I got an eye-full of the sedan version of a 1997 Galant VR4 on J-Spec and I must admit, I reckon it's a cool looking car, seems practical-ish too with the whole 4 doors thing. My question, does anyone here have one or know someone that has one. Are they a decent car? I read they make over 200kw's stock and are 4WD but what's the weight like? Do they mod up OK are they hard to get parts for, do they use the evo engine etc etc etc. I currently have a 96 Series II 33 (as Seen in my avatar ) so would be comparing to that.

I don't have one, but have driven the wagon version called the 'Legnum VR-4'. It was an auto so didn't really get a feel for it as what I could've with a manual, but for what it is it's (the Galant) a great alternative to a Toyota Mark II or R33 sedan. Being front wheel drive based 4WD you do get that typical feel of understeer, but straight line performance is on par with the others mentioned, and on paper really should go as well as an Evo 5/6 but I don't think so.

As for the Galant you can't really argue with those looks, it's very well proportioned. But it fails miserably for aftermarket support compared to Skylines, theres only a handful of companies in Japan that really support the Galant/Legnum and even then they aren't exactly cheap. Try finding stuff for Mitsu GTO's and adapt... Yahoo will come to the rescue somewhat too. Other thing is the engine is a trasverse mounted twin turbo so with the limited room and piping everywhere you might find it hard to find someone who enjoys working on them.

I think they would great daily and a very reliable car but i reckon they would be hard to source parts from wreckers in Australia if parts needed to be replaced.

Untill people start importing these VR4s and driving them around and people are after parts out of it i dont think wreckers will be importing VR4 parts in a rush till there is market for them

i think they are nuts, a real sleeper! in stock trim the 2.4L twinturbo v6 runs a 14.0 second 1/4 mile

well the r33 is quoted as pretty much that as well..

The Galant, is a larger engine to the EVO ones, which you'd think would translate into more power. I guess a lack of parts doesn't help.

The later model engines (6G75) were similar to the same one seen in the mitsu 380.

    • With ordering the belt, you're doing water pump and the idler and tensioner at the same time too yes?
    • This is just a dumb way of keeping the wastegate closed to make more boost. Undo it and either follow the factory setup or redo it properly. Manual boost controllers just use a spring preload to determine when to close in response to boost pressure so it no longer vents to atmosphere.
    • So for the wide band is a Bosch 4.9 correct for the Link G4+ along with a Can bus? Just get the Link gear or is generic ok too? Eg here: LINK LINK DIGITAL WIDEBAND CAN MODULE WITH BOSCH 4.9 SENSOR : KYP Performance House  
    • Bit difficult to follow. Have a look below and see what the standard R32 layout was like. Note there was a restrictor in place immediately before "turbocharged pressure control solenoid" that, if removed, magically got you 1 bar boost.
    • I might be way off the mark here.. there must be a T junction under the manifold. That takes manifold pressure through a check valve prior to the T, one side splits out to this bleed off orifice, the other straight to the wastegate actuators.
