I'm positive there is an FAQ about this floating around somewhere.... i had a quick look but couldn't find it. If I remember, I'll have another look for it later and see if i can find it. I'm sure i remember seeing it around somewhere when we were moving heaps of threads around with the new forum lay out. It appears to be a breather... to let air flow around in the boot so that any petrol fumes etc can escape.

Its not likely to be the alternator. Charge the battery up and go for a drive. While you're driving along, check at what voltage the battery is charging at.
