so me and my dad are talkin about fuel prices and i go yeh premium is a killer, then he starts raving on about why im using premium when prices are that high. and i tell him well my car needs dat stuff bein one of those cars ect ect. his like wat kind of crap have u got even my car dosnt use that stuff (series 5 bmw).

his argument is sure he should put that stuff in his car to...everyone wants to...but wheres the money gonna come from. is there anything i can say to him to explain my SPORTS car needs it? he rkns just cuz my car costs 30k and not 130k its not worth it.

in a way i do agree with him but.......i wanna take care of my car lol

Its the octane in the fuel. Our cars are tuned for high octane fuels. Regular fuel in japan has a higher octane then the premium fuel we have in australia.

You use shit fuel, you get engine knock, which is not good. Do a search for Ping, Knock, Detonation, Pre-Ignition, rich and retard - you'll start to understand why you need to use premium fuel.

Tell him you have a turbo and he doesn't. Go into the jargon about how advanced your timing is and the Japs run their cars on 103RON etc, etc, etc. Just confuse the guy and he'll give up.

Being a 130k 5 series and post 93, I'm assuming he's driving a 530i and from all accounts, his car should be using premium unleaded too.

I use premium or an ethanol blend fuel.

If I don't, I get (audible) pinging. If you don't mind the risk, you could duplicate the experiment.

Boring old ULP, 2nd gear and full throttle to (almost) redline. Um, offstreet or pulling onto a freeway for legalitys sake.

Mr Italy! is right. just tell him your car will ping, and then tell him how much a new engine (plus labour) will cost. Its like insurance, only alot more fun.

thats wat i wanna tell my dad but i cant exactly say my car runs my efficiently at redline LOL. he be like....wat??? ur speeding.

and that willl be the end of it

i tell him the car runs better but yeh....i dunno his one of those dads that u either listen or shutup

i put regular unleaded in my stock as a rock R33 GTS-t when it first got off the boat and it PINGED all the way to compliance!

haha well theres a whole 10RON difference between the fuel it tasted before it got on the boat and after it landed...

Exactly...

LOL tell your dad he SHOULD be using premium unleaded as well.

Besides, it isn't a big difference at the end of the day.

Saving those few cents isn't going to make your rich, nor is spending those few cents going to make you poor.

That's my moto.

Not to mention the extra detergents and stuff in the premium fuels, goes along way to keeping your fuel injection system nice and clean.

Your Skyline has active knock sensing that will retard the timing by x amount however, it isnt designed to pull timing enough to cater for a drop in ron from 100 to 91.

Besides, once the system even your old mans pulls the timing etc, your fuel consumption and power will go to the shitter.

So he may not end up saving 4c/L after all.

Just lately i've been thinking about the whole ULP Vs PULP debate and i'm starting to wonder if it's worth it. Ever since i've had my car it's had only BP Ultimate which is 10 cents a litre dearer than regular ULP. And i'm wondering if it makes and difference what so ever. The compliance manual that came with my car says 91 octance.

And just the other week i had this guy who was probably around 50 years old come in the most mint series 2 r33 i've ever seen come and and put regular ulp in it. And when i asked him about his car he said he was an importer and had just bought it back from japan along with a couple of R34 GTR's. He said he runs the GTR's on PULP but he reackons the GTST are fine on ULP.

yeah, he runs it on ULP because he's an IMPORTER and he DOESN'T GIVE A CRAP about what happens to the cars, as they're not his for very long, lol..

as for your dad, well, he should be using PULP in his cars as well, as thats what BMW Recommend.

He could possibly be voiding his warranty (though, by the sounds of it, that ran out a while back, if its a 93 model), as BMW Recommend their customers use PULP

There's a sticker underneath my hood that says use equal to or greater than 95. (93 33 det)

However, I' not sure if this was put there during complience or factory.

It also says that the ignition timing should be 10 degrees- I thought that it is suposed to be 15. :(

Regardless, all jap cars are suited (timing-ignition maps) to jap fuel, and should be run on 95 or above. I have seen countless threads where people put better fuel in the tank on the dyno and get better results, and less knock.

Thats a bit harsh, my dad reackons i should be riding my pushbike to work instead of driving cos of the cost of fuel, doesn't mean he's stupid.

You junkbroad minded person. Sounds like you came from a very unloving family.

Also this imported dude said this new car was his new daily driver.

And that sticker under your hood is a compliance sticker. Your car should have them in a few places for things like service intervals, tyre sizes and pressures etc, etc.

Mine says 91 RON and thats on a R34.

i think everyone is a little shitty with petrol prices... but the difference between ULP and PULP is less than $10 a tank... it's hardly gonna break the bank... and my theory is if u want feul economy, by a daewoo or something equaly girly, if u want performance, you gotta pay the price...

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
