlet, if to the side of the vehicle, must discharge to the right hand side of the vehicle and downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than 15 degrees and not more than 45 degrees. • The exhaust outlet, if to the rear of the vehicle, must discharge at not more than 10 degrees above or 45 degrees below the horizontal. • All exhaust and muffler systems must be free of any leaks or mechanical faults and should be adequately supported.

Hey SK, (PM also sent) Questions... 1. Front camber adjustment - can this be achieved with the factory adjustments? 2. Rear subframe adjustment kit - is this mainly for drift/drag applications or needed for road use also? 3. Any workshop in Brisbane you'd recommend? Thanks heaps!!

R34 Gtt Hi-flow Front/dump Pipe Issues (with Pics)
jmac posted a topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Hi everyone, Any help again much appreciated. I'm going with the advice I received here recently and going down the high-flow route. Turbo came off the car tonight, please see pics. Current spec: R34 GT-T manual Intake - K&N-style pod thing Turbo - stock, getting high-flowed next day or so (keeping stock housings) Dump pipe - looks stock Front pipe - Nismo "20020-RNR40" with a narrower section at the start Cat - ?stock Cat-back - 3" Blitz Nur Spec Everything else - stock. So as you can see my problem is still having a stock dump pipe and a narrower section at the top end of my front pipe (is this an issue?). Question is, what are my options? Obviously need to go for a larger dump pipe and work my way around the front pipe issue if I have to as well. I've searched the stickys at the top of the forum and the only suggestion seemed to be a custom option. Any specific brands/models, or is custom the way to go? Plus, anyone in Brisbane (preferably Southside) who knows what they're talking about and you'd trust to be able to supply me with said bits this week? Sorry for all the questions but if I can go in armed with knowledge from here plus what my mechanic tells me then I feel much better about the situation. Any comments much appreciated! Cheers! -
turns out it wasn't touching the globes but just switching to a diff brand (narva) that did the trick. now i get a few months out of them.... still should last longer but... *shrug*

hey reflex, how much did the gear set you back (if you don't mind me asking). PM if you like... thanks
-
Wow, thanks guys (ALL of you) for your responses. R31Nismoid I hear what you're saying but I've read a lot of the older threads and there were so many different philosophies out there (do exhaust first, do computer first, keep stock turbo or upgrade it) that I figured it wasn't too far out of line to just ask "What would you guys do if you were me?". The car is a manual, by the way. All the gear on it came with it when I bought it. Bass, I have no idea re. the front pipe issue. I would assume there's something there, but then I've learnt to not assume too much... Looks like my shopping list so far is: 1. repair stock turbo leak 2. front pipe if needed + high-flow cat 3. PowerFC 4. electronic boost controller but keep max <12 PSI 5. FMIC 6. iridium plugs It's all making sense now - only need to upgrade fuelling side if I upgrade the turbo and start winding up the boost.... Must admit I'm a little concerned about the ceramic turbo innards crapping themselves even at 0.8 bar. If anyone else has their $0.02 to add please feel free! I'll be sure and post results and will actually have to meet up with some of you Brisbane people sometime!

Anyone who can make even a quick suggestion is welcome: Got an R34 GTT, and it sounds like it has an exhaust leak somewhere down near the turbo. So, while I'm getting it fixed my logic is why not spend some $$$ on hardware and wake my Neo up a little bit? Current stuff: Pod filter (K&N?) Blitz Nur-spec 3" exhaust Nismo dump pipe Turbo, computer, intercooler etc. all stock My budget is $5000 max and the goal is a reliable, responsive, fairly lag-free engine - it's a daily driver and pulling 500km a week minimum. 200+ rwkW would be nice, and I don't want problems if the cops pull me over. Yes I've searched, I've read, I've spoken to various mechanics. Here's what I was thinking: Replacement turbo - no idea what type/model Front-mount intercooler - some ppl say keep the stock one for better response? Computer - PowerFC? Unichip? Boost controller BOV???? Z32 airflow sensor Injectors/fuel pump That's probably about as far as I'll go. Knowing what you guys know, what would you do? Any comments much appreciated.

Cruise control in a manual Skyline
jmac replied to jmac's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
in city driving, mostly not, but the run i do to work (>1 hr/day) is through lots of boring 70-80-90 km/h zones, fairly light traffic and straight roads notorious for having white vans parked behind bus shelters and blokes hiding behind trees pointing hairdryers at you. $300 is only 2 decent speeding fines... but your point is duly noted. -
Cruise control in a manual Skyline
jmac replied to jmac's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
sweet - if you come up with any clues re the brand please let me know! anyone else? is this just a case of walking in to autobarn and saying "duhhh take my moneys"? -
Has anyone put an aftermarket cruise control system into their manual Skyline? I cover a lot of k's for work in an R34 and cruise would be fantastic. Just wondering if anyone's done it, or at least heard of kits that work well. Thanks........
