i love my R34 GTR seats

the reason i would go for a factory seat over a aftermarket seat is because if u dont get em and the rails engineered your up for a fine and 3 demerit points in NSW

If that is the case then as a seat not originally intended for that model they must be engineered. There is one cop here in Vic that may know the difference who is distributing folders of detail and photos to other TMUs.

In Vic, having referred to the VASS (Engineering handbook) rules a seat not originally intended for the model must merely be ADR approved. There are some other details regarding range of motion and pre ADR crap but not pertinent at this stage.

I personally live in QLD so I am not familiar with interstate transport department rules. However I know that across the board that a modification plate isn't worth the metal they're made from, if the item installed isn't genuinely up to ADR specifications.

For example take this scenario:

My good friend "John Smith" has a welder at home, along with some off cuts of tube steel, and "Bob Stapleton" is a automotive engineer. Myself and John decide to make a set of rails to install a set of fixed back Recaros into my R32 GTR. We finish making the home made rails and take the car around to old mate Bob's workshop. He makes us a modification plate and rivets it to the firewall.

Honestly if "officer Leroy" was to seriously check these rails, and seats, they would never in a week of blue moons seriously meet ADRs. Some times the money you save on seats you will have to spend to bring their instillation up to scratch, and that's not even considering the value of your time and effort.

Ultimately what I am saying is that I would personally rather argue in court, if needed, that my new seats are a newer design factory Nissan seat, on factory Nissan rails, bolted to my factory Nissan floor with no need for modifications.

The R34 GTR seats are a fantastic bolt in upgrade to any post R31 model Skyline seat(s), bar the R34 GT-t. I am 6'2" and these seat are just perfect for me, they are seriously the best seats I have sat it. I have previously had sets of R32 & R33 GTR seats and as great as they are, the R34 items are still a couple of notches above them.

Good argument, and I agree with all points except the dodgy engineering. My personal beef with the GTR seats is they don't fit my upper back and shoulders leaving me with no upper back support in the middle.

Sounds like vehicle mod engineering in Qld is a bit lax. I decided not to take up VASS due to icRoads needing 3 types of insurance and the likely cost. Made it financially unworkable knowing I'm home to Qld soon but the cost of insurance means engineering in Vic is expensive. I intend to do engineering in Brisvegas if the requirements stack up.

The engineer has to be satisfied the frames and anchorages are at least able to meet ADR 3 with full documentation to the fact that he considers welds, joints and material up to the task.

If you consider a set of nice Recaros (around $1500 ea new) and baseframes to suit Skylines at around $300 each for a straight bolt in with ADR compliance then a couple of thousand for R34 seats is in effect good money depending on condition. Cheaply (or any) priced second hand Recaros are probably more rare than GTR34 seats or even GTR33 seats for that matter.

Sorry Geoff I must not have stated my must stance well. I was “talking” in generalisims, in no way was I referring to QLD modification system as being relaxed at; it would be a foolish to think this. The ADRs are there for a reason, and that’s for the safety of the vehicle occupants, which many people forget.

I was attempting to convey that just because you have a modification plate saying your rails does make your rails/seat install legal, for safe. As you have stated unless the rails, and seat, meet certain ADR guidelines that “certificate” may not be worth the paper it’s written on.

The financial difference between several seats, to that of a set of R34 GTR items, may only come down to a few dollars after the other seats are installed to meet ADR ruling. Therefore from a financial perspective there may not be much of a difference, however as you mentioned seats aren’t one size fits all, seat selection will really come down to the personal preference of the individual driving the vehicle.

personally i think that price is rediculous but hey the economic valve of what something is worth "something is work what someone is prepared to pay"

i guess here in nz we're lucky you really dont need any certs etc for seats and sr3 recaros are sold for as little as 400 bucks.

my sr3's from an evo3 i paid 400 for, finding rails to fit and lower them in the car enough to be safe to drive with (while still moving) is the next dilemma (am 6'1 and knees hit the wheel)

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drive beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch.
