Hey guys,

Anyone had issues with theitr fuel gauge not working?

Today - Filled up before a dirt track day - I have done around 140kms since filling up and my fuel gauge has not moved from full.

Any tips / tricks to make it work so I dont run out of fuel? :P

Cheers,

Chris

check your level sender in the fuel tank mate. its common for them to fall off their hooks in the 33's.

my car used to show a full tank till i got a half tank then it dropped almost instantly.

just open the fuel tank, re-mount it and it should be right.

Thanks for the tips Joe and Vic!

:)

level sender - when you say open the tank - as in where you put the fuel in - that part?

sorry if it sounds like a silly question!!

hmm...I filled up today already :( so ill wait and see what it does and check out next weekend

thanks guys!

and Vic - which one is the fuse for it???

oI had this too and it wa the level sender had fallen off.

To answer your question, No. You have to open the tank from the boot. There is an 6-8" hole in the tank in the boot behind the partition, under a metal plate that is screwed down by 4 screws. There is a big cap screwed onto it that has 2 plugs and 3 hoses. You need to remove all the plugs and hoses and open it with a hunk of wood and a rubber mallet. Check out in the DIY section adn look for fuel pump install for instructions on how to open the tank. DON'T FORGET to disconect the battery and remove before doing this...big badda boom.

no worries mate.

im talking about the access through the boot. there is a panel with 4 bolts holding it in, next to your battery in the boot.

i recommend you wait till your tank is almost empty before you do this.

1. take the panel off

2. disconnect the looms (leave the hoses running from the lid because fuel will rush out of it. watch out you dont damage any when loosening the cap).

3. get a plank of wood or a long screw driver and hammer then hold it onto the little little fin things on the cap, then hammer it around to loosen (let me know if this needs to be explained a bit better). watch out for the rubber seal around the lid.

4. detach the fuel lines and remember where each one goes. the reason i left the hoses for this stage is when the fuel starts rushing out you'll be able to let it flow back into the fuel tank.

5. grab the level sender and mount the sucker back on.

6. when putting the lid back on, i recommend using a bit of WD40 to get the lid and the rubber seal sitting snug inside where the cap goes on. you'll know what i mean when you see it.

7. put the rest on in the reverse order and it should be right

here are pics of what it looks like in the r33's and where it should be inside the tank once mounted:

I think the pump is at the back somewhere? not exactly sure

Here is a guide on installing a new fuel pump, might help in opening the fuel tank: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...showtopic=85375

While your at it just upgrade the stock fuel pump

YOU GUYS RULE!!!!

Guys - thanks heaps for the replies!!!!!

Ill get around to it over next weekend when the fuel levels gone down!

Once again - cheers and I'll have to give you guys virtual beers for your help

Cheers,

Chris

    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
