I have Xenon HIDs lights on my R34...

If you have the same one as me...the housing is completely different from a standard one...you only need to change the bulb...but the bulb isnt any normal xenon bulb...its a special one...you have to take it out and have a look. that bloody xenon bulb cost $700 per bulb retail...i got it at $330 cost price.

I'm guessing if you were to change to standard headlights you would have to change the whole headlight.

CR34TION, your head light assembly needs to be changed! The XENON unit is completely different. The part is made in Aus [especially for compliance] I think the brand is NIKOH. Speak to any compliancer, they should be able to source them if you want.

Changing to a normal halogen globe wont work AFAIK!

Cheers.

BTW ylwgtr2 - how would you know what they are selling to us here in aus? for compliance? are you in aus or JP - your profile says yoko, jp

I checked the brand [oem] is ICHIKOH - i was close :D

Pushead:

Actually - that comment brings up something I heard recently... cops pulling over new euros (BMW, Audi, Benzo) for their Xenons?

Now... mine are factory (may not be ADR though) but surely a new Aus delivered BMW would have lamps that comply? Anyone else heard of this? Might as BaronBohr - he has E36 with Angels and Xenons...

Hahaha - everyone wants my wheels :D

The BMWs have Xenons as an option for $1800 (3 series) and Benzo for $2500 on C-Class... must be compliant. I guess it's one of those 'discression' things.

Will let you know if it ever causes me problems with the hammers.

I know that because my freinds sister has a 4 door R34 skyline that has the insert normal type headlights in it....and i do have an R34 GTR at home in aust of which i bought the standard type lamps for......what major company in there right mind would make a special headlight for the pissy little low volume scheme that the foolish aust gov have come up with??However there is a company in sydney that CONVERTS the xenon lamps to insert globes for a certain cost....but i wouldnt recommend distroying a perfectly good set of xennons...also the gas discharge adr states the lamps must be self levelling and have cleaners fitted to them to be approved....thats why you see them on bmw's....i know more abouut all this then you think!

YlwGTR:

Ah - very good point. The ones listed as options on the BMW and Merc are sold with the 'cleaning kit'. I guess that confirms mine as being 'non compliant' .

Wont lose too much sleep over it though :D

how much u paying?

I was supposed to be getting them for free, but now I dont know.

If they are going to charge me I wont bother based on bulb replacement costs, fogging up issues and also ADR / legal issues... I am happy with my headlights and xenons dont represent a worthwhile MOD imo...

UPDATE: I have just been offered the xenons for a straight swap-over...is it worth it? [i know they look good ;p] But are there any Significant risks? Anyone been in trouble with the authorities or just a rumour? [police, vic roads, epa?]

ylwgtr: can you get the xenon bulbs cheaper than $330? Do you know how long they last for? And lastly, how much is a levelling / cleaning kit?

I am familiar with xenon lamps used in "data / video projector technology" and most last for at least 10,000 hours these days, but i dont know about the "automotive based" lamps?

For $330 they had better last a couple of years!

Btw, to change / remove the headlight assembly you need to remove your front bar as there is ONE bolt underneath the bar [at each side] that needs to be unbolted to remove the light = pain in the butt! My car is sitting at home with no front end / headlights, it looks naked :D

Btw part 2: I have never heard of a factory headlight bulb that needed to be replaced by removal of the headlamp unit [corrrect if wrong]. Being a "consumable" headlight / parker / indicator / brake bulbs are usually pretty easy to replace on ALL cars...[this does not apply to dashlights of course]. Parker stalk just needs to be rotated a 1/4 turn and it will just pull straight out! unless its rusted in of course...i think they were anti-clockwise...

/end thesis

thanks for the info ylwgtr!

    • I dunno about that as a blanket statement. Pitwork is Nissan's "Nissan genuine" thing, and for stuff like timing belts, I have found them to be excellent. Of course, for things like oil filters, you always use proper trusted brands anyway, not whatever the OEM has taken to using.
    • Ahhhh... If you were putting 12V to the led in there, that's likely made it very unhappy. Chances are how you put power, was 12V across an LED that's meant to only have about 20mA through it at peak, and a forward voltage of about 1.8 to 2.4 volts. That circuit is likely only a 3V3 circuit, and will have a resistor in series with the led too. That's my guesstimate on that light, without having touched one.
    • Another vote for installing them and see how you go.  I mean, you already own them, why would you not fit them?
    • I have had too many of those over the years, my cars have a toolkit or at minimum a cheapy multi tool thing because its too easy to be snookered by some stupid plastic clip that stops you checking the battery terminal isn't loose.
    • Basically, if there is a part# on the nissan catalogue, it is a genuine part. There is a thing called "new old stock" which is stuff made years ago but never sold (or landfilled), but it is super hit and miss what you can buy. Other than some expensive Nismo stuff there is nothing new being made that suits these cars. The only time to be a little careful is (mostly in the US I think, but maybe Japan too), Nissan started rebranding some cheap crap maintenance parts like oil filters as "Pitworks"; stay away from them, if you are buying cheap just buy whatever the local car parts shop carries The three part numbers have an explanation on Amayama: 0V005 is auto, base style 0V015 is manual 0V505 is auto, hectic momo branded ones, maximum F&F points there!
