Hi Guy's,

Yesterday I drove my VL Turbo(Rb25/30 combo) back from Golf and got pulled over just before the Boronia Heights exit. The old girl has had a full rebuild and went in today for its first 500km service.

I was there with the car idling for about 5 - 10 minutes. Anyway while I was sitting there after a couple of minutes I felt a pop in the idle and within a couple of minutes it had changed into running like a pig on five cylinders. As I went to take off it was spewing out White smoke and chugging. I've had a blown head gasket before(Hence the rebuild) and seen White Steam coming out when that occurred but this was smoke. Temp gauge, oil gauge show all is good.

I limped it home and was contemplating suicide as all of my money is gone from the rebuild. Anyway had it towed to my mechanics today and when the towie turned up I had to move the car. Started it and it ran without a problem in sight.

The mechanic called and said he couldnt fault it. I turned up and witnessed him test it for a head gasket leak (The gasket is a metal one) but it passed with flying colours. Took it for a good drive up and down the freeway but she never skipped a beat. Everyone is like WTF nothing seems wrong with it.

Anyway last night I drove to the Brownstains video shop and pulled up which is on a slight incline. By the time I had dropped it in the chute and got back in the car there was that pop in the idle again. I started to freak out and started driving out of the carpark and the pop went and she drove home without a problem. Wasnt till I got home and thought about it I realised when I was pulled over the car was on an incline the same as the video shop.

Rang the mechanic and told him about my brain storm and he couldnt really offer anything other than maybe a dribbling injector etc but never heard of the car billowing out white smoke. I also spoke to JHH Performance who couldnt think of anything either.

The car is running a Haltech E6X(Batch firing not sequential injection), Slightly rich stocko tune for the run in, Haltech Ignition Modules, Standard Injectors RB25(Maxxed out), Standard Rb25 Series 1 coils, Standard Fuel system Fuel reg pump etc, Gt35/40.

ANYONE GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS OR SIMILAR PROBLEM. I DID A SEARCH BUT FOUND NOTHING THAT HELPS.

I think the "white smoke" has everyone stumped.

White smoke is usually oil and water mixed and evapourated.

Usually foud in blown head gaskets (but the leak down test proved that wrong) or turbos (would be continuous).

I would check the colour of the smoke next time it happens and then report back.

Yeh once I mention white smoke everyone goes aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa nup no idea. Head gasket was what I was thinkin but the test dispelled that and it wasnt like steamy....... I did a search last night on here and some people have mentioned white smoke as unburned fuel which makes me think it might have been something in the fuel rail, injectors etc. It is running pretty rich.

I will see how it goes I was just hoping someone might have had a similar experience.

    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
