I was running a $50 200b with a locked diff for sick dorifto (well 1st gear at least) it was brilliant

Neil bought a big $$$$ n12 pulsar auto about $300 from memory. It was a fair bit quicker than the datto being fwd and auto but it was less fun.

They don't need to be registered for khana, just "safe". But of course if its not registered you have to work out how to get it to the event. But I guess you couldn't drive it there anyway, right?

You know what i was thinking, maybe i should get one of those "unregisterable" imports, but if i'm correct, you need a level 3 cams license to import one.

There was a green gazelle for sale with white rims somewhere.

how about an s13. they're fairly cheap.

i could get an unregistered car, but that's going to be a hassle to get it there. if there was a registered one i could get my parents to drive it there and back, but otherwise i don't know.

if i knew where albury/wodonga was i could consider it but if i need to finish high school i think i might give it a miss.

If you can do a motokhana as good as that I can tell you there isn't much you won't be able to do in a car. Karting is a great place for teaching you race track lines and how to "race" but motokhana's are a great place to teach you how to steer good.

Snowman i wish i could drive like that but i'm really ineperienced with driving because i'm only 13.

I want to learn the basics of driving first like steering, throttle control etc. So i think that motorkhanas would be a good place to start.

And where can i get more of them motorkhana vids.

The advice to go karting is by far, the best.

The "scale" speeds you will do in a proper race Kart ,will normally, far exceed the equivalent speeds you will reach in a car (possibly, unless you're in something highly modified).

Your reflexes, vehicle handling, vehicle setup and racecraft skills will be developed rapidly (if you're interested) with the regularity and level of competition. There are a greater of number of tracks within a 100km radius of Melbourne with regular meetings for Karts.

To be at the top in Karting, even in Australia much less, globally, your skills will be so honed that motorkhanas and sprint days will be a cakewalk!

You will gain -more rapidly- the valuable experience of driving a vehicle at or beyond it's limits.

I believe that it can still a very cheap sport particularly when it comes to wheel to wheel racing (as opposed to sprints and motorkhanas) I'd go so far as to say that it is STILL the cheapest wheel to wheel racing you can do. Unless you prefer chequebook racing!

At your age you may well start with a "J" motor in karting as your fastest option until you are older. I am not sure what age you are eligible for "S", Rotax & open motors but it might be 16yrs.

Silhouette Karts in Somerton have proper "J" karts for hire. Talk to Frank or Glenn Riddell (in Karts for years) about perhaps arranging a drive, to give you a taste of the type of machine you might have. I am sure you wil find them faster than your ability at this early stage, but you will be able to master them.

In my experience (and I raced Karts) The thing about "slow" karts (I mean real Karts not fun Karts) is that there is more to learn in driving a slow vehicle -quickly than a fast vehicle -fast. (I am sure that there are plenty out there who would differ on this!)

The list of drivers who have come out of racing Karts is well known and lengthy;

Russel Ingall, Craig Lowndes,Matt Coleman,John Fawkner, Marcus Ambrose,Cameron McConville,Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, etc. etc.

They're top professional drivers because of their experience in Karts (amongst other things).

Karts are definately the place to start.

Nope I have only been 2 or 3 times, but the Karts there are the closest to proper Karts you can get without owning one (or knowing someone else who has one). I know Frank and Glenn (and Steve) from "the old days" and I knew them as being very methodical and fastidious. Having driven there, I can vouch for the fact that the Karts (at least the ones I drove) were well set up maintained.

Get into some competition, I don't believe that you will be disappointed!

I went go-karting yesterday at silhouette in somerton.

And no not in a hire kart, in a rotax 125.

It was good except i crashed one the 3rd lap (first out in the kart between mates and myself) at the 2nd right hander from the start line (or the first corner out of the pits). I apparently spun out and had a 360 degree turn in the air. I ended up hitting the tyre barrier and the kart was on top of a tyre (wrecked their nice tyre barrier...lol). I got off and took it off the tyre with a little help and drove it back to the pits. I'm a little battered and bruised on my ribs but i'm alrite for now.

Then after i got off the kart i realized that my foot was on the acceleraor cable thus causing me to keep accelarating and spin.

Later on my bro-in-law and his mate were having a race and one of them tapped the other lightly and they both spun out and caused the rear axle to bend.

So they repaired it and i was the test dummy (first one out after repairs) and was suprised to see that the brake cable wasn't tightened and causing me to haul up really, really slowly.

Anyway i think after that experience i might skip karting, and start out in khana's (if i can save up a bit more).

I also looked on the cams website and figured out that i can get a L2S when i'm 14.

I was looking on ebay and there was a r32 gts4 or gtst for 4k but only as an unreigsterable race import.

What do you guys reckon??

i got the sh!ts first time out.

it freaks me out too. i moved over so this guy could overtake me on the outside and there was like half a karts space on the inside and thats were he flew past.

and last time my mates front wheel got stuck between this guys radiator and engine.

looked freaky as.

this would be a killer to sell once i'm good enough to upgrade

but if i was to get it (most likely not) can you get rally rego on them so you can drive them to the track???

I'd still recomend karting, in J's there'd be less damage happening because they r much slower than rotax's. I raced J's for a couple of years n had the best fun racing, especially when it got really close, adrenalin was pumping, it was unreal. If i had the time i'd still be doing it now! I raced on a shoe string budget, but i was still competing with the guys that were spending up to $30k/year. I still thinl its the cheapest and best way to get into racing!!

    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back.
