Hey, I drive a VL (dont flame me, haha), and at the moment, a stock RB25det plus an automatic gearbox from an R33 GTST is being fitted.....

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, and I searched but could find anything, but, I just want to know what this gearbox is like to drive?

Please dont compare it to a manual, I just want to know if its good box for an auto, like does it change gears nicely, etc?

Also, what things normally go wrong with them, what common troubles do they get?

If someone can link me to a review of an automatic R33 GTST, maybe that would be helpful.

thanks

(edit: this should probably be in 'drivetrain and transmission forum, can this thread be moved?)

well ive had my auto R33 GTST for 6 months now and its been pretty good, good as in, if you push pedal to floor it lets the engine rev right out to redline,

maybe its the ecu thats controlling that...i dont know, i know alota auto boxes on other cars refuse to let the engine even go near the reline mark.

but the auto box in the skyline is quite happy to do it.

gear changes are very smooth but it can be hard to stick to 70km mark as the turbo tends to want to make you accelerate and if you let go of the pedal you slow down too much.

ok mate.. remember these words before you read anything else - most on here drive manuals nad have never driven an auto skyline.. thus, they only have a preconceived idea that automatic skylines are shit without having driven one. obviously you know that's not the case, so be wary of what advice you wish to take as some posts will be opinions, while others will be opinions based on the fact that they drive/own an automatic skyline

having said that, i drive an automatic r32, which has a similar (if not the same) gearbox to the r33

troubles i have had in the last 3.5 years? none

how does it shift gears? it can flare on some gear changes but that also depends on the gearbox condition. it drives well for me and changes great 99% of the time

its like anything mechanical - it will last a long and happy life if you service it properly (every 20,000kms) and use it as it were intended

oh, btw, i have a transmission cooler attached to mine, and i believe it was a worthy investment at less than $100 from supercheap

i have read of people running over 200rwkw in rb25 automatics without a hitch :D i personally run 155rwkw through my rb20 auto and it loves it :)

good luck with the conversion,

Warren.

:D its ...ok. I ran it at the track a couple of times foot to the floor and it survived.

It's not so good at cornering fast, as it decides to drop the revs right when you need them...pronounced especially on the rb20.

Ive got an R33 Auto....

Havent had any problems with shifting, slipping etc and i give it a bit of punishment. (Not tooo much tho)

Can anyone else confirm for me.... If i drop the auto into 2 (as it just slides in without pressing the button) to get the revs up would that do much harm to the auto? ...kinda like dropiing down a gear if it was a manual.

I've got the stock auto cooler do you rekon i should upgrade?

Auto Rocks :woot:

A few old threads on the auto:

You gotta filter out the biased and stereotypical replies and just read the worthwhile posts.

the 2nd thread is a bit off-topic but still helpful, and you may as well do the job properly if ur in the middle of converting now anyway.

:(

It could also be the NVCS (nissan variable cam system), rb25's have vv-t on the intake cam.

The auto box is only a 4speed isn't it?

What rpm do you guys sit at on the freeway eg. 100-110 km/h?

agreed with all of that. i havnt had any problems with my new gearbox ( i hada replace my old one due to the reverse clutch dying, the drive gears were fine ). and yeah, tis quite easy to redline it and stuff. only problem is how low the revs drop when you take your foot off the pedal, sometimes not good. but apart from that its fine.

isnt it a 4sp with overdrive?

yes.

correct.

? really??

My auto is 1,2,D plus overdrive

ie its 3 gears and overdrive becomes 4th gear

the r33 auto box is very similar to the Patrol auto box.

Im going to mod mine soon with the MV Automatics (Blackwood, SA) valve body upgrade for harder shifts. Already got a big oil cooler kit. Then she'll be sweeeeet.

    • Each to their own I guess  Me, I put just as much time into cleaning inside of the cars as I do on the outside As for getting wet, it is really no different than steam cleaning the carpets at home, apart from the cars carpet dries alot faster than the house, again, I only do it in the hotter months and leave the car opened up for a few hours As I only do it yearly, it is just before I do the diff and gearbox service, so I clean the carpets, then it's up on stands, wheels off, service, clean the undercarriage,  grease the bushings and do a nut and bolt check on everything  Disclaimer: I typically had all the time in the world to kill when I was working 🤣, so spending a full day or 2 cleaning, serving and "looking at stuff" was,  easily achievable, and a fun mental therapy day As for time to kill, I retired last Wednesday, so apart from my physical training, my days are filled with lots of random jobs around the house and garden...."Idle hands are the Devils something something" I am also buying a new house sooner rather than later, I'm actually looking at a potential property tomorrow, I'm looking forward to getting a car hoist as I'm starting to get to old to crawl around under a car, I can only imagine all the undercarriage cleaning and looking at stuff when that gets set up
    • Yeah, I'm not interested in wetting the carpets, and I don't care about brown dirt/dust that lives deep in the pile or underneath. It's not like I crawl around on them in my birthday suit or eat dropped food off them (because there is never any open food in my car). The seats are alcantara (cheap Chinese imitation alcantara, to be sure!) with barely 1" of foam pad behind the surface. That's not getting wet either. Any car that I would be happy to get the interior wet, I would not care to put the effort into.
    • We have one that holds 2.8L of water. On floor carpet that hasn't been touched in 2 or 3 years, will take a minimum of 2 fills of the tank to do a bedroom, and that's going AROUND the bed.   In the cruiser, I used an ENTIRE 2.8L tank, just on the front passenger footwell. But it had some fungus growing, and had been full of mud from being used as a 4WD for many years. I can do that floor again, and it will still pull mud out. However, the water now only looks dirty, not pitch black and leaving full sludge in the bottom of the tank it sucks back into. Oh, and, this is about a $1500 unit.
    • This is mine, works a treat for the cars, suction is good, I use the Bissell clean and protect stuff I have found giving it a good spray and light scrub with the soft brush on the head of the nossle for carpet, and a rub with a microfibre for cloth seats and cloth door trims, prior to another quick spray before vacuuming it up works the best @GTSBoy You would surprised on what it gets out of carpet and seats that actually "look" clean, I recommend that you test drive yours when you have a little time to kill, then post pics of the muddy looking water that I believe you will find
    • I think even the "commercial" capacity ones that you would hire from supermarkets etc wouldn't have the capacity to do all that much in one go. I will go through half a dozen tanks of solution and dumps/rinses of the waste tank for one little 2 seat sofa. Or similar for one 6 footish rug. That's the price you pay for something small that only takes up a bit of cupboard space, instead of something that takes up the entire laundry cupboard or half the shed.
