  1. I've owned both - I absolutely loved my R32 when I had it and did all sorts of power/suspension mods over two years...It ended up being pretty quick, but at the end of the day the torqueless nature of the old RB20 did me in...I hated having to put in so much effort just to get it to go, it felt more suited to the track. So, I ended up buying a Series 2 R33 to replace it, a Skyline model I swore I would never buy, and I will say right away that even it's it stock standard form it's a far better car then my '32 despite all the mods, the RB25 is truly a far superior motor and the chassis really doesn't really feel less nimble. Torque is available from low RPM and you don't need to rev it out constantly to move at a decent pace. Once I grew used to the rounder look, suddenly the R32 didn't seem as sleek as I remembered either (as much as I love the look of the R32)..........food for thought, anyhow.
  2. Hey Jared, I reckon that's a great result, understated but different. Looks almost like a stock fitment from the back which is also a good thing, no unwanted attention! I see what you mean about the front/dump being quite close to the body...the angle of the cat-converter flange makes it especially noticable - still if it's holding together and doesn't knock on the body, then it's fine. I'm still buying all the parts for my exhaust, the cat-back section is yet to arrive (end of July). I actually skimped a little bit on the cat-converter - I wanted the style you have, but ended up going one of BATMBL's big-body 3" ceramic cats (highest flowing on the market until the 'metal' style came out)...it was so cheap through his group buy too. Substantial performance improvement you say?....Oh yeah!
  3. this is brilliant....I have the other crappy type of filter wrench (el-cheapo inline thing)...it's usually fine for the skyline, but it caused over an hour of swearing when working on my parents Mazda B2600 ute, there's absolutely no room around the filter for the tool I have....I eventually loosened it, not not without completely squashing it with g-clamps hoping these would work better!
  4. Hi mate, Have you still got the R34 intercooler? If so, can you please post some pics! Thanks.
  5. Hey BATMBL, I bought one of your 3" large body cats a while back to put on my old R32 (which I've since sold) and was really happy with the product...now I'm trying to decide whether to go another for my R33 or go the whole hog and get a Catco metal cat. So we know the 3" Catco metal cat flows 706CFM, but I'm interested to know the flow figures for the 3" big body ceramic substrate cat so I can compare & decide? If you could let us know that would be great!
  6. Hey Jared - that's very interesting, did you go for the mild steel or stainless dump/front? As I recall they're made by different companies....not sure if they're working from the same design. So, did they bracket the front/dump to the body somewhere to keep it in a lower position, not hitting the body? I remember the 3" pacemaker front pipe (adjoined to an HKS split dump) I had on my old '32 had that downward curve you mention and then came back up near the end join with the cat - the fit was perfect. So now I don't know whether to go with the BATMBL design or not, damn spannners - always flying into the works....at least I know the cat is really good. Anyway - I await your pics!
  7. Hey Jared, Glad to hear you've ended up with a great system at the end of the day. Goes to show what difference a good middle muffler makes to the noise output! The power/torque increase sounds very promising also (ie. can't wait for mine to arrive). Did you go for a Catco 'metalcat' style cat from BATMBL as well as the split front/dump? Now, where are the pics?! I need to see how great the larger twin pipes look.
  8. Hmmm, yeah sounds like the bigger resonator will solve your problems....check the below pic of the CES exhaust, it uses a twin pipe rear, and a decent sized middle to achieve 89dB output. How's the rest of the system though? You've used a BATMBL split front/dump, which cat? ...and lastly - how was the power increase? Let us know how you go!
  9. Arrrrggggh, I feel for you mate - I had the same thing with my first car (a barina of all things!!), I firstly had a dual-tip aftermarket rear muffler that was kinda loud, but died off at high revs / highway speeds...perfect....Then I went for the full sik 2" system, extractors and hotdog resonator, was told it would be just as quiet.....ended up with this tiny little car that was far louder then it ever should have been (ie. it was slow!), and droned like a mofo.....I didn't really care at the time, but a barina was hardly going to attract the wrong kind of attention and I wasn't driving it much. Get them to sort it mate, shove a decent sized oval middle muffler in there.....Or, for instance I notice the HKS super drager exhaust which is supposed to be quietish for a cannon style yet still retains awesome flow has both a hotdog and an oval muffler to keep the noise down...it's an option anyhow. Let us know how you go, hope it at least looks awesome!
  10. Hey Electro, When it eventually arrives, I'll give you the full report on my system! Seems like a long way away now though. As for resonators, be careful - they are major factor in reducing cabin drone (one of the negatives of a free flowing exhaust). You may not need a full/oval muffler though if your rear muffler is really good, talk to your exhaust store and be sure to at least investigate a hotdog style resonator....believe me, the last thing you want is a system that seems quiet, but happens to resonate through the cabin at highway revs.....
  11. Hey Electro, Glad to hear you've decided on the custom path, sounds like you're getting a good deal as well! Remember to get pics of it once installed, it's going to look great! Here's what I ended up getting, a brand new Trust MX 3" catback, as pictured below....Decided that at the end of the day I don't care much if it's not exactly 89dB or dual-tip - Trust have an excellent reputation for making exhausts that fit perfectly and I got it at an awesome price (Yahoo Japan auctions). It looks a bit classier than a cannon (one of my requirements) and also won't be too noisy. Coupled with a Catco 'metal' cat and a BATMBL split front/dump, it's going to be awesome.....now I've just got to wait 10 weeks or so to receive it..................
  12. Hi BSK, I've got the exact same noise, I believe in my case it's either the timing belt (brand unknown) or the idler/tensioner bearings (more likely)....I used the 'screwdriver stethoscope' method to pinpoint where the whirring was coming from, put the head of a large flat head screw driver firmly against the timing case cover and listened thru the handle, I could hear the noise clear as a bell.....just be careful if you try, there's lots of stuff spinning on the front of the motor!
  13. Hi Guys, I've searched the forums, but can't find the definitive answer.....Will a standard front strut brace from an R34 Skyline fit an R33 Skyline? I've found one going cheap, and I want to be sure it will fit my car before I commit to the purchase. If anyone knows, it would be a huge help! Cheers
  14. yeah, the kakimoto's sound nice, not too noisy....pity bout the price for a new one though!! As for Reinhard, the Melbourne distributor confirmed that the 'silent' exhaust is around 95dB with baffles/silencers in place....and much much louder without - no go in my opinion...despite the unique look. I looked into a reconditioned HKS super drager today, sure they're cannon style, but they have a resonator & middle muffler as well as the cannon, and are reputed for being high-flow, low noise...hmmmmmm.....can I get over the poser style 5" tip though....dunno!
  15. Hey Electro, I've been researching the Reinhard exhausts....hard to find info, I did stumble across another Australian distributor, they have noise level info on their site - 95dB for the 'silent' dual cannon....that ain't exactly silent!! Check the site: http://www.importaddict.com.au/html/flashindex_1024.html Hi-power Racing in Melbourne have contacted me regarding these exhausts as well, I've asked them to confirm the noise level for the silent dual-cannon...since you were told 90dB, I'm hoping it's closer to that.
  16. Hey Electro, Heaps of good info flying around, couldn't be happier....still don't know what to buy though! Yeah, the silencers are the baffles that you can see in the pics.... http://www.geocities.com/telifatty/Reinhar...umi_gt_dual.jpg they actually don't look too bad at all now that I see them again (plus you can take them out when you feel like it) - I do love the twin pipe look and the price from Hi-Power racing is very good for such a cool product....hmmmm, you've got me thinking!! 90dB is very quiet, that's what required to pass an EPA test. Yep, I'm definitely going to purchase a BATMBL split dump & 'metal' cat once I've got the catback - awesome products for a good price (I've bought stuff from him b4, top bloke). If you don't mind me asking, how much were you quoted for a reinhard shipped to your place? My interest is rekindled!
  17. hey mate, I sent you a pm a couple of days back...I'm still really interested in the exhaust if you've still got it....let me know! Thanks.
  18. Jasma is a Japanese standard for noise levels, not an actual exhaust brand - you'll find most brands have a Jasma approved exhaust - I believe they have to be less then 93dB to qualify which is still twice as loud as the Aussie standard of 90dB. Trust PE2 is meant to be good, it's a cannon, sounds great - it's got a big middle resonator - so it's not too loud.
  19. Hi nuffsaid, Thanks for the feedback on the Kakimoto.R, that's exactly what I'm after - quiet but not too quiet, ie. nice idle, meaty down low - but goes away when you're cruising at highway speeds. Interesting what you say about dump/cat not making a difference - I've noticed the opposite. I had a 3.5" japanese catback on my old, near std R32 (cannon style complete with punched out cat, unbeknownst to me at the time), I added a 3" bigbody hiflow cat + front pipe + HKS split dump and it opened up the top end quite a bit, felt the same everywhere else though - I put that down to the fact that I'd added a functioning cat converter..... So, being that you've almost got the exact system I'm looking at getting - how much power gain do you think you've got? CES predict a 24kw (flywheel presumably?!) gain from their full exhaust system: http://www.cesracing.com.au/products/ Surely you would have received similar if not more?
  20. Hey Electro, I'm still in the same position as you...I just don't want to compromise on my original ideas, so it looks like my exhaust is going to cost just over 2k which is going to hurt the wallet big time!! (still thinking BATMBL front/dump & 'metal' cat with Kakimoto.R catback from BT-Revolution) FYI - I heard the twin pipe Reinhards are pretty damn loud without the tail-pipe silencers in, and they spoil the look of the exhaust IMO.
  21. Hey Paradizzle, I'm after one of those myself, so far I've found only one place that can get them - BT Revolution, check his thread on these forums... http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...T&f=141&t=82023 ...PS, what did it sound like while it was still good?
