I posted a thread the other day about my exhaust temperature sensor (http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=103482)

Since i re-screwed in the sensor it ran fine for a day but now the warning light is flashing again, its not the engine light the symbol looks like a cat converter with steam coming of it, i assume its a temperature warning light. Since this light is still coming on and off while im driving does that mean that i have to replace the sensor cause its damaged? (since it got filed dragging on the road) if so how hard is it to replace (can i do it myself) and is it an expensive item to buy? Is damage going to be done to the car if i keep driving it with the warning?

The second problem is from what ive read is common but i just need clarification. When im driving my car a bit harder (above 5500rpm) it stuters a bit under boost and the revs are not smooth to the redline. From what i can remember it is most likly the spark plug and or the coil packs that have given up and can no longer provide a good enough spark under high boost pressures. Is this correct and if so what sort of price am i looking at to get new plugs and or coil packs (splitfires etc) and how easy are they to install can they be done by most people? or are they more a job for an experianced auto electrician?

Any help regarding these question will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Just did a bit of searching and found out that the exhaust sensor is not needed and wont cause a problem so i will remove it all together and plug the whole.

I would still like conformation on the second question regarding inconsitant revs, is it the coil pack and or spark plugs?

$25 for a set of plugs will answer that question

I had that Exhaust Temp Sensor light on in my GTR for a while, not long after I had new turbos fitted, the car started running like a dog and the Cat was steaming! (Cat and dog reference pure coincidence! :P )

So initially I thought the Cat internals had melted...and well...had it removed.

Car still ran like a dog and would only run on the smallest of throttle openings.

To cut a long story short, I stumbled across the problem when removing the Plastic cover which bridges the rocker covers on the RB26, Not long after having new turbos fitted I painted the rocker covers, and had removed this panel, when putting it back on I did not plug the ignitor back in properly (Mounted on the panel) hence the plug came loose and car ran like shit.

Put the plug back in and No problems to this day!........

As mentioned, plugs around $25, Splitfire coilpacks around $600 depending upon how you source them.

Plugs are super easy, coilpacks come off to access the plugs and from memory they are plug and play also.

DIY approved! :D

You're welcome! DIY always starts with oil changes and plug changes and you try harder stuff from there. :) I'm a DIYer too.

There is a well illustrated guide on www.niztek.com (or .au?). I found removing the ignitor plug to be the hardest, but my car is a lot older :(

    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
    • I'd say it's a fair bet that the feed and return fluid lines will be in different enough spots that you would need to come up with a way to cut the originals short and adapt with new hard line adaption or braided teflon hoses or somesuch. But really, you have the car, you have the photos of the DMAX rack - you should be able to go out there and see for yourself whether they're in the same or different spots.
    • I've been doing some looking around and honestly was just considering throwing a new rack at it. I saw that the dmax silvia rack bolts up into the 33 with the silvia bushings but not sure if the high pressure lines will sit in the correct spot. I believe other version of the 33 rack are the same/similar to the racks that can be opened up without as much fuss so I assume the dmax rack would fit but any ideas?
    • I've never played with one, but I would expect that you are correct. That slot looks like it is intended to be used to unscrew the end, and the flats on the body would be better than grabbing it around the round bit with a pipe wrench. So, yeah, probably unscrews. You'll probably have to make a tool to drive in that slot.
