Hey all,

Short Story - my car was tuned recently, inectors are at 90%.....told you it was short.

Now, I am planning on getting Nismo 600cc injectors fitted but will this stop the ticking I am getting at the moment? Are mine currently ticking because they are at 90% load or is it because the lifters are dirty?

Its pissing me off yes

Bloke - it is an RB26, with a mechnical (ie not hydraulic) valve train. It's the valve train. They all do it.

So bigger injectors still have no affect? and its not because its dirty/sticky?

Its very embarissing driving a GTR that sounds like a diesel truck going passed 2500rpm :(. Driving passed train stations in the morning I try to keep the revs at idle, coz I know all the people are looking at me :P.

Maybe its it coz its a Skyline...

Yep, shes a whinging little bitch my engine, its fine at cold start but when the engine starts to heat up in the morning it ticks very loud. Then when I drive home its a lot quieter, almost silent.

I get a ticking noise in the morning or when the car is cold, the ticking increases with revs (mainly around the 2000rpm-3000rpm) after 3000rpm it cant be heard. Once the car has warmed up the noise dissapears. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way of fixing it, it drives me nuts.

My car is a R33 GTS, i was wondering if it could be just the injectors or the lifters (or a broken lifter).

It sounds like your problem is more to do with lifter noise, specifically lack of lubrication at cold start.

This could be due to lack of oil, or more likely due to the fact the problem dissapears when the car is warm: Worn lifters or oil that is too (thick or thin) in its cold state.

What rating oil are you using and how many k's has your car done?

(BTW doesn't sound like a broken lifter, this would cause the noise all the time, probably alot louder as you rev).

car has done roughly 117000km

oil im not entirely sure about, got my mechanic to change it last time, i think its shell synthetic possibly 5W-40?? (it was changed about a month ago and still looks really clean

could you suggest an oil i should use

Lifter noise in FTO's is a common thing (most Mitsu's actually) and is often stopped by adjusting the lifters clearance, dunno if you can do this in the RB's but maybe look into it?

The type of oil you use also makes a difference.

Hey Micheal, sorry I didn't post back. I've been away on hols. Plus i'm trying not to hiijack this thread, but it looks like its too late for that so:

Now i'm not a mechanic so don't take this as gospel, but basically, skylines use hydralic lifters which as the name suggests, uses oil to fill the lifter.

When yoy stop your engine any one of your lifters on the camshaft lobe is under pressure of the valve spring; therefore a leak from the chamber can occur.

This is normal, and if you haven't driven your car for say 3-4 days and start it up, you'd expect to hear lifter noise for about 10 seconds or so as the fluid fills the lifters.

Now as a car gets older and the engine wears its normal for tollerances to become larger, that is why as your car gets older its a good idea to change the viscosity rating to suite the current condition of the engine.

Basically the older the engine the thicker the oil.

From the factory skyline ran a semi-syn at 7.5w, most guys on here (and it sounds like you too) Run a 5w fully syn, which is fine and probably better for the engines internals and turbo etc. But if you're really concerned about your cold weather starts on the lifters, you might want to consider running a slightly thicker oil, say 7 or 10w as this oil might take a fraction longer to reach the galleries, but fill them and operate a higher viscosity from start thus filling the lifters faster.

Beware though, because this might not fix your problem, there is always the chance you have problems with sludge build up, either in the oil pick up sleeve, or galleries. This can cause oil starvation until enough oil finally enters the lifters for them to work properly.

This is probably less likely though.

I'd get in my car and start it cold and keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge and see if it shoots up pretty much straight away. If it does you'r oil pressure should be good, and at least you know thats not really the problem, if it delays or stays low and takes a while to raise in pressure, this would suggest a worse problem then just clearance issues.

In the end, your mechanic should be able to advise you on the best cause of action for your car, obviously there could be other factors.

It might be an idea to leave your car with them overnight so they can to a true cold start and see how the car behaves.

Hope all this jibberish helps, and again as I said i'm not a mechanic.

I'm reasonably sure that the RB25's lifters are self adjusting.

Oh and BTW michael, i'm not sure if I mentioned it, but the downside to using to high a viscous oil on start up can be that the oil it harder to move and takes longer to fill the lifters, which can be worse. So don't go to thick.

Also, there are other things that can cause a ticking when the engine is cold such as a crack in the exhaust manifold that expands and closes once the car is warmed up etc...

    • Did you panel beat the dents or have you tried to repair this only using filler?  Is your sanding block soft/flexible and is following the shape of the panel rather then just knocking down the high points? 
    • I haven't knocked them down yet. I think I made the repair more complex than it should have been. I had rock chips combined with waviness and dents and I tackled it all in one because it was near each other and just end up wasting a bunch of bog lol. I'll knock down those areas and see how I go. And yep what you are saying at the end is correct. I think I might be sanding the top of a steep hill then my sanding block falls into the dent and gets rid of the guidecoat if that makes sense. Though shouldnt unless I'm covering too big of an area with not a long enough block. I'll try something new and provide some updates. Getting there though! Thanks as always.  
    • Yeah makes sense, hard to comment on your situation without seeing what your doing. I was talking generally before, I would not be looking to randomly create low spots with a hammer to then have to fill them.  It's hard without seeing what your doing, it sounds like you are using the guide coat to identify low spots, as you're saying the panel is still wavy. I don't see how you're not ending up with patches of guide coat remaining in a wavy panel? Once the high spots are knocked down to the correct level, surely to have a wavy panel you need low spots. And those low spots would have guide coat still in them?
    • So I'll put filler past the repair area a bit to make sure I don't miss anything. Then I'll block it until it's almost level, put the guidecoat, then keep blocking until it's gone. Then it's still wavy.  In regards to hitting the panel, I saw this video might give more context - Skip to 0:47 he knocks it down. But yeah I'm sanding until the guidecoat is gone then checking because otherwise my filler is still well above the bodyline. Unless what you're saying is I should put guidecoat around it early, surrounding the filler then stip once it's gone?
    • I refreshed the OEM injectors with the kit and connected it up. It now ideals okay even with the IACV removed. Driving still has the same cutoff issue like the 550cc injectors so the issue is somewhere else. I bought FPG's Fuel Pump Hanger. I will be installing it next, but it is not as straightforward as I thought it was with my limited wiring knowledge and no instruction on the specific model I purchased (FPG-089). I also got the incorrect billet clamp as I could not find info on the OEM sizing.
