Hi,

It seems I found the problem with my HICAS... My car can do more than 180kph and that leads me to believe that the speed sensor wire has been cut. I managed to work out where the ECU is (thanks to the forum), and managed to work out how to remove the footwell (thanks to a mirror and torch).

I couldn't see any wire cut at the base of the ECU, nor any wires cut on the way into the wiring trunk.. This leads me to believe that it's cut elsewhere.

Will having this wire cut affect the car in any way (except for HICAS playing up and no speed limiter)? Just want to make sure it's worth the effort trying to get the dash off to look in the back of the speedo...

there also is a wire directly near the hicas system with a speed wire, i couldnt tell you where but there is one on the ecu which is not the main one, which you may have problems if both are not cut, unless the main one near the hicas system which is the one that actaully measures the speed it will not work properly which is the case with yours.

Dr Drift - Here's the crux of that problem... I cannot for the life of me get the ECU out. I exposed it, took off the wiring cap (with much difficulty) but I could not get the ECU's bracket off the bolts it's mounted on. To describe further (stop me when I go wrong) there are 2 nuts and one screw that needs to be removed. The screw is down the bottom, and the nuts are up the top, and right up the back. I could move the top of the ECU's bracket off the bolt that it sits on, and the bottom of the ECU came free when I removed the screw that held it in, but I just can't get the back of the bracket off the bolt that it sits on.. It won't move foward, back, left or right. So tight...

Am I inviting trouble if I try to remove the ECU's cover while it's still bolted in place? I can then get in there with works digi-cam and get a couple of happy snaps.

Oh, and if I do somehow manage to remove the ECU bracket from the frame of the car, what's the best way of unplugging the wiring loom? Does the battery need to be disconnected, or just have the car off?

what speed have u taken ur car to? there are some differences between actual speed and what ur car shows on the speedo...for example ive taken my car past 180 on the speedo and it appears to cut out at approx 190km/h but in actual fact becuase of the calibration of things it is actually 180km/h....... if you've taken you car to eg: 230km/h fair enough but if eg: u've taken it to say 190. id say its just the difference in readings...

Nah, stock steering wheel. Something's a little weird 'cause Hicas will move my rear wheels while the car is stationary (not much more than a twitch though). No speed alert chime, and no speed limiter. Oh well, if it's not going to blow up my engine or anything, I'm not going to worry about it too much.

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
