i used dextron III.

be careful when filling it up. i used around 3-3.5L when filling mine back up.

when reading the dipstick it has a COLD and a HOT section, after putting in around 3L, turn the car on then check it. make sure you're checking it when its cold when looking at the COLD section and hot in the HOT section.

it doesnt take long for it to heat up when idling.

Just by draining the pan you've only drained out less than *half* of the total capacity because the rest of the dirty oil is in the torque convertor/galleries. You need to do several succesive changes to do a complete flush, and this is the same with 95% of auto trannies out there. I'd just do 3 changes over 3 weekends to make life easiest.

BTW I bought Castrol Transmax Z... bloody rip off but I want the best oils.

Check your manuals, because most of the electronic JATCO trannies requires Nissan Matic D (high quality synthetic tranny fluid), if you go putting standard mineral Dex 3 etc in your going to do damage for sure. They are very hard on their tranny fluid and its why, even most oil manufacturers say go to Nissan for these vehicles.

Also pull the line off the cooler and allow it to pump all the fluid out of the torque convertor if you want to change all the fluid, not just whats in the pan. Close to 4L without torque convertor or around 9 if you do the full flush from memory.

Check your manuals for all the specifics.

Theres nothing to clarify really. You need to drain and refil it 3 times, with at least 5 km worth of driving in between changes to make sure the new fluid mixes with the old. You'll notice say for example, 3L comes out of the pan but the manual says the tranny holds 8L. Its same with almost all trannies out there, old or new. So.. that 4L you bought is definitely not enough unfortunately. You need another 2 bottles to do it correctly.

Btw Matic D is very close to Dexron III (Transmax Z is rated Dexron III). I have had no problems using Dexron III products in Nissans and some factory manuals also suggest Dexron III if Matic D is not available. Also my ignorance suggests that Matic D is not synthetic (as if Nissan would go synthetic for anything from factory!) Also pulling the tranny lines won't do the convertor. It'll only drain whats in the pan, even less so because there will be some left underneath the oil pickup.

Castrol say you can use it but specifically cover there ass by put a note alongside the recommendation saying

"Manufacturer recommends "Nissan Matic D" fluid, available from Nissan Dealer"

Im rather sure matic d is fully synthetic, just look at the price and not many manufactuers of oils, castrol, valvoline etc recommend an alternative they always quote Matic D from Nissan to be used.

Anyway, your cars, just trying to give some heads up ;)

You can start the vehicle and disconnect the cooler lines and run the engine to pump the old fluid out of the convertor just add new fluid as the old crap is pumping out.

If in doubt leave it to the pros or just do 3 changes like said above, but 3 changes with synthetic fluid is not cheap.

Yea. Just had a 100% ATF Flush on my X-Trail. My mech used Dexron III. My mechanic uses some machine to flush it thoroughly. He was telling me that you lose like only 40% of the dirty fluid by doing it manually. I can't remember clearly what my mech told me, but a full flush would require 8-10 litres replacement of ATF.

I would do this for my skyline as well.

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go       
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
