I am looking at buying an early 300ZX VG30t (2 cam engine) for our class 5 offroad car and am seeking info. Has anybody used one of these engines with reliability and success? What manual g/box and b/housing do they use? Where can I buy a Navara front entry inlet man.? Has anybody got a std computer and eng. loom? How much boost will std engine take with correct tune? Anybody built replacement turbo exhaust manifolds?

Check out http://z31.com/

These cars are fairly heavy and stock have the same output as VLT (150kW at the flywheel). Be warned that they are renowned for spontaneously bursting into flames.....heat buid-up in the 'V' of the engine causes fuel leaks and, well, instant BBQ. Nissan did a recall in the US to fix the problem, but never admitted to anything in Oz even tho many owners have experienced 'the problem'.

Gearbox in the stock Z31T is more-or-less the same as RB20DET type, but fortunately the gearbox in RWD Navara is as strong as the RB25DET type and will bolt up.

An option for upgrade is VG30DET from Cima....190kW stock, but might not be allowed for your class.

Suspension setup is largely the same as Datto 1600 and 280ZX (+ R30 Skyline, etc)....semi-trailing arms at the rear plus mac struts up front.

I havnt been envolved in Off Road racing for a couple of years but if you want to enter class 5 in a full body car and you are changing the engine, use a lexus 4ltr v8 :D

Reliability of these engines regardles of abuse is amazing.

As far as im aware the origional body shape must remain but everything else as long as they remain rwd can be changed.

I used to follow this car around being attatched somewhat to the family.

We bought a 120y 2 door that was built for class 5, years ago. It has a recessed fire wall. It has a 180b diff assembly in it. We are going to get it going with a hotty L18 and 5 speed but I am liking the idea of a VG30t.

Anybody know of any vg30t powered buggies or offroad cars?

I have never seen nor heard of one being used.

You would probably be the first.

But the weight of this engine in a 120Y would be bad for pretty much all soft tracks and i wouldnt think it would do you any favours.

It would be definately more suited to another car/buggy

Slide, Are you able to give any tips on budget building some long travel (8"- 12") Macpherson strut front suspension. The car has Bluebird struts in it at the moment. Or do we need to fit some a-arm / vw front sus.? Can you provide any tips/ measurments of lenghts, angles, shock mount position when building a-arm? With the 180b rear what sort of angle can you run on the shafts? With the car sitting still what sort of cambers do we want? Cheers, Jason.

I dont really have any technical knowledge of your particular class but if you are going to be envolved with SORRA (Sydney Off Road Racing Association) then post up in the forums or get out to an event but places like Gondawindi and such require some good suspension setups to cope with the likes of this sort of air time.

Even with these i have seen strut towers come clean out of the bonnet so go nuts with the support welding. :O

If you currently attend a few events just go and speak with some Class 5 people.

There used to be two guys from Dondinalong i think with 2 Datsuns but im sure both of them have been retired now for the tube Buggy setup.

Because you dont want this to happen.

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
