Our New Dr30. Our Old Prince Skyline Gt
clubracer replied to clubracer's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Well I found some rust. Bummer. I had a custom pedal mount made up for a wilwood pedal box so once that was done it was time to really start cleaning up the interior so I got to gridning all the left over bits of deadener out including all the stuff I missed (firewall/foot wells). On the drivers side I cam across a few small rust spots that go right through, but then my drill with the wire brush went straight through the kick panel, so I'm taking the guards off and engine out to repair these sections (found some bad rust in the strut towers. On well it will be a chance to clean up the engine bay and then give the whole interior, engine bay and boot a coat of paint. -

I sat in it this week when the seat was in. Actually felt like a race car for the first time... I made engine noises and pretended to change gears. -

Cage done... now onto the job of making it look nice. More deadener to remove. Also fitting the wilwood pedal box. -
Have you got any steering and suspension parts?

The cage is about 75% complete. The bottom half of the roll hoop diagonal, the widow and door bars, plus the front strut tower bracing to go. Will be a national spec cage, just in case I think I'm fast enough to compete in something a bit more trophy worthy! -
Can I buy them from you?

Geez that looks awesome!

Have made some great progress this week. The main hoop, back stays, front legs and harness bar are all in place, and next week we'll get the rest done. I've also made a few more purchases this week making it an expensive week!! On top of the dash and computer I also got an electric power steering pump from an Astra, an electric water pump and a kit to get rid of the distributor and replace with 4 coils and crank trigger. SO once the cage is finished next week I can start getting the engine prepared for the rewire and tune. Need to fit both water and power steer pumps, remove all the other crap in the engine bay I wont need, test fit the dry sump setup. I'm also looking to get an R33 GTST turbo as the standard one has a heap of shaft play - I wanted something cheap that would be good for a basic tune for when I first run the car. Later down the track when I build the proper engine, I'll change the turbo to something more suited to racing, along with everything else I'll have to do... So more photos next week once the cage is complete! -

Spending money is fun... So last week I purchased the Adaptronic ECU and the race technology Dash 2 Pro - it will be the only gauge I have, and it has full data logging and and GPS lap timing. Feature wise it's up there with the Motec GPS dash kit, it's just 1/3 the price... And finally the cage is going in. I am still waiting for the bump steer and rear coilover spacer kits to arrive so I just drilled some temporary holes in the rear strut towers to get the thing rolling (and the front has a heap of toe out!) Here are some photos. The cage was literally started today so the feet were done, just need to be welded in. The main hoop is bent up so by the end of the week the car is really going to start looking like a race car.... I also cut up the bonnet and boot for the flush mount latches... I cannot wait to get the suspension setup so I can see how it sits. Next week the cage should be finished and we'll also be cutting the rear guards to tyre clearance before the flares go on (and I'm ditching the white flares - too big, too ugly). Going for some Topstage dry carbon versions that are a bit smaller. -

Hey guys, Need a motorsport spec chassis loom made, and an ECU wired up (again, preferably with motorsport spec connectors). Who in Sydney can anyone recommend? Seems Melbourne is full of guys like this, and I really dont want to go to Melbourne to have this done! Cheers Peter

Hey guys, I'm building a budget DR30 for IPRA and looking for a T28 BB turbo (Jap spec S14 and S15 Silvia) and I think R34 GTR. It's a budget build, hence wanting a good 2nd hand unit. If you want to know why the T28 I have t run a 36mm restrictor so these are a good start. Open to anything reasonable. Cheers Peter

I've made a design change. It came to my attention that the kit wasn't going to be IPRA legal (which is what I'm building my DR30 for). Tie rods ENDS are free, but I have to use standard tie rods (or from another similar car). The use a normal rod end would put too much strain in the shank, so I've designed my own tie rod end that takes a motorsport spec spherical bearing. The good news is its a more elegant design, although it might cost a touch more, it will be more robust.

When I first bolted up the front brake I was a little disappointed in myself. This was my first ever CAD design (brake discs hats and caliper mounts) and when I nipped everything up, they were out by about 1 - 2mm. I was annoyed because I didn't want to have to shim anything. Well it turns out I was wrong! Today I swapped the bleeders/pipes on the calipers (so they mounted the right way up) and then put everything together TIGHTLY. And it all works perfectly. Perfect spacing everywhere. No need for shims! Now everything has to come apart again for final assembly (new lock nuts, split pins, bearings etc). All the hard work and double checking measurements again and again has paid off! Even my machined down wheel nuts have fit perfectly. I think the next couple of weeks everything is going to come together very quickly, with brakes, suspension and cage. Last bit will be wiring, computer and tune, then time to do some track days... -

I couldn't help it. I had to see how they were going to fit. Actually for an AE86 Sprinter but I'll modify them to fit. I thought the square edges would suit the lines of the car better than the normal universal ones that are out there. -
Hey guys, I'm finalising the design and these should be in production in March. Just some final measurement checks and also some dust boots for the bearings. The complete kit front/rear will be around $250 - $280 and will come with everything you need to grab your S13 front uprights, S13 coilovers and bolt them in. Please note this is for the DR30. The R31 kit will differ slightly. Looks like we have 5 interested guys here. I'll be producing 10 kits to start with.
-
Hey guys, Here are the basic mockups of the bump steer correction kit (not finalised) and I've also created a rear coil over adapter - as you know S13 coilovers in the rear of a DR30 need to be at their highest setting (usually) just to get a lowered ride height (can't get a standard height) so I have created these that will bolt onto your coilovers so you have more height range adjustment, plus no need to drill holes as it converts from 2 to 3 hole. Haven't worked out pricing yet but will be using top quality bearings on the bump steer kit which might drive up the price a little, but you don't want them failing on you!

In other news we are going to have the Prince back on the track in the next couple of months after an extremely long engine build. Saw some good dyno results, and with some new Yokos we should finally be at the front of the historic field. It's only taken 20 years... more to come. -
It's a bit picky but my interior door cards are a bit tatty and I wanted to get them retrimmed to match the race seat. Does anyone know anyone in Sydney who they can recommend?

Gey guys, I'm building my improved production race car and I have a bunch of tatty door cards that I want to get retrimmed to match my Sparco seat. Can anyone recommend anyone good in Sydney where I can have this done? Cheers Peter
