  1. They are as fast as gtst for similar money spent and it's still 2wd. GTR's are known to dip into 11's on the factory turbos , driven correctly on normal road tyres. Doing this in the supra dictates the use of drag radials. Putting the 1/4mile thing aside. The real test: * I recomend you go drive a good example of both. I doubt you will be singing the praises of the Supra afterwards but, if you like it more then thats what life is all about. We don't like to be clones.
  2. The supra isn't remotely comparable to a GTR. Stock for stock it's slower everywhere. I'd compare a supra to a gtst. It also handles like a boat. Drive both one after the other and you will find yourself thinking very little of the supra.
  3. The fully counterweighted HKS kit is a very good setup for someone wanting to get into some big rpm and power (Ant). However if you are going to be running those relatively small 260 cams and 2860 turbos and really want the best mid range experience then the Rb30 is going to give you more by virtue of its additional capacity. It will punch out all the flow those turbos can muster before you are in any kind of crazy rpm, where the HKS kit really shines in an Rb26.
  4. The RB30's rod ratio means it's actually better suited to high rpm, it's stock single cam head is the reving issue. Bolt the Rb26 head to it and it likes revs. I seem to recall Sydneykids 26/30's going to 9,500rpm quite happily. The RB30 can make the same power with less rpm, and place less stress on the up and down bits at the same rpm. Just again for the record; There is NO extra bracing in an Rb26 block. I have had an RB30 / 25 /26 block at one stage at the same time, and you really would struggle to suggest anything different in that department. Happy to stand corrected but, in practice I think its horse %$^# but, thats what seems to sell Import mags these days.
  5. You are certainly right about considering beefing up other things not just the engine. In terms of the good old stocker gearbox, I reckon there is a fair bit of blame going on the owners and the way they choose to drive. I've seen pretty stock GTR motors kill 3rd gear in the hands of the brutal, the 3 litres may make being a bastard to your gearbox easier but, you don't have to be a bastard. The power and torque can be tuned basically by your right foot, it's a long forgotten art, as you load up the weaker 3rd gear. You can also put a cap on your power curve to limit carnage when you tune, till you save for the beefy gearset. It's the old story of people who 'must' have every last kw of potential out of thier motor for the sake of it.
  6. Hi Rob, I'm in the process of building an Rb30 bottom end for my bunky gtr. I started going down this path some years ago for pretty much the same reasons you are now looking at it. Really the Rb30 setup gives you a fantastic rod ratio as well as more capacity, so if you build it right you can have a fair whack of an rpm range as well as capacity. I'm dobbing Sydneykid in for some very good guidance on doing a decent 26/30 build ( PM box will fill shortly --- sorry mate). Cheers Dave
  7. Sorry mate, I think you have had your eyes shut for the last 30 years, thats approximately how long 2 valve V8's have been making that sort of hp/cube ratio. I know it can sometimes be an unpleasant truth to admit to tho'
  8. For the record the Rb30 block is every bit as strong as the RB26, it doesn't lack internal bracing. Take some time to read up on this forum about this combination and how good it is, you will be plesantly suprised.
  9. The standard internal RB26 is a ticking time bomb with 600hp without attention to things like the oiling system, namely the oil surge issue, they ideally need at least oil restrictors fitted. But, that would just be the start of a 600hp motor build that would hang together for a while. The N1's bottom end need attention to the restrictors as well, they don't factory fit them. The N1 oil pump fitted to the standard or N1 block logically makes more oil go straight to the head to slosh about up there, potentially starving the bottom end on a hard corner.
  10. The cheap ass intercoolers aren't a match for the better unit's like the Trust made ones. The end tanks are usually crap for a start. you get a cheap intercooler when you can't afford a trust/ARC or local ARE made one, don't kid yourself that the cheap intercoolers are as good. They aren't. The gap in performance is still there even though it's narrowed a little over time.
  11. the power fc works independent of the boost controler. so yes.
  12. You can end up spending alot more than you would buying a real GTR as something worth keeping in mind. If you want something fairly mild then; * Exhaust is a good place to start (turbo back). * Aftermarket ecu, sort timing and fuel out prefferably or S-AFC. * Clutch and Flywheel upgrade will be needed once power is up , a lightweight flywheel while your at it. * You will need fuel pump and injectors once you step into an upgraded turbo Lots of things you can do really but, depends on what you would like the car to be. If you want lots of power in the long term, just save for a built RB26 it more or less drops straight in with very few bits to get. The GTS4 gearbox is the same strength wise too, it's not the poxy RB20 box out of gtst's. For the record the K&N panel filters are fine and re-usable, sorry 13thracer I've used exactly the same panel filter on a high powered GTR (among other cars) with more power than the lowly RB20 is ever going to produce. People only have issues with them when they don't read instructions and over oil them.
  13. As someone who quite likes the ford motors, with friends who have been building them for most of thier lives I'd like to add; Like most engines the 'modular' (read mass production cheap'o - just look at the cheap manifold issues) 4.6 needs a large wad of cash, work and bits thrown at it to make 1000hp, without being a ticking time bomb. Bone stock isn't a term I'd be using to describe anything but a hand grenade at 1,000hp. The main web and bulkheads are going to be cracked quite nicely in due time (this is a common place of failure with these blocks). Those factory blocks aren't what I'd be starting with for lots of power. I guarentee those guys with the big turbo kits (seems to be very few of them) are capwalking away their bottom end bearings life as we speak. There is no magic brand or type of block that makes 1,000hp cheaply in a small cubic capacity. Thats the rule. I'm not saying the 4.6 and its cousins 5.4 etc are terrible motors but, actually the Toyota engine is a far better peice of engineering, and although it kills me to say it the LS series alloy blocks are far better strength wise.

    R32 Vs R35

How did you understand it was on Competition tyres? Actually suggestions of increased boost are really baseless as well, we can't really confirm or deny it (suggesting it was increased is based purely on the belief that it was for no other reason?). There is also no roll cage in the car (that you can see). I think perhaps you are looking for possible reasons to invalidate the sub 8 min claim but, so far we are getting internet speculation, doesn't stand up especially when there is no evidence. I mean I can understand if the argument is that Nissan are lie tellers and the other brands aren't, that I can accept and we can agree to disagree. Now back to topic...

    R32 Vs R35

Nissan claim the sub 8min officially, it was accepted at the time regardless of what we want to debate now. Speed limiter wasn't included in the R33 GTR according to the country it got sold in (the Aussie R32s did not have it). It's not on slicks in that run either, boost is up for debate however it's not going to be more than the ceramic turbines can handle.
  16. Like most engines the modular 4.6 needs a large wad of cash, work and bits thrown at it to make 1000hp. Bone stock isn't a term I'd be using to describe anything but a hand grenade at 1,000hp. If the thing hung together for longer than a week then I expect the main web and bulkheads are going to be cracked quite nicely in due time. Those factory blocks aren't what I'd be starting with for lots of power. There is no magic brand or type of block that makes 1,000hp cheaply in a small cubic capacity. Thats the rule. The blocks best suited to it are race blocks, usually billet if we are talking 1,000+ hp.
  17. Although I hate this car..... I'd say selecting a slower car means you are growing man cans. "I'm sacared of going faster...boo hoo." The gearbox, issue; 1) If we can agree that Slow = Gay 2) Manual gearbox is slower than DSG. 3) Manual gearbox = the new slow = Gay The weight issue ( 'oh no my super model friends will all think I'm fat...") 4) Best factory GTR 1/4 mile time = 12.9 5) New factory GTR 1/4 mile time = 11.7 6) Old GTR's 1/4mile time now = Slow 6) In the small world of factory stock GTR's , old GTR's now = Gay.
  18. It's interior looks nice. A change from the past GTR's that have a 'cheap' look,
  19. You can, it's not an issue. You can even run wider tyres as long as the rolling diameter is the same. Bigger on the rear but with a lower series profile is fine. PMs sent.
  20. I hate it! After monaroCountry spoke all I could see was it's non-chev-V8-ness and from then on it made me sick.
  21. Absolutely. Only it's going to be one of those very long builds, it's slowly getting there at the moment.

    R32 Vs R35

It was actually confirmed officially by nissan at the time. It's really only rumours recently (due to revised talk about skylines all over the net) disputing this fact doing the rounds that it wasn't officially confirmed. I remember seeing it again recently on some sort of official Nissan literature and it's on the Nissan GTR launch website as well.
  23. Yep its a CON! All Jap cars are mate. Pass another VB. > Doesn't even have a V8 in it mate! Who are they kidding? My commodore SV6 towing a boat is faster. By the way I reckon the new commodore would flog it, and the build quality is crap. Whatever you do don't buy this car, we don't want this import crap in our fine country! Good thing you know your way around Germany and it's fine race tracks so well, why I remember you telling us all how you spent a summer there repairing pot holes....... monaroCountry, your comments are not only important ( I think I speak on behalf of all the 'skyline' forum on this one) they are truely 'the new gospel' for the lost jap import owner. We salute you! I am releasing a new limited edition pack of monaroCountry's complete trilogy of 'all' his started topics on SAU, where he looks closely at a huge range of interesting vehicles powered by a diverse range of engine types, including; The fasinating ...
