Nah the WRX 'Evos' were a Subaru Australia thing to boost interest in slow sales... you know, like Toyota Starlet 'Life' etc. Subaru Japan probably didn't have any knowledge of it, nor cared about it either.

I wouldn't wholesale trust that an 'Evolution' model GT-R is on the cards just yet. The only repeated mention of specific models of the new GT-R I've seen is the base model, M-Spec (leather version) and V-Spec. Not saying it won't happen, just haven't seen any mention of it amongst Japanese circles other than that article J-Spec put on it's site ages ago about the next 'Skyline GT-R Evolution'.

Thats it right there. I used to think there was a conspiracy at play with the Aussie government and Holden, basically pricing out any competitors to the sub-$40K RWD sedan segment from Japan. But now in hindsight I know thats pretty lame, especially since Toyota (and more or less Mitsubishi but they don't have any RWDs) make cars in Australia and that would mean limiting jobs etc. So whats the problem then? Price. Theres no way Toyota can tool up their AU plant to build the RWD Mark X in a similar spec to compete with Holden/Ford at their price level. The investment would be huge, so it just will not happen. The only way is to import, then it's up to Toyotas overseas plants to spec the car to a price competitive standard, which in itself would either be too expesive for the Holden/Ford market segment with it's native Japanese spec level (almost Lexus spec, which would come in at $45K+), or spec'd so low to keep it in Commodore Omega/Falcon XT price territory that it'd have vynil seats, no aircon, and only available in Taxi-pack white... which of course Toyota would never let happen. Ditto for Nissan Skyline/Fuga...

I wasn't 'competitively comparing' them to a GT-R. Where did you get that from? I was talking about the cars that Nissan doesn't import here for one reason or another... and it's not just one or two... so going by recent history and the relative limp wristedness of Nissan AU theres a pretty good chance the GT-R won't make it either. You can't ignore that.

Is it also a no brainer why the Skyline, Fuga, Stagea, Cima and President aren't sold in Australia? That alone makes me wonder if the GT-R will get a look in...

Thats fine and all, but they're still speculating on the price here in Japan (ie: nothing official has been said) so how could your guy at Nissan even know if the car is coming to AU, let alone the price? He's just guessing like everyone else.

El Camino? Thats what I'm talking about In the US you've got so many more cars which appeal to the mainstream. While we in AU can get Mustangs, Vipers etc via low volume import, I can't say anyone would go to the trouble of preparing one for drift competition... I may be wrong though! Alot of guys seem to put Chevy badges on their Commodores/Monaros (even though the latter is badged as a Pontiac in the US) so the support fot the 'parent company' is there, but I can't say many people would prefer to see a Viper or Mustang win a Drift Australia round over a Commodore or Falcon. I remember the first time I saw that Falken sponsored Mustang drift car and though "the V8 crowd in Australia would pay to see that drift". But I've mentioned it twice already, the drift purists who are diehard supporters of traditional drift in Japan would probably commit suicide before selling out and letting the V8 'cavemen' take over and run the show...

As good as the next GT-R will be, it's a very different car now compared to the 34,33,32... you can say the same about the BNR32 being a very different car from it's father the KPGC110. But they all had that uniqueness and iconic status you're talking about at the time they were around. So what if a whole generation of pimple faced kids now lust after the GT-R yet don't know what it is. If anything that'll encourage Nissan not to drop the model in the future as these kids grow up and start earning money. You are speculating here though GTS4WD, just wait till next year when the thing actually goes on sale.

Whats not many Skylines in America got to do with their claim of 'most extesively modified GT-R in the world'? Even an internet savvy 12 year old would know that was false. I've since checked other stuff on that website and the writer is from the Philipines... I take back what I said about Americans. But anyway... show us some of these Pakistani GT-Rs

Oh I just love it how Americans throw that phrase around like it's part and parcel with being in the USA. While it's definately an awesome 34GT-R, they obviously don't know about the Amuse Carbon R, Autech Tsukada R32 GT-R, M's Factory Authorised RII...

The V36 sedan is out already... the Coupe is due in August.

Me patriotic? I'm just stating it the way I see it. I'm not quite sure what you mean with all that about being nationalistic, but it's an uphill battle trying to promote an obviously Japanese originated motorsport in Australia with the 'power base' rooted firmly in V8 Touring car racing. This fact alone will keep Drift at the current level unless the 'power base' becomes interesed... they won't have any interest if there isn't a viable business case put before them... in order to do that you'd have to sell out to the V8 crowd. Like I said, that would amount to suicide for drift purists. Holden v Ford drift... sounds awesome. With the 'arrogance taking over'... I don't think people like seeing that permiate in as much as they like talking shit on the culprits ie "See that wanker when he did his post-race interview? rah rah rah..." they like talking shit, but need some arrogant tool to instigate it. Controversy..... You're right, that'd never happen here (Japan) but then again, Japanese are cultrually more respectful of each other at face value. In Australia there isn't that rigid social expectation to 'be a certain way'. You're going to get people jokingly (or seriously) slagging off others in Australia... thats part of the culture. This isn't confined to motorsports, you get it everywhere. Anyway, I hope some breakthrough does happen and drift gets the respect and support it needs to grow.

When I see drift in Australia, I think that there's too many people thinking "this is the next big thing", but totally ignore the fact that good 'ol V8 loving Australia is outside waiting to get their racing track back after the event and into peoples hands who 'know what they're doing'. It's hard to explain the mentality of the average Aussie when it comes to an Asian derived activity. They might think it's exciting and great to watch, but then the next thing that comes out of their mouth is "Skaifey could do better in a V8 Supercar though".... In order to get any bigger in Australia IMO you've got to appeal to the V8 brigade more... ALOT more. That will probably be suicide for the drift purists, but you're in Australia right? Thats the way it is... When I see drift in Japan, I see a cultrually respectful group of people using their own countries cars and know-how with full support from big multinational corporations and car companies in an economic environment that was *built on the car*. Car companies in Japan virtually lifted it out of economic doom after WW2, and anything connected with selling more cars or adding to brand mystique or whatever is looked upon favourably. Although with the emphasis now on eco-friendly designs and conservation, I don't know how much longer things like drift and motorsports in general will be tolerated at a local level in Japan... it won't last forever thats for sure.

You sure that isn't a leftover sign from Infiniti's failed attempt in AU back in 1990? If it's a brand new decently large sign thats recently been erected on the streetside then maybe they've got something brewing...

How can they sell the GT-R as an Infiniti without a proper established sales channel? Well lets assume Infinitis will be sold off the regular Nissan dealership, where is the preparation for that? If it were a possibility, you'd definately see some kind of arragements being made right now to sell the Infiniti models already available, let alone a car that isn't released yet. Unless of course the GT-R will be the debut model for Infiniti... but somehow I can't imagine the incredibly limp-wristed Nissan AU doing such a thing. Maybe when the 2012 GT-R comes out, they can consider selling the 2008 one because they're so backwards thinking...

I can't find one at all... there literally nothing out there right now. Besides, owning something as old as an N13 in Japan would be a rolling liability, as the monthly parking fee/regitration/insurance cost would be worth more than the car...

No you read me wrong I meant that the 2DIN setups are 'usually' installed at factory (hence it'd be easier to install 2DIN navi screen in one of those obviously), so the cheapest/easiest way would be to start off with a car with one of those. The factory navi from Nissan on the other hand is very good as is, and I've never seen anyone ditch the retractable screen and navi system for a 2DIN setup... I'm not saying it can't (or hasn't) been done! Also it's a lot of mucking around, was not sure whether you were going to do it yourself... IMO better to pay someone. Cheers.
