Due for an oil change on my R33 as I have done many times. I am about to return to my car after 3mnths of no use. I am thinking before I start it could be a good time to drain the oil as it all should be sitting nicely in the bottom of the sump. Or run it to warm it up so it drains easily.

Any theories appreciated.

Cold oil will drain a fair bit slower, but why not (if you're patient). After doing that I'd remove the spark plugs and squirt a little oil in each cylinder (not too much), wait a few minutes and then crank the engine (still with plugs out) until the oil pressure light goes out. Should have fresh oil over the inside of the heads when you look through the oil fill hole. Then replace the plugs and fire it up.

Mainly because the engine's been sitting for ages it'll have very little oil in the engine itself and you want to minimise the amount of "humungous pain" it goes through :(

Be prepared for the car to be a little harder to start and it'll blow smoke if you do that though.

Actually a thought in the pro-old oil group is to turn it over on the old oil and then dump it, because any wear particles generated due to lack of oil will go into the old oil, which you're about to dump. That means your new oil will be cleaner.

It's probably the kind of thing that makes less difference than you think it does, you could probably just change the oil start it and drive off and it'd be fine... heh :P

Don't worry mate, since I am awayalso, I have asked Chris and Simo to keep the motor tickin over with a few runs up to AIR and also the Hillclimb meets.

As a matter of fact the motor was oil surging as Chris was comming over one of the rises and so he topped it up with Valveline High Viscosity stuff......you know, the stuff you use for old Holdens and the like.

Freebagin's right, we have put over 10,000kms on the bitch while you were away. No need to drain it mate, as there is nothing left to drain - we have been running it dry for the past week!!!!!! It sounds a bit rough until you get it up to 10,000rpm, then she's fine!!!!!:bahaha:

I have not problems realising that my car can handle anything you guys can dish out. 10,000 kms no oil indicates you guys are still driving like Grandmas. Have you got the Quater mile under an hour yet. Normally I would expect my RE540's may be worn out after 10000k however if my suspicious are correct re your driving abilities I wouldnt be suprised if I cant notice any rubber missing. We will see. Nearly got a HC for $200 was too late. Dissapointing.

If the car was running at normal operating temperatures the last time it was run, then you can drain it cold (it will just take longer than if hot). As long as the engine was hot the last time the oil was up around the top of the engine, all the crap in it will flow freely down into the sump after you switch the engine off. From then it doesn't really matter how long you wait until you drain it.

However, there will still be a few more contaminants in the sump when it's cold, but not usually enough to be an issue. I still prefer to drain it hot for this reason.

If you run the engine for a few seconds when cold and then switch it off, you'll have the most crap possible around the upper regions of the engine so if you're going to start the engine before the drain make sure it's fairly warm before you drain it.

    • Have you done the Ignition Sync Wizard in the AEM software?
    • Find out what RPM it was idling at with the IACV unplugged. It's very weird that the rpm didn't change at all, and then it stalled. When it stalls is it nearly like a switch off, like you've turned the engine off? Or is it more stutters and sputters and coughs to death over a few seconds? Or does the RPM just slowly keep going down and down? Have you done a test of trying to start it with the AFM unplugged? Does it still die?     If you Follow Josh's advice on using Nistune to check the voltages (which is a perfect method!) if you see anything out of wack voltage wise, THEN get the multimeter out and read the voltage directly at the sensor. If the two vary, then you're now looking for a wiring issue vs a sensor issue. So be aware, what the ECU sees, may not be what the sensor is actually saying too...
    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
